Yo (Spanish: "I"/"Me") is the upcoming sixth studio album by Romanian singer Inna. It is to be released in May 2019 by Roc Nation.[5]

Background and release

Working on Yo commenced in 2016,[6] and around 50 songs were composed to select from for the final tracklist.[7] After having conducted her first official tour in Canada and the United States through September and October 2018,[8] Inna uploaded a video on her YouTube channel on 16 October—her birthday—titled "Yo". In the short film, she teased the album by briefly elaborating on its creation.[9][10][11] In an eventual interview, Inna revealed the release of the album for late 2018, saying that she was "listening a lot to the album because we're changing, dropping verses, adjusting".[12] On another occasion Roc Nation, which at the time Inna had recently signed a record deal with, was confirmed as the label conducting the release in 2019.[6][13]

Creation and composition

During an interview, Inna revealed that she wanted Yo to be completely in Spanish due to the "Spanish vibe" that she had gotten during concerts in Latin America.[12][14] She remembers "I was in the studio, with a cerveza, listening to some instrumentals [...], I started with some lines and then, it turned out really easy to write the lyrics in Spanish".[15] For the first time, the singer took entire creative control over an album—thus its title—and contributed significantly to the writing.[12][14] She elaborated on the songwriting process: "[...] we write in gibberish, it could be any language. The base of the song is la-la-las or words with no meaning. Then we find the right words later."[16]

She described the songs featured on Yo as experimental and heavily influenced by gypsy music, a different style from her previous releases. She also explores several singing styles, partially also present in Romanian folklore.[12] During the lyrics, Inna "speak[s] very much about love and about many female characters seen from different perspectives, through several pairs of eyes".[12] Every song "tells the story of another character, another experience that Inna thinks she has lived in another life".[14] For Yo, Inna extensively collaborated with Romanian producer David Ciente, who added organic sounds to the songs' instrumentation; according to Inna, he "has made [music] out of everything from wood, metal, traffic sounds [and] a beat on the microphone".[12]

Promotion and singles

A music video was filmed for every song on Yo, displaying their "mood and story", although not forming an overall plot.[12][15] They were directed by Bogdan Pǎun, while production was handled by Loops Production and Alexandru Mureșan was hired as the director of photography.[14] The album tracks "Iguana", "La Vida", "Locura" and "Sí, Mamá" were released as promotional singles in Romania in July 2018; for a Coca-Cola campaign, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar bottles were designed with QR codes that—when scanned with a smartphone—linked to Shazam, allowing users to stream the songs.[17]

"Ra" was released as the album's lead single on 27 September 2018 by Global Records in Romania.[18] Roc Nation issued the single internationally on 2 November 2018.[19] Under similar procedures, the labels also released the follow-ups "Iguana", "Sin Ti" and "Tu Manera" in November 2018, January 2019 and March 2019, respectively.[A][4][20] Inna's previous two releases, "Me Gusta" and "No Help" (2018), were left out from Yo's tracklist as they "were not in the vibe that the whole album has, I felt I would release a material that sounded in a certain way."[15]
