Talk Page Archive

{{helpme}} As you can see, my archive box is messed up. Any thoughts on how to fix this? I have checked the archiving values and nothing has been changed. Thanks, -electricRush | Sign! 01:40, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I'll work on it. I have no idea what happened either, I've never seen that code before. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 02:07, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
  • Try changing all the links in your subpages (user and user talk) so that nothing points back to User:ElectricRush's subpages. I suspect the messed-up archive box was caused by the fact that all of the archives were actually redirects. Please use the User:Download account only now, as you've usurped it :) GracenotesT § 02:42, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
    • I just usurped it about 5 minutes ago... before it was really messed up; it had about 5000 random pages in the Archives section. -electricRush | Sign! 02:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
      • Yeah. This was the edit by ClueBot III that caused the problem (warning: huge diff), which I reverted. I suspect the problem was accidentally caused by the rename. GracenotesT § 03:01, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

your welcome temp

hey electricrush, your welcome template seems simalar to the one i used. I wouldnt personally care if i created it, but i got it from User:TomasBat, and before declaring it on your user database you may want to check in on it. Tell that to MathCool10 as well. If you already did, dont mind this message. Just a friendly reminder. Assasin Joe talk 06:35, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I know it's from TomasBat, and so does download. We just generalized it for our name for easier use. MathCool10 Sign here! 22:44, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Okay, but Wikipedia user properties deny that right without permission from the Owner. Its not a big deal, i was just wondering if Download checked it. I thought he had, but i was just being sure. You do realize that you need rights from TomasBat or from Charles if he already has the rights from TomasBat to host that template on your userpage. No big deal though. UWs

How come after a final warning it begins again? -- Mentifisto 21:49, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm using a script, so it shows up as a first warning. Admins still get notified for the blocking, though. -download | sign! 21:50, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm using a script as well but it follows up from previous warnings. Where do admins get notified for blocking? You didn't report it in this case, no? -- Mentifisto 21:54, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm using Lupin's Anti-Vandal Tool. After a user or IP is warned, I think there's a category that's added, which admins check to block users. -download | sign! 21:55, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
No, it's primarily done on WP:AIV... you didn't report anything though because I've went through your contribs. -- Mentifisto 21:57, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Well most users just rollback the edit and warn the user. It's a bit tedious to inform admins of the vandal. -download | sign! 22:17, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

As many commented, he is unnotable and therefore does not deserve a place in the article. MathCool10 Sign here! 06:31, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
He is notable, and he adds to the article. Jack Black has won numerous teaching awards and designed the LA/SS curriculum for Odle Middle School. He deserves to be in the article. -download | sign! 06:31, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
  1. Is this information sourced?
  2. This is not important to the school. If he merits a seperate article, put his picture there, but otherwise, leave him out of the school picture. According to your logic, I could put a lot of teachers that have earned awards into this article.
MathCool10 Sign here! 06:39, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

(reset)

  1. Yes, this information is sourced both on the internet and in print. For example, Google "Jack Black teacher Odle".
  2. This is important to the school. Jack Black designed the curriculum, and I was planning to add information relating to this to the article later. In addition, when you look at the article about a band, for example, Linkin Park, do you not see an image of a band member? -download | sign! 06:43, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Nobody cares about Odle Middle School who doesn't have a relationship with it. And the supporters would always outnumber the opposers, e.g. Assasin Joe, Shengwoo, Ankur, etc. Anyways, I thought you were a fan of Jack Black. -download | sign! 07:00, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I left it on my talk page for future use. The nature of user talk pages kind of irks me as someone new to wikis who has IM'd for so many years, but I'm getting used to it. Not sure which side I'm on yet between those who prefer things to stay in one place and those who would have put their response in the "Re: Quote sections" area.

Block and Ban?

{{helpme}} I keep on seeing this question at WP:RfA; however, I still don't get the difference between a block and a ban. Could someone explain it to me? (And in simple english, please.) Thanks, -download | sign! 05:33, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

A block is an inability to edit Wikipedia. A ban is either a) a block that no admin will lift, or b) instituted by the community or Arbcom. //roux   05:46, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I understand it now. :P -download | sign! 05:47, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Roux put it well. But I'll add a little: an admin places a block (temporary on an IP, and often indefinite on a vandalism-only registered account) to stop an immediate problem -- vandalism, trolling, abusive behavior, completely out-of-control disruption, -- a variety of things. A ban is more formal, and requires community involvement in one of a number of ways: ArbCom action, a community consensus, or as Roux says, "a block no admin will lift", which is a de-facto ban. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 05:51, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, if you're blocked, you can recreate an account (but not one the account used, as this will trigger an Autoblock for default block settings). However, a ban is saying that the user cannot edit Wikipedia with any account. Or it could be a ban to a specific article(s)/topic(s)/namespace(s). MathCool10 Sign here! 02:50, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
'Scuse me, you don't get autoblocked if you create an account (I think), but you do if you edit with the IP. Hope that helps. Cheers, MathCool10 Sign here! 02:56, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

In an attempt to correct what you thought was an error or vandalism, you have reverted (arbitrarily and capriciously) several weeks of solid research and input. You should reinsert what you reverted immediately. I have set forth certain of your most egregious reversions below:

1) In the section entitled Presidents and Prime Ministers (International), I removed Mary Robinson because she is not an alumnus of CU; I inserted in her place, alphabetically, Pottering, the President of the European Parliament as of 2007. Having not checked to see why Robinson had been removed (for good cause), you removed the correct Pottering change, as well as numerous other correct, material, relevant, and critical entries, all of which had been carefully researched. (See the following.)

2) In the section entitled Cabinet members and Presidential advisers, you reinserted Judd Gregg as the United States Secretary of Commerce nominee in the Obama Administration, when in fact Senator Gregg withdrew his name from nomination for that position several days ago.

3) In the same section, you also removed Charles Evan Hughes as the former United States Secretary of State; Leon Keyserling, as the former head of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Harry Truman; Georgina Kessel as the former Secretary of Energy in the Cabinet of President Felipe Calderon; Carlos P. Romulo, who served 8 Philippine presidents as a cabinet member; Harlan Fiske Stone as the former United States Attorney General, and so on (in this section).

4) In the section entitled Judges, you have omitted at least one federal judge and the first Chief Justice of the Michigan Territory (appointed by President Jefferson).

5) In the section entitled Legislators, you have omitted 27 United States Senators and Representatives, including Senators DeWitt Clinton, Paul Douglas, Hamilton Fish, Arthur W. Mitchell, and Frank Porter Graham.

6) In the section entitled Soldiers, you have omitted that General Rickover was "twice awarded" the Congressional Medal of Freedom (a phenomenal achievement).

7) In the section entitled Mayors, you have omitted every mayor save one, so that the only mayor now listed in that section is Seth Low.

8) In the section entitled Candidates, you have omitted 3 candidates, one of whom is Senator Judd Gregg.

9) In the new section entitled Pulitzer Prizes, you have omitted David Levening Lewis, twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography.

10) In the section entitled Academics and Theorists, you have omitted 4 college presidents (all alumni of CU), including Colin Campbell (the 13th president of Wesleyan University) and Thomas Kean (the president of Drew University).

11) Finally, you have inadvertently changed all of the "See also" subheadings in every section that has such a subheading. These subheadings were carefully worded to reflect either "separate" or "additional" listings of notable alumni. The subheadings also included mathematical calculations based upon CU listings and "separate" and "additional" listings.

I have not enumerated all of the critical omissions, insertions, and errors your unintended reversion has caused. I would suggest in the future that if you intend to revert one current edit, you do that, and not revert weeks of unimpeachable work without understanding the totality of what you are doing or even checking superficially what you think (in a flash) is vandalism. In conclusion, my writing this to you is a waste of time that could have been used doing research. I know you are well intended but you have just engaged in a colossal blunder.

I am not accustomed to "talking" on these pages so I will simply wish you well, thank you for your immediate attention to this matter, and sign off 69.121.5.149 (talk) 08:03, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Done I apologize for reverting your work, and I have reinstated it. However, your last edit was very suspicious (adding a single name with no edit summary), and caused me to revert all your edits. In the future, to prevent other editors from reverting your work, you should consider creating an account and providing an informative edit summary. Also, no need to write such a long essay.  :) Just drop me a note and I'll fix it. Good luck and thank you very much for your edits! -download | sign! 17:56, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for restoring the mistake; the words "so-called" made seem to be biased. -download | sign! 19:27, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
OK, I changed it to "see also". "So-called" can be considered pejorative, that was not my intention. 68.126.20.227 (talk) 19:40, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I actually think "so-called" would be a better term to use, so I changed it back. On a side note, you might want to create an account so you can keep track of your own edits and not be confused for as an IP vandal. -download | sign! 19:45, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Dead people are not covered by BLP

Hi, re: this - dead people (and William IV is undoubtedly very dead indeed) are not covered by BLP and it is highly inappropriate to issue such warnings in such a case. I would also add that "he remained faithfull to his wife and took no mistresses" is not in any way a negative or highly controversial thing to say about anyone, living or dead. Please be more careful in future. DuncanHill (talk) 23:34, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Edit to Propionibacter Shermanii

Download, you posted a message on my talk page welcoming me to wikipedia, telling me my edit to propionibacter shermani had been unconstructive, and that it had been reverted.

I am not new to wikipedia. I was simply merging the aforementioned page into propionibacterium freudenreichii, where you will find a great deal of overlap. A suggestion for a merge had been proposed by another user. I placed a redirect on the source page as is suggested on the wikipedia help page about merging.

Please give me feedback. 4dhayman (talk) 00:32, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Before redirecting the page, you should see what information should be moved to the other article. In addition, you should only clear the page of its content after consensus is reached. Finally, please provide an informative edit summary to make sure that you edits are not taken as unconstructive. Good luck! -download | sign! 00:35, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh, very well. I had already transferred the non-overlapping information, but I did not know I should wait until a consensus before clearing the page. 2. Download, you don't revert name changes unless they are obvious vandalism, as they could be updating information for a sport team, dance club, etc.
  3. FYI, don't make the mistakes in the first place. There would be no need to correct them.
MathCool10 Sign here! 04:30, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

(reset) My reply:

  1. Those messages were from yesterday. I've learned since then.
  2. Yes you do revert name changes if they are suspicious, because chances are they are vandalism if they are coming from an IP. And I don't revert when they provide an informative edit summary.
  3. You are in no place to criticize me. Try reverting vandalism yourself and you'll see. And also you are the one with less than 1000 mainspace edits and with 50% of your edits towards the user namespace.

So actually go get some editing done, and don't flame people. -download | sign! 05:37, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and just a thought: You were the one who was asking for a barnstar from me. -download | sign! 05:45, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
An informative edit summary doesn't mean the edit wasn't vandalism. Also, reverts count as "special pages edited," not "mainspace."
Also, you should be the one to stop attacking other editors and giving out unjustified warnings. I'm stating the facts. I'm calling a spade a spade. MathCool10 Sign here! 02:11, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
I never said an informative edit summary meant the edit wasn't vandalism. And I am not attacking you, I am stating the facts as well. Please assume good faith and stop trying to destroy other editors. -download | sign! 02:29, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

The minor barnstar

Thanks much for the award. Much appreciated. It does refuel me. LilHelpa (talk) 01:40, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

No problem; it refuels me too giving people barnstars. :P -download | sign! 01:47, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
You give barnstars to almost every person you meet, even if they hadn't done much. This is not the point of barnstars; they are meant to congratulate people constantly making useful contributions to Wikipedia (such as reverting vandalism). MathCool10 Sign here! 04:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Look, MC10, what is your problem? (No offense, I'm quite mad right now) I've probably given only 10 barnstars in my whole time on Wikipedia and LilHelpa has done a whole lot for Wikipedia. Probably even more than a whole lot; look at his contributions. So. Just because you're jealous doesn't mean you should go around flaming people. -download | sign! 05:32, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
I wasn't talking about LilHelpa, I was talking about some of the previous one you gave out. And please don't attack me. MathCool10 Sign here! 02:12, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

(reset) You are the one attacking me. Look at the contributions of the users I gave the barnstars to before trying to play teacher with me. -download | sign! 02:27, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Ultra Beatdown.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Ultra Beatdown.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:19, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Order of Thistle revert

Wow you're fast, I was about to do that but you beat me to the punch. I was wondering I've had issues in the past with reverting multiple vandalisms (vandalism upon vandalism edits) is there an easy way to do that. I typically load the last good page, edit this page, and then save over. Is there an easier way? Admins really ought to lock down featured articles while they are on the main page. Thanks. Naufana : talk 23:02, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Haha thanks. I would recommend requesting rollback privilidges (you can see the description). It's really helpful. I would also recommend downloading Huggle, which is a really cool anti-vandalism program. -download | sign! 23:11, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Tips

OK, I shortened your signature to 3 lines (in my small laptop view). You can go see it here. Fix it a bit more. Also, make your images smaller. On a computer that doesn't have a wide screen, the images go off the 100% page. Make the images like 200px instead of 400px. MathCool10 Sign here! 03:19, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

When I say images, I mean images for your navigator. MathCool10 Sign here! 03:20, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
I saw your edits to my signature; thanks! I do not want to make the images smaller as they won't look as good. -download | sign! 03:25, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Improper use of AWB

According to AWB's terms of use, this edit, and edits like it are not what AWB should be used for. If you continue to make edits such as these you may have your access revoked. Just a heads-up. Thanks. --Closedmouth (talk) 07:10, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Okay, I checked your contribs, and all of your recent AWB edits are against policy. You should really have read the terms of use before you started using it. --Closedmouth (talk) 07:14, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand what I did wrong. Is is because I didn't make significant edis or is it because I made too many edits per minute? I checked over every edit that I made. -download | sign! 18:11, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
To do work like this (general cleanup), turn typo fixing on, and then "Skip if no typo fixed". –xeno (talk) 18:13, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, so what you're saying is that I shouldn't waste server time with the moving of items and adding blank space, and that I should only fix typos? -download | sign! 18:15, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
That about sums it up. The former changes have no visible effect to the reader so they should only be done alongside more significant edits, such as typo fixing. –xeno (talk) 18:16, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

(reset) OK, thanks. I understand now. -download | sign! 18:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

  • P.S., your signature is too long. See WP:SIG#Length and also WP:SIG#NT - you should not be using a substituted signature to subvert the mediawiki limit on signature length. –xeno (talk) 18:21, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
    • I will work on it. Thanks! -download | sign! 18:27, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Meh

It's an unusual headline, but 'meh' is the only thing I could think of. I mainly put the adoption template up because of my dismay at joining Wikipedia only to find Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Core topics/Core topics COTF completely dead per talk and Wikipedia:WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology/Collaboration of the Month and Wikipedia:Science collaboration of the month are festering.

I think I found the answer at Wikipedia talk:Article Collaboration and Improvement Drive#Proposal to close: 'Some of the other collaboration projects are not in much better shape. ... With the closing of ACID the Golden age of Wikipedian Collaboration comes to an end.' I don't know, I guess the adoption thing was me crying for attention since they all seemed like such grand ideas. --Wetenschap (talk) 20:56, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm not very good at this type of designing. You should try putting {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will help you. Also, remember to sign your posts!!! -download | sign! 02:58, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I keep forgetting haha -Axmann8 (Talk) 21:28, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Tick the "raw signatures" box in your preferences. MathCool10 Sign here! 19:20, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that's the problem lol, the raw sigs can't contain html... so I'm kinda screwed, but I think I got it fixed. -Axmann8 (Talk) 20:25, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

(reset) To allow it to contain HTML, create a page at User:Axmann8/Signature, and put what you want your signature to be in it. Then in the "Signature" field in your preferences, insert {{subst:User:Axmann/Signature}}. This will solve your problem. -download | sign! 20:35, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

THANK YOU!!! That's what I was trying to figure out. Before, I tried putting the actual signature code in the subst: tag. -Axmann8 (Talk) 21:29, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Sure, but please create an account first and consider becoming a faithful editor rather than making disruptive edits. Also, please do not blank my talk page as you did previously. -download | sign! 02:03, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
