- Indo-Pakistani War of 1965: Pakistan launches Operation Grand Slam, with the objective of capturing the vital town of Akhnoor in Jammu, so as to sever communications and cut off supply routes to Indian troops. Pakistani leader Ayub Khan states that "Hindu morale will not stand more than a couple of hard blows at the right time and place"[1] India responds by calling in its air force.

September 2, 1965 (Thursday)
- Pakistani troops enter the Indian sector of Kashmir, while Indian troops try to invade Lahore.

- Pope Paul VI issues the encyclical Mysterium fidei, reinforcing traditional Roman Catholic doctrine concerning the Eucharist.

- The Gillette Cup limited-over cricket tournament, is won by Yorkshire. Geoff Boycott's 146 runs in the final at Lord's, remains the highest ever scored in a Lord's county limited-overs final.[3]

- Died: Albert Schweitzer, 90, Alsatian physician and missionary, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize

- Pakistan celebrates Air Force Day on account of heavy retaliations to India.
- The People's Republic of China announces that it will reinforce its troops on the Indian border.
- Vietnam War: In a follow-up to August's Operation Starlite, United States Marines and South Vietnamese forces initiate Operation Piranha on the Batangan Peninsula, 23 miles (37 km) south of the Chu Lai Marine base.

- India opens 2 additional fronts against Pakistan.
- The Pakistan Navy raids Indian coasts without any resistance in Operation Dwarka (Pakistan celebrates Victory Day annually).
- Died: Dorothy Dandridge, 42, US actress and singer (cause of death uncertain);[5] Hermann Staudinger, 84, German chemist and Nobel Prize laureate
September 9, 1965 (Thursday)
- U.N. Secretary General U Thant negotiates with Pakistan President Ayub Khan.
- U Thant recommends China for United Nations membership.
- Hurricane Betsy roars ashore near New Orleans, Louisiana, US, with winds of 145 mph (233 km/h), causing 76 deaths and $1.42 billion in damage. The storm is the first hurricane to cause $1 billion in unadjusted damages, giving it the nickname "Billion Dollar Betsy". It is the last major hurricane to strike New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina 40 years later.
- UK dredger Bowqueen capsizes and sinks off Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, with the loss of four of her seven crew.[6]
- Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitches a perfect game in a baseball match against the Chicago Cubs. The opposing pitcher, Bob Hendley, allows only 1 run, which is unearned. It is Koufax's fourth no-hitter in as many seasons.

- Indo-Pakistani War: The Indian Army captures the town of Burki, just southeast of Lahore.
- Vietnam War: The 1st Cavalry Division of the United States Army arrives in Vietnam.
- Born: Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, in Damascus, the son of Hafez al-Assad; Moby, US musician (as Richard Melville Hall) in Harlem, New York City

September 17, 1965 (Friday)
- King Constantine II of Greece forms a new government with Prime Minister Stephanos Stephanopoulos, in an attempt to end a 2-year-old political crisis.
- Pan Am Flight 292 crash: A Boeing 707-120B flies into Chances Peak on the island of Montserrat while on a flight from Fort-de-France - Le Lamentin Airport in Martinique to Coolidge International Airport in Antigua and Barbuda. The aircraft is destroyed, with no survivors among the 30 passengers and crew on board.[11]
September 18, 1965 (Saturday)
- In Denmark, small-time criminal Palle Sørensen shoots dead four policemen who are pursuing him; he is apprehended the next day. Danish law changes as a result of the incident.[12]
- Comet Ikeya-Seki is first sighted by Japanese astronomers.
- Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin invites the leaders of India and Pakistan to meet in the Soviet Union to negotiate.
- John McKellar's comedy revue A Cup of Tea, a Bex and a Good Lie Down opens at the Phillip Street Theatre, Sydney, Australia.[13]

- Radio Peking announces that Indian troops have dismantled their equipment on the Chinese side of the border.
- British cargo ship Tactician, laden with explosives, catches fire off Canvey Island, Essex. The ship is flooded during firefighting operations.[15]

- Indo-Pakistani War of 1965: Hostilities cease following intervention by the United Nations; the ceasefire takes effect at 3am.[16]

- USSR cruise ship Nadezhda Krupskaya runs aground off Stockholm, Sweden. All 94 passengers are returned to Stockholm by a Swedish ship.[19]

- The world's largest tanker ship at the time, Tokyo Maru, is launched in Yokohama, Japan.

- Fidel Castro announces that anyone who wants to can emigrate to the United States.
- Taal Volcano in Luzon, Philippines, erupts, killing hundreds.
- British ship Sir Joseph Rawlinson sinks after a collision with a hopper barge. Ten crew members are rescued by the tug Danube VIII, but nine others die.[21] The ship was raised in the following year.[22]
- Aviator James Fitzmaurice is given a state funeral in Dublin.[23]
