User talk:ANB
Hi ANB - was hoping to get in touch to try and source a higher resolution image of Constanceandeva.jpg - I would like to use it to promote a talk on Eva Gore-Booth in the National Library of Ireland in June. Would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me regarding the file - I do not know how to contact you directly, and am a very inexperienced Wikipedia user. Email address is rabjet@yahoo.com. many thanks, rabjet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rabjet (talk • contribs) 15:58, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
File source problem with File:Frankflood.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Frankflood.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 05:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 05:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hello again. I'd like to get this matter resolved. A little concerned that other images may also be vulnerable to the same issue. We may need to get some expert advice on copyright, what do you think? Best. RashersTierney (talk) 08:12, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- That is worrying. It's been up for a good while now with no problems. I also think it's sufficiently old to be out of copyright. I'll try and search out the website I got it from. Do you know where we might look for advice? There are a lot of pictures up on WP from the 1916-23 period justified with the same out of copyright tag I put on this. ANB (talk) 12:12, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- I expect these images were included in Tim Carey's book, so their original provenance should be easily determined if you have access to it. If you don't, just say and I'll try to get it as inter-library loan. (The originals were probably from contemporary mass cards) RashersTierney (talk) 00:41, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- I own a copy, but it's at home in Ireland. I'll see if I can get a family member to dig it out and check when I ring home next (probably tonight). Unfortunately, much googling failed to turn up the website where I got the photo originally. I looks like it's been taken down since. The photo was featured on the TG4 documentary on the Forgotten Ten (recently been uploaded to youtube) - considering how indebted that production is to Carey's research, I suspect you may be spot on about that book being the source. Will let you know! ANB (talk) 12:01, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- The Flood portrait is partly reproduced on p12 of 'Honouring The Mountjoy Martyrs (The Forgotten Ten)' by the National Graves Association, 2001. Unfortunately, there is no mention of anything relating to copyright of any images they have used. Evidently, the NGA are confident that there is no outstanding issue of copyvio. The WP P. Doyle image was certainly used on his Mass card, as is clear from p14 of the same booklet. RashersTierney (talk) 16:27, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- It'd be ok with a source, to show that it was first published prior to 1939. BigDunc 19:52, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

- If anyone has access to Irish Times archive, it might be worth a look. I'm afraid mine has 'expired'. Should be enough to show it as having been published before '39. RashersTierney (talk) 20:14, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'd be surprised if it's in IT archive (to which I dearly wish I had access). I did a research project a while back on press reaction to Kevin Barry's death and trawled through news reports about him and, for comparison, the other executed volunteers. There was a distinct dearth of pictures in my recollection. I've asked my sister to dig out my Tim Carey book and check there. Hopefully we can find something to keep the bots happy. Tried the National Library today for Carey's book. They have never had a copy, which ironically caused a little kefuffle re. copyright entitlements (the publishers can expect a snooty letter pretty soon). While there I also searched the on-line IT archives, to no avail. You were right re. dearth of historic images. You had any better luck? RashersTierney (talk) 18:05, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Impressive research work all round. I think we can eliminate Carey's book from enquiries. A member of my (long-suffering) family very kindly searched out the copy I have in Dublin and went through it with a fine tooth comb. None of the images of Flood correspond to this one. Those that there are have been reproduced by permission of Kilmainham Gaol Museum, so it's possible this photo may also be in their collection, but I've no way to be sure. A while ago I was in contact with a seller on ebay who had a repro of an image of Kevin Barry that I had never seen before (formal portrait, three quarter view). He said he took it from a postcard that was sold in Ireland in the the 20s and that it was common for such images to be distributed in that format at the time. This image looks like a likely candidate for such dissemination. Still, that doesn't get us much futher. It would be a pity to lose this, all the other images I've seen are of much poorer quality.ANB (talk) 23:17, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
- While searching for a contact for the museum at Mountjoy, I came across this little gem. You'll need to scroll down to find the piece I mean. I know the museum is worked only by a handful of volunteers, but I'll see if they can help re the photo. Also left message with Niall Bergin at Kilmainham. We'll see. 'Fraid thats me out of ideas. RashersTierney (talk) 07:52, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
- Appears this portrait was taken by Keogh Brothers Ltd., which may make the c'right issue more rather than less intractable. Salavat has delayed the deletion process to give us a chance to sort this out. RashersTierney (talk) 10:35, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, you've done some amazing work - I'm afraid I wouldn't even know where to begin digging into this whole area and am horribly hampered by geography. Thanks also for getting in contact with Salavat. Seems from the link that the National Library are the c/right owners the versions of this photo in the Keogh Collection there, though I can't see one that has been signed and tinted like our one (which may not affect things anyway). Do you think we could possibly use one the of National Library versions (they are of excellent quality, though I think the second one may be a different Frank Flood) and justify it according to the rationale given for this image of a similar date and origin? The Prison Education service page is a fascinating find, I hadn't seen it before. ANB (talk) 15:37, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

- I don't see a prob. with using one of them under 'fair use' if it comes to it. (Almost feel we need to consult with senior council ;-). Still hoping to hear from Seán Reynolds at Mountjoy or Niall Bergin at Kilmainham with (hopefully) confirmation that copies of our image were in the public domain prior to '39. Source of pictures
[edit]Hi ANB. The Wild Geese site has the pictures of Maher and Foley. This may have been where you located them originally? Hope this helps. RashersTierney (talk) 15:46, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello.
Thank you for creating the article on Charles Muscatine. This marvelous man was my teacher, my advisor, my mentor, and my friend while I was a student at Berkeley. I remember him with a great deal of affection and respect. -- Michael David (talk) 16:52, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you! You're very lucky to have been taught be him and sincere condolences on his death. He seems to have been a wonderful person on every level. I never met him, but his book on Chaucer and the French Tradition was instrumental in getting me hooked on medieval studies as an undergrad. ANB (talk) 18:43, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!
[edit]Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I've just read your profile and I understood that you're an Irishman (I wish I can visit your wonderful country some time soon!), so you understand what are a minorized language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages and cultures in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! Keep on preserving your great culture, country, music and language! Slán agat! Capsot (User talk:Capsottalk) 07:09, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Please stop editing 'Golden Team'
[edit]Although your contributions are appreciated, your efforts to make my article adhere to a more concise language has nearly ruined my article that has taken my years to write. You have removed approximately 40% of facts and data after your edits and have altered the nature and style of my work. I am the main author of this article and am asking you to please stop editing this article immediately. I'll incorporate some of your style into the eventual rollback. Thank you for your attention. OliverTwist88 (OliverTwist88talk) July 09 2010
- I hadn't intended to 'ruin' it and wikipedia is a collaborative process. Numerous editors had suggested a complete rewrite of the article was necessary and the article itself has been tagged to this effect. I was careful to delete only information that I considered repetitive and avoid deleting factual material, though I realise this may seem like a subjective judgement. In any case, I'm sorry to have upset you in any way and I realise you obviously put a lot of work into this. It would be nice to see the article developed further though, as I said on the talk page, there's a lot of good stuff there. Thanks. ANB (talk) 21:41, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
'Golden Team'
[edit]This article was in part written in a style that is not at all overwhelming. It was my intention to infuse it with a sort of linquistic prowess that other articles lack. Your due efforts are 'simplfying' or 'toning down' the verbage has caused considerable loss of data in the text, approximately 40% of what you edited resulted in deletion. Although, you mean well and wanted to tighten up the language to be it more consice, you subjectively removed around 40% of my work that I started in December of 2005. Wholesale "reformation" doesn't serve this article well, it's meant to be written in a sophisticated factual way that I have put numerous years into. I have had discussions with editors via chat to gain suggestions about what is needed in the article, and citations are the most needed, not a general revamping of the literature itself. Thank you for your high interest in seeing the article receives eventual class-B or class-A recognition and your help is appreciated. But as the principal author, this sort of 'pruning' and sublimation has taken the gist and core of what I am trying to convey. In all due respect, your suggestions are welcome, but please do not 'edit' this article with such broad sweeping strokes. Sincerely and thank you. I'm writing of the 1954 WC final
[edit]Hey ANB, I've reverted back a lot of what you subjectively edited but kept some of your ideas and thoughts in the revision. I'm starting to write about the 1954 World Cup Final for the 'Golden Team' article that has taken me 4 1/2 years to incrementally write. As you'll see the "Miracle of Berne" is written in not a condensed style as the above chapters keeping your more simplified style in mind. I've made sure to check all the facts before I include them, and a quick question for you. Is this style better than the style I've written the majority of my work? —Preceding unsigned comment added by OliverTwist88 (talk • contribs) 18:41, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Iollan/Uilliam Mac an Leagha
[edit]Hmmm, interesting point. There just does not seem to be much literature on the Mac an Leagha's, never mind who Iollan or William was. And I cannot think of any such rebuttal offhand. So, sorry, but keep looking! We need more in any article on Medieval Ireland! Fergananim (talk) 07:30, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks is much appreciated! See if you can try and publish some of the articles in some of the smaller journals like The Septs, Journal of the Irish Genealogical Research Society or some such from the perspective of Mac an Leagha family history article. They don't generally get too many people writing about Irish family history back that far, and would very much appreciate new writers. Check out the following

- Ugh. There are indeed. Thanks for letting me know! When I get a moment, I'll go through them properly and see if things can be made more accurate. On reflection, it might be better to give the full book reference (page numbers etc.) in each instance, rather than the google book url. I've recently discovered that google books don't necessarily make the same pages viewable in different countries. I'll see if I can dig out the library copy. ANB (talk) 15:32, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Better source request for File:Tomasmacurtain.jpg
[edit]Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:
You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 03:10, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The file File:Macswiney.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
unused, low-res, no obvious use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
