On 23 December 2022, three people were killed and four others were injured during a mass shooting in rue d'Enghien in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, France.[1]

The trail of the right-wing racist attack is favored by investigators[2] after the perpetrator of the attack declared himself motivated by racism.[3]

Shooting

The shooting occurred in a Kurdish cultural center, a restaurant and a hairdresser in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.[4] An eyewitness stated that the accused shooter enter the cultural center first, then the restaurant, and the hairdresser before he was stopped by two passersby. Another described the shooter as silent and calm while using a small-caliber pistol.[5]

Victims

Three people were killed in the shooting, with three others wounded; one in critical condition and two others in less serious conditions. The shooter was also wounded in the face, before his arrest.[5]

Accused

The alleged perpetrator, William M,[6] a 69-year-old Frenchman, was born in 1953 in Montreuil.[7] A former SNCF employee, he had previously been arrested in 2021 for attacking migrants in tents with a sword,[8] and was under investigation for "racist violence with weapons".[9]

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin declared that the suspect was not the subject of a file linked to the "ultra-right" and that he "was not known to the intelligence services, nor to the DGSI".[10] He added that he was "obviously looking to prey on strangers" and that he "acted alone".[11]

Aftermath

After the attack additional police forces had been ordered to protect Kurdish sites and Turkish diplomatic institutions, by Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, who also asked the French president and prime minister to allow the Kurdish people to demonstrate. During a visit to the scene of the shooting by French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on 23 December, police clashed with protestors that had gathered, with tear gas fired at the protestors who were mostly from the Kurdish diaspora.[12]
