[edit] History
Newman was founded in 1968 on a campus in the suburb of Bartley Green. It is a Catholic institution, although it is open to students regardless of their religious beliefs, and is named in honour of the Catholic intellectual John Henry Newman, who had strong links with the city of Birmingham, through being an Oratorian and a member of the Birmingham Oratory.

[edit] Newman Students' Union
Newman Students' Union (NSU hereafter) is a charitable organisation that exists to represent its members, the students of Newman University College. NSU offers representation for students undertaking academic degrees and teacher training in Birmingham, England. Representation is available on every level, from individual representation where students need to meet with a member of staff face to face, through to Newman's Committees, to the National Union of Students and to Government. NSU's task is to ensure that students' rights and needs are considered when changes are planned to the education system, be it within Newman or on a national level.
NSU has other activities in which students can become involved: supporting student groups such as sports teams and societies, various committees, the Executive Committee, student course representatives, supporting the on-site bar and organising social events. NSU also runs the Student Information and Advice Centre (SIAC) which is staffed by volunteer students who act as a signpost to help others with a variety of concerns.
[edit] Student Union Executive
The constitution of Newman Student Union requires that it be run by democratically elected officers who serve a one year term beginning on July 1. NSU also offers officers specific training to ensure they gain extra-curricular skills and experience through their time at Newman in order to better prepare for the work-place.
