Newman University College is a university college offering academic degrees and teacher training in Birmingham, England.
Known as Newman College of Higher Education until January 2008, it has the highest employment of graduates rate of UK universities and is in the top 25% of UK universities for teaching quality, academic support, personal development and assessment and feedback in the 2007 National Student Survey.[citation needed] In September 2007, it was given the right to award its own degrees by the Privy Council, giving it the formal status of a University College.[2] It changed its name in January 2008 to reflect this change of status[3].

Newman was founded in 1968 on a campus in the suburb of Bartley Green. It is a Roman Catholic institution, although it is open to students regardless of their religious beliefs, and is named in honour of the Catholic intellectual John Henry Newman, who had strong links with the city of Birmingham.

The college currently awards degrees from the University of Leicester, though in September 2007 it was given the right to award its own degrees.[3]
The University College offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Initial Teacher Training (ITT) is available at both undergraduate level and through the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at postgraduate level. Newman also offers a wide range of undergraduate single and combined honours courses, as well as taught and research-based postgraduate degrees and a range of Foundation Degrees.

Newman Student Union also provides a wealth of support for representation and welfare, entertainments, sports teams and societies as well as managing the Student Council.
