You is an American television psychological thriller series based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes that premiered on Lifetime on September 9, 2018.[3][4] On July 26, 2018, ahead of the series premiere Lifetime announced that You had been renewed for a second season.[5][6]

Premise

You follows Joe Goldberg, a bookstore manager who falls in love with a customer named Beck and quickly becomes obsessed with her.[7]

Bookstore manager Joe Goldberg has a meet cute with aspiring writer Guinevere Beck, and an internet search about her leads to Joe following Beck around, monitoring her social interactions and even getting into her apartment while she is out. Joe is nearby when a drunken Beck falls onto the subway tracks, and he saves her. She later stops by the bookstore to thank him, and he asks her out. Joe lures Beck's philandering boyfriend Benji to the basement of his shop, hits him in the head with a sledgehammer, and locks him in a plexiglass book vault.

Production

In February 2015, it was announced that Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble will develop a series based on the Caroline Kepnes novel of the same name titled You: A Novel. Berlanti and Gample are writing the script, with Berlanti attached to direct the potential pilot.[17] Two years later, it was announced that the series was purchased by Lifetime and put on fast-track development.[3]

In April 2017, Lifetime gave You a 10-episode straight-to-series order.[18] On July 26, 2018, ahead of the series premiere Lifetime announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.[5][6]

Casting

On September 14, 2017, it was announced that Hari Nef had been cast in a recurring role as Blythe, a talented and competitive peer in Beck's MFA program,[19] followed a few days later by Daniel Cosgrove for a recurring role playing Ron, a parole officer.[20]

On October 30, 2017, it was announced that Michael Maize and Ambyr Childers signed onto the series in the recurring roles of Officer Nico and Candace, respectively.[21]

Filming

Season one of You was filmed in New York City, New York,[1] and wrapped on December 19, 2017.[22]

Release

Broadcast

You premiered on Lifetime in the United States on September 9, 2018.[4] In May 2018, it was announced that Netflix acquired the exclusive international broadcast rights to You, making it available as an original series on the platform less than a day after their original U.S. broadcast.[23][24]

Marketing

On April 10, 2018, the official trailer was released.[7]

Reception

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 86% based on 22 reviews, with an average rating of 7.36/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "You pairs thrilling drama with trashy fun to create an addictive social media horror story that works its way under the skin -- and stays there."[25] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 74 out of 100 based on 14 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[26]
