Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Coyelowo! Your additions to Draft:Center for International Private Enterprise have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Nathan2055talk - contribs 20:14, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hi Wikipedia community, I'd like to request that my account be unblocked. I'm simply trying to create my first contribution, a page for the Center for International Enterprise. I'm struggling to understand why I keep getting flagged for copyright as I am putting the content in my own words while simply citing the sources that I pulled from. I have not been copying text directly and have been changing it as necessary. I've also gone from using primary to secondary sources in the hopes that this would work, but it hasn't. I just want to create the page and it is not my goal to be unknowingly violating copyright infringement. I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give on this situation. Coyelowo (talk) 13:41, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

You have not addressed compliance with the paid editing policy. You describe the correct process for someone in your position to submit a draft, but for me to unblock you I would want to see edits in areas unrelated to your conflict of interest before permitting you to submit a draft; this would demonstrate your understanding of Wikipedia guidelines. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 16:40, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You haven't addressed the undisclosed paid editing. 331dot (talk) 14:48, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wikipedia Community. I've talked with other users in the live chat function for the site who have explained to me what I need to do to unblock my account. I would like to create a page for the Center for Internal Private Enterprise. When I create this page, I will be sure to first insert a COI disclosure. After that, I will be extremely careful to craft language based only on sources found from the media and unrelated to CIPE in anyway, and will submit the new draft for approval. Coyelowo (talk) 15:46, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Coyelowo, you have not yet responded to this comment by 331dot: You describe the correct process for someone in your position to submit a draft, but for me to unblock you I would want to see edits in areas unrelated to your conflict of interest before permitting you to submit a draft; this would demonstrate your understanding of Wikipedia guidelines. Are you willing to make, for example, 100 productive edits unrelated to your conflict of interest before resuming work related to your COI? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:15, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I'm trying to follow up on user 331 dot (talk) 's latest comments following my unblock request. I'm adding to my page as well as listing it here. I am interning with the CIPE. If this request is denied again, I would really appreciate someone telling me exactly what I need to do differently, as I'm very confused. Thank you. Coyelowo (talk) 17:00, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Procedural decline, only one open unblock request should be present at a time. Seraphimblade Talk to me 19:59, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Responding to @Cullen328 I would definitely be willing to make different edits if that can lead to my account being unblocked. I thought I did dress the paid editing issue and have placed the following on the top of my personal talk page and have also put it on the post I'm trying to create. You are disclosing that you are paid by "unknown"? That doesn't make any sense. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:37, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Coyelowo, right now, the template you're using does not use any values indicating who is employing you to make those edits. I do see, though, that you have said so in your unblock request. Are you willing to put this information in the paid-editor template and just need some technical help using it properly? Seraphimblade Talk to me 20:01, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello, I'm trying to unblock my account. I completely understand the previous reasons for my account being blocked such as me plagiarizing words, not listing my paid editor affiliation, and not listing the organization that has paid me to make those edits. I am willing to cite my paid-editor status, list the organization that is paying for me to make these edits, and I am willing to write things in my own words. Overall, I'm having trouble understanding the Wikipedia format, and using the correct templates in the right places, hence me creating multiple unblock requests. Previously someone had asked if I was willing to make x amount of edits to get my account unblocked, and I am. I'm willing to do whatever recommended to get my account unblocked and to also in the future use the appropriate tools/formatting. I just need some assistance with formatting and I'm not sure where to look for said assistance. I appreciate the previous contributors suggestions, and thank you for your continued help. Declined for housekeeping. Editor appears to have abandoned request. Coyelowo - feel free to open a new request in the future, should you return. Chetsford (talk) 06:05, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Coyelowo - I appreciate your disclosure. I'm concerned with unblocking you after you'd declared you are having trouble using Wikipedia as this indicates an issue with WP:COMPETENCE. If you were to (a) complete the seven missions of the Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Adventure, (b) outline a specific article you plan to make good edits to and what those edits would be, and then pinged me when those steps had been completed, I would feel more comfortable unblocking you.
