[edit] History
In 1985, Fort Hunt High School was designated as Carl Sandburg Middle School after the Fairfax County School Board voted to close Fort Hunt High School, Groveton High School, Foster and Bryant Intermediates Schools. The high schools were consolidated at the Groveton campus, which was renamed West Potomac High School. The intermediate school students were sent to the new Sandburg. Carl Sandburg is the only feeder school for West Potomac. It has a rivalry with Walt Whitman Middle school,[citation needed] which is the only feeder for West Potomac's rival, Mount Vernon.

[edit] Performing arts
Each year, Carl Sandburg's students host a play or a musical, alternating each year. This acts like a fundraiser for the school with ticket and candy sales. Ms. Malone is the theater head, with Ms. Walker, a volunteer, in charge of costumes and the costume crew. The 07-08, 08-09 and 09-10 have been Alice in Wonderland(musical) in 2008, The Wizard of Oz(play)in 2009, and Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella(musical) in 2010 respectively. The lead females have been seventh grade girls all three years. Aside from the actors, there are numerous Tech crews who work the scenes. These include the light crew, set crew, sound crew, costume, hair, and makeup crew, publicity crew, and cleanup crew.
