The Nostalgia Chick is a series and character created by Lindsay Ellis for the comedy website That Guy with the Glasses.
Concept[edit]
The idea of a "Nostalgia Chick" to complement the existing "Nostalgia Critic" (Douglas Walker) was announced on the That Guy with the Glasses website in "The Search for the Nostalgia Chick" (August 10, 2008). The idea was for female host to review female-targetted nostalgic films and television.[1]
The competition was won by Lindsay Ellis, then using the name "The Dudette," as announced on the site in "Nostalgia Chick Winner!" (September 15, 2008).[1] During the competition, Ellis actually beleived that the winner would be Krissy Diggs, who was eventually one of two runners up and joined the site as "That Chick with the Goggles."[1]
The costume of the Nostalgia Chick initially included a pair of glasses and a bow tie worn as a choker. Ellis wore the glasses to disguise the tired appearance of her eyes in her submission. They were never real and their appearances diminished due to losing them. The glasses were eventually stolen from Ellis' car in Brooklyn and no longer appear in the show.[1] The bow tie was left over from Ellis' appearance in a production of Cabaret while studying at New York University (she played the accordion).[1] Early episodes include the closing catchphrase "I remember it because the dudes don't" (based on the Nostalgia Critic's "I remember it so you don't have to"). Ellis eventually dropped this as it seemed anti-feminist; it gave the impression that the subject was being reviewed by a woman because it was not important enough to be reviwed by a man. After requesting submissions for a new catchphrase, Ellis decided against using any catchphrase in her work.[1]
Later episodes have been delayed by Ellis' enrollment in the Masters programme at University of Southern California and her subsequent travelling between New York and Los Angeles.[2] At the time of the competition for a Nostalgia Chick, Ellis was unemployed and had not received confirmation of a place at USC. She has stated that, due to the work load, she would not have entered the competition if she had known she would be going to USC.[1]
Lindsay Ellis[edit]
Ellis comes from Tennessee and moved to New York when she was 18. She now lives in Los Angeles (during term time) and New York.[1] Despite the sbuject and tone of the series, Ellis has stated that she likes some of the films, such as Labyrinth, although she honestly does not like Disney's Pocahontas, the subject of her initial submission.[1]

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Pocahontas (1995). The debut of the Nostalgia Chick. The Chick expresses her resentment toward this movie, pointing its many historical and geographical inaccuracies. The one flaw she points out most directly is that during the formation of the Jamestown Settlement, the real John Smith was an old man and Pocahontas was a preteen. In the movie, both are young adults. She also denounces Disney's attempt at making both characters look sexy and admits they actually have bland personalities. She also finds it confusing that Virginia is portrayed with so many tall cliffs. By the end of the movie, the Chick states that Disney has butchered our American history and left several questions unanswered, such as, "Why doesn't listening with one's heart bridge language gaps anymore?" The Nostalgia Chick reviews Teen Witch (1989). Ellis' first review released after winning the Search for the Nostalgia Chick contest. The Chick is turned off by Louise's selfishness, the film's lack of a plot or resolution, and the obnoxious pointless musical numbers. She admits that plenty of movies made for teenage girls during the 1980s suffered from a stronger focus on maturing and getting boyfriends than telling a coherent plot with strong conflict. During the review, she frequently calls Louise "the Messiah". She has more trouble relating to Louise than the writers hoped. | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Anastasia (1997). The Chick interprets this movie as Don Bluth surrendering to Walt Disney Animation Studios, who made much more money than him during the 1990s, as it tries to copy the formula of Disney movies of the era. Grigori Rasputin (portrayed by Doug "That Guy with the Glasses" Walker) frequently calls to complain about his negative portrayal. The Chick also objects Anastasia's final decision to elope with the con man Dimitri instead of accept her royal duties. However, she admits to liking some of the animation and music. The Nostalgia Chick reviews The Secret of the Sword (1985). The Chick begins by discussing how She-Ra: Princess of Power was little more than a short-lived female-oriented remake of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, but actually had a healthy run by children's show standards. She blames its cancelation on the fact the public rarely demands merchandise of tough women. She initially hopes that Secret of the Sword, the movie that marks She-Ra's public debut, is not as overly gay as the rest of the Masters of the Universe franchise, but is ultimately proven wrong. Since the movie was edited together from five early episodes of She-Ra, The Chick has trouble figuring out if the ending is near, declaring it has more fake-outs than Return of the King. Positives of the show she points out include the feminist attitude and Hordak being a more dignified antagonist than Skeletor. | |||||

Since the Sanderson witches appear after a virgin lights a magic candle, The Chick assumes the movie teaches children to lose their virginity as quickly as possible. Lightning strikes whenever she says the word, "virgin". She gets annoyed with Thora Birch acting like a "beastly child", Sarah Jessica Parker being typecast as a boy-crazy ditz, and Kathy Najimy acting slightly like a pedophile. She also finds it sexist for Bette Midler to plot revenge against "beastly child" for calling her ugly. The Chick believes Doug Jones playing a zombie is the best part of the movie. | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Spice World (1998). The Chick accuses the Spice Girls of promoting the stereotypes feminists previously worked to disprove. She declares this cheesy, episodic Spice Girls vehicle only has one redeeming factor: Meat Loaf's cameo. In a manner similar to such Nostalgia Critic reviews as Batman & Robin, The Chick finds the movie is so overly girly, she can predict such moments as a pillow fight seconds before they happen. She also points out that the objectifying of males is too disturbing for children, but the jokes are too immature for adults. She uses her "Girl Power Weird/Random Shit-o-Lever" to create a roulette predicting what will happen next to the girls. She also expresses disappointment at the Spice Girls' 2007 reunion, and notes sadly that for a band who promoted the idea that 'friendship never ends' it seems the girls can no longer stand to be in the same room as each other. The Nostalgia Chick reviews Labyrinth (1986). The Chick is entranced by David Bowie's package but criticizes Jennifer Connelly's acting and the movie's tendency to steer away from the plot. She claims it is easy to make innuendos of many of the movie's quotes and adds the phrase "That's what she said" after some of them. Whenever someone gets Hoggle's name wrong, the word "gag" runs past the Chick. Her roommate Nella occasionally offers snacks with phallic names such as "spotted dick" and "fried cock". During the "Chilly Down" number, The Chick plays the "Big Lipped Alligator Moment" emblem and audio used when she and the Nostalgia Critic reviewed Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. She also plays music from The Benny Hill Show during the scenes she believes are the most tedious. She says the movie as a whole is "lovably weird". | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Thumbelina (1994). The Chick starts by explaining how Don Bluth's movies seem to do well only when the Disney Company is in trouble (that is, if Pixar films aren't counted). Her main problem with Thumbelina was that it was a rip-off of several Disney movies like The Little Mermaid (including the fact that Thumbelina, like Ariel, was voiced by Jodi Benson), Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. She is also extremely annoyed by Thumbelina's unending pessimism and Jacquimo's neverending optimism (claiming that he must be on anti-depressants). The Chick points out that Thumbelina has too many suitors and that her decision to choose Prince Cornelius and shun the others is unjustified by the fact they only spend five minutes together. She appears to believe the songs in the movie, which Barry Manilow has written, are weird, and claims "Marry the Mole" to be "the worst song in any movie". She ends the review stating that she needs a new catchphrase. | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews The Baby-Sitters Club: The Movie (1995). The Chick comments that The Baby-sitters Club book series had a pretty genius way to appeal to girls by writing about stereotypical, relatable young women who both make friends and play with children. She notes that the movie goes into no detail at all about how the club was formed and has plenty of subplots instead of one main plot. The Chick finds that Jessie's lines are very cheesy, the subplot of Krissy bonding with her father has some unintentional innuendo, and Stacey's diabetes are taken too seriously. She also has trouble understanding the rap used to help Claudia with her test and the reasons for giving the greenhouse to the child-hating Mrs. Haberman. She occasionally plays music from Psycho to accompany footage of the children, who she finds more evil than the antagonists. Regarding her catchphrase contest from the previous episode, the Chick admits it was hard to pick the best entry and ends the review with a montage of her favorite suggestions. | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Xanadu (1980). The Chick begins by admitting she did not know much about this movie before many people requested she reviewed it. She gets excited over seeing Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly in the opening credits, and the UFO implying aliens will appear, but is ultimately disappointed by the implausible, non-sci-fi plot and Michael Beck's low-quality acting. She also notices Kelly's requests to make Beck his partner have unintentional homosexual implications. Despite the weirdness of such scenes as an animated musical number directed by Don Bluth, the Chick resists the temptation to call any scene a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment because none of the scenes have any connection to each other. She claims she is not surprised that the stage version did so well because the movie has overly stagy cinematography. As foreshadowing of her next review, the Chick closes the review by admitting she is mostly disappointed by the hints of aliens and robots going unfulfilled. | |||||

Despite opposition from The Nostalgia Critic, the Chick attempts to defy gender restrictions and trace the history of the Transformers from their origins in Japan to their revival under Michael Bay. She finds the TV show to be very routine and the original movie to be traumatizing during scenes in which the Generation 1 Transformers get killed. She also comments that the live-action movies suffer from the same flaws that plague many of Michael Bay's movies, such as potty jokes and unclear cinematography. When Bay (portrayed by Ellis' friend McCracken) interrupts the Chick's review, she takes the opportunity to directly insult him and announce that she plans to criticize another one of his movies soon. The Critic tries to review the movie before her, but she chloroforms him before he can. | |||||

The Nostalgia Chick reviews Armageddon (1998). As the review starts The Nostalgia Chick is seen waking up from a coma which was induced from the movie,Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Throughout the review she mentions her general dislike for Michael Bay's direction style. She brings ups that this film is where Bay's reputation for using large explosions started from and that the film is so inaccurate that NASA use it during some interviews where potential employees have to try and spot as many flaws as possible. She finds it odd that in the movie that the people at NASA are very stupid and the common man are the people with the plans. The Chick points out that the opening of the movie consist of many racist stereotypes, comparing it to Bay's depiction of the twin robots Skidz and Mudflap in Revenge of the Fallen. She talks about the cheesiness and cliched relationships of all the characters in the movie. She also notes that it takes the film almost an hour to get the main characters into space, but ironically this isn't a bad thing as the film goes rapidly downhill after that point. Near the end of the review she decides take a walk outside when she runs into Bay (again portrayed by Ellis' friend McCracken). He proceeds to gloat about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and telling the Chick that there is going to be another one with more outlandish things to upset her. At the end Bay flashes his testicles at the Chick blowing her head up with a "To Be Continued" appearing at the end. | |||||
