Changes to Deshpande wikipedia page

I am the son of Peter Brackett, I personally know Deshpande from the age of 5. The statements that I've made are true, I have personally witnessed these facts. Were it not for my father, Deshpande would never have had such success. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Steve Brackett (talkcontribs) 07:15, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Jim, should I create a page for Peter Brackett and use it as a reference? How is one to publish events they have witnessed. This is first hand knowledge, not interpretations of media articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Steve Brackett (talkcontribs) 07:39, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

@Steve Brackett: A wp:selfpublished website, blog, video, book, article, etc., is not WP:RS. Use an RS. Give the lack of sources, perhaps it shouldn't be added to the article. Jim1138 (talk) 07:46, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Ilaro Court

Hello Jim,

The challenge with sourcing within the article is difficult since all the information about Ilaro Court is in hard copy at one of my country's newspapers as well as a book I have in my possession, so any referencing within the article would not be beneficial since the persons visiting would not be able to access the original document in any case. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MikeA7772 (talkcontribs) 01:40, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Small edit to domestic violence article.

I made the change to the sentence of Bancroft citing research in his book. The version of that book that I have has no citations at all so it seems more accurate to state that "Bancroft claims research exists" instead of "Bancroft cites..." when he, in fact, doesn't cite any research. Has this changed in newer a version of the book? 2601:404:CF80:1BC4:7820:6C:F0F2:9E4 (talk) 13:54, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Your wording completely changes the meaning of the sentence. That sentence has been there for quite some time; at least four years. It is more likely that the citation is simply not complete. A {{Page needed}} would seem more appropriate. Jim1138 (talk) 15:15, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jim1138:

To save me rewriting maybe thousands of words on this, please see this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Cleveland,_Texas#2011_rape

The entire discussion is here as well as some kind of poll(?). In short, when compared to wiki pages on other cities in the U.S., it appears there is some type of vendetta against a small city near Houston, Tx concerning a seven-year old breaking news event. Please note my comment comparing the wiki notation on a mass murder event in Chicago,IL history to what appears in the Cleveland, TX wiki page. Hi Jim1138,

a few months ago we created this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_Environmental_Footprint.

I work for thinkstep AG and we are heavily involved in the product environmental footprint topic. Unfortunately we created this page without the permission of our partner that we are working together with in the field of product environmental footprints. They want us to take down the page asap.

Is there any way this page can be taken down? This is really urgent and is affecting the relationship with our partner negatively.

Best regards,

Content, especially with wp:biographies of living persons must be wp:verifiable. To do so, wp:cite a wp:reliable source for significant content. See help:referencing for beginners. I have no idea how to verify what you stated above. Thank you Jim1138 (talk) 02:24, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
No worries Jim. Yeah, that's what makes this particular editing scenario difficult isn't it? Being unable to verify what Carey said on radio. Personally, I'd make the edit by putting a citation template next to Carey's name at the top of the page, but that's just me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.147.211.5 (talk) 07:45, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
Unless you can find an RS that others would agree on, it's probably best left out. I imagine there are a lot of middle names missing. Many people are probably glad they are. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 07:51, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

your deletion of my addition to the Hindu astrology testing section

I have opened a talk page concerning your deletion of my addition to the Hindu astrology testing section Kahouna Dreaming (talk) 18:34, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

hindu astrology

I have not seen your reply to my comments about testing section of the hindu astrology page. The section is unbalanced; not every one shares your skeptic stance. There are many national associations of vedic astrology. they are composed of dedicated researchers into the subject of Jyotish. Many of these people have high academic qualifications (i.e. David Frawley, Dennis Flaherty .Ronnie Gale Dreyer Gary Gomes,Karina Weil,Dennis M. Harness. I could continue... These are just a small sample. This subject (Jyotish) with its vedic traditions should be treated more respectfully and not dismissed, with no counter argument, by an author who probably has little or no interest in and probably not much knowledge of the subject (after all why would you bother researching a subject which you consider worthless!) The so called RS source which you quote in your 27 astrologers article would not meet any scientific criterion of a valid test. Over half of the astrologers used were amateurs (hobbyists as described ) the children used in the experiment were chosen by members of the skeptic organisation and lastly no accurate birth data was used (birth times did not come from birth certificates) It amazes me that you (or somebody) considers this as RS! Your source Dr Jayant Narlikar betrays his motives. He tries to maintain that Jyotish probably came to India from Greece and has no place in the vedic tradition as no mention is made in the four vedas (yajur,Sama, Rig and atharva) as a matter of fact neither do they mention ayurveda(which now has received acceptance in medical circles) stapatyaveda, bhagavad gita ,puranas, bramha sutras and many other works including Parashara (the founder of Jyotish) . Parashara is the atributed author of certain sections of the Ṛigveda i.e. verses 1.65-73 which are all in praise of Agni (the sacred fire), and part of 9.97 (v.31-44) which is in praise of Soma. This links Jyotish to the Rig veda via Parashara. To suggest that this classic work, written in sanskrit somehow came from Greece is laughable. Dr Jayant Narlikar wished to separate Jyotish from the vedic pantheon so that he may more easily dismiss it. The vedic philosophy and all of its branches of knowledge is held in reverence in India. Many universities offer degree courses in Jyotish. People with skeptic views will probably find this an anathema, however the lack of balance being demonstrated in this article does nothing to improve the current lack of credibility which wikipedia is experiencing. I look forward to seeing your response to this comment, and why I you think should not make the proposed amendments to the testing section of the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kahouna Dreaming (talkcontribs) 17:20, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification

I'm not familiar with Wikipedia editing, policies et.c, but i believe at least in the past i've seen talk page used similarly to how i used it there, for instance to point out what are seemingly blatantly false entries, which is why i consulted the talk page instead of outright editing the article. Do you have any advice on how to go about rectifying on what i believe is to be not only a falsehood, but pure libel? I'll watch under this talk page since it's entirely possible my IP will change in the IP-user talk, and i don't plan on being dedicated enough contributor to make an account. 87.92.152.36 (talk) 12:57, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Replied on editor's talk page. Jim1138 (talk) 20:51, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your informant reply. I've gone through the links, regulations and rules with a fine toothed comb and i kind of understand now why pretty much everyone involved with any sort of media critical movement or watchdog organization have such poorly represented, biased and downright insultingly wrong portions on their biographies, as well as the movements themselves. Wikipedia does not let the person speak for themselves other than that of footnotes such as "describes themselves as..." nor do youtube videos with larger coverage, general viewerbase or overall traffic count for Wikipedia's reliable sources, which is understandable in a fashion, but then small, highly biased, highly agenda-driven outlets like The Mary Sue, Breitbart, Jezebel, Heat Street or Mic.com are taken as so-called "reliable sources". It seems an unwinnable uphill battle to rectify these pages with factual data as opposed to whatever a journalist has decided to write under op-ed or similar glorified blog post, no matter how wrong or downright libelous. It is very unfortunate to see that a highly valuable resource like Wikipedia is used as a de facto battleground for ideological differences, and is smeared in the process. 87.92.152.36 (talk) 13:00, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Just out of interest, do you monitor this page as I have had to remove some fairly unsavoury comments previously, not sure how I can prevent this from happening? MaryL1970 (talk) 10:49, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

@MaryL1970: I probably won't watch the page. You can add it to your wp:watch list. Go to the page you wish to watch, click on the star. Go to your Preferences (at the top of any page while you are logged in). On the User profile tab, go to the bottom and select Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed and Email me also for minor edits of pages and files wp:MINOR edits to your watch list won't be emailed unless the second item is selected. The only criteria for a minor edit is that the "This is a minor edit" box is checked. (Rather strange). I see that you have setup your email, so I won't go into that. Dear Jim, thank you for your message. The linked article below ("Grundlegendes zur Masterarbeit") contains information that is not documented in Wikipedia. Let me give you an example. In the link the Bologna process is very well explained, why it was introduced and what kinds of works there are. The Bologna process is not even mentioned in the Wikpedia article under Germany, although this has caused major changes (eg abolition of the diploma thesis). In that sense, I would be glad if you would leave the link. greetings — Preceding unsigned comment added by Selina934 (talkcontribs) 09:15, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Per wp:verifiability any significant content must wp:cite a wp:reliable source (RS). See help:footnotes. Unhelpful edit summaries

Today I have encountered you restoring incorrect links to German wikipedia with the summary "policy?", and later restoring reams of incomprehensible garbage like "Causality and frame-independence (Poincaré invariance) are explicit, contrary to quantization in the instant-form method." with the edit summary "nope". If you want to be helpful, then when you revert, you note the policy or guideline that has motivated your revert. If you want to be unhelpful, then just putting a single irrelevant or vaguely insulting word is certainly a good way. So it seems you're in the latter camp. 51.7.23.71 (talk) 12:17, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

No subject

Hello, Jim.

You considered my edit of the Milpa page a mistake. The current source for the translation is the DRAE. While it is a very good source for words in spanish, we have to remember this word comes from nahuatl. It is not unusual for the DRAE to have mistakes in words originating in nahuatl, which can be easily contrasted with historical dictionaries and grammars.

Anyway, even the etymological analysis of milpa is wrong. The base word is mīlli with the locative suffix -pan. When joining the word stem with the locative, it looses the absolutive suffix, becoming mīl- -pan -> mīlpan. Final word n is very weak in nahuatl, so it is a very common sound to be lost, which is attested in various locative names. Tepalcapan (On the potsherds) becomes Tepalcapa.

The meaning of mīlli can be searched in various nahuatl-spanish dictionaries. The first reference I'd use is Karttunen, F. (1992). An analytical dictionary of Nahuatl. Norman: Univ. of Oklahoma Press. On this book, where we find a direct english translation reads: Mīlli. cultivated land, field / heredad (M), sementera (C). M and C mean Molina and Carochi, respectively. If we look for the meaning of heredad and sementera we'll find they both mean cultivated field.

A second source would be Siméon, R. (1977). Diccionario de la lengua Nahuatl o Mexicana: Redact. segun los documentos, impresos y manuscritos más auténticos. Mexico: Siglo Veintiuno. Which also gives the same meaning.

The locative suffix -pan means on the surface of... So the complete meaning of Mīlpan would be On the cultivated field. Hope this helps. Have a nice night.

Edits

The same edits have again been made on the pages Naseer-uddin-Naseer, Golra Sharif and Shrine of Meher Ali Shah but this time by a Wikipedia account user. The edits specially on Naseer-uddin-Naseer don't even make any sort of sense. Can we do something to get this account blocked as it might be the same person?

Zaydbinumar (talk) 10:54, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

@Zaydbinumar and PohranicniStraze: I suspect the anon and account will need to keep it up longer before a RfPP report will be addressed. Please "template" the user with a warning message. Use disruptive, delete, or something pertinent from WP:WARNING. Example:
{{subst:uw-delete1|Golra Sharif}} ~~~~
Start off with a 1, then progress through 4. Then report to wp:AIV. Use {{diff2}} to list evidence - example:
{{IPVandal|103.25.123.211}} persistent removal of sourced content and addition of primary sourced religious content. Changes IPs and repeats periodically. {{diff2|863988648|1}} {{diff2|863997524|2}} {{diff2|.|3}} {{diff2|...|4}} {{diff2|...|5}} ~~~~
Get the code 863988648 from the right of the url:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Shrine_of_Meher_Ali_Shah&diff=prev&oldid=863997524
There needs to have been an edit after this one otherwise it doesn't work. Be careful not to escalate too fast. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 00:16, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
@Zaydbinumar and Jim1138: Hello, both of you. I've actually templated them up to level 4 already, based on repeatedly violating the MOS. Since it's the same edits as in September, if one of you wanted to go ahead with the level4im message for any of the above reasons, that should work I would think. Double-Standard? "Personal Attacks"?

@Jim1138: Hello, you left a message on my talk page saying 'no personal attacks' and claiming that you "noticed that you made a comment on the page Talk:Misandry that didn't seem very civil, so it has been removed. Wikipedia is built on collaboration, so it's one of our core principles to interact with one another in a polite and respectful manner." What exactly about my comment do you think was not civil? I am unable to review the comment since you removed it, but nothing I said was intended to be a 'personal attack'. The comment you are referring to was a response to a comment that I feel was very disrespectful, in which the user @Binksternet refused to answer my questions (which were made in an attempt to reach a consensus regarding the page) and said "I'm not going to waste my time." - Why is this disrespectful comment permitted? It is hardly 'polite and respectful'. Please advise. Chimchongchiggedydo (talk) 12:59, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@Chimchongchiggedydo: Your edit history on misandry would appear to speak for itself. Here, I undid your edit with an ES of rv again, unsourced / not in source given (Note the 'again'). You reverted with an ES of No reason given why terms were removed; all terms previously added are valid.. I believe this falls under "trolling"? Unless you have something constructive to add here, please don't. Jim1138 (talk) 13:08, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
@Chimchongchiggedydo: You may wish to consider that your argument appears to be based on assertions of bad faith by other editors, and that they have grown tired of your aggressive attitude that is on display there. They are within their rights to declare that they're not going to engage, even going so far as to declare that they don't want to waste their time arguing with you: hardly disrespectful or unreasonable, given the manner in which you've interacted with them. Acroterion (talk) 13:10, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@Jim1138 I understand the error with the edit you provided and am not disputing that edit - after you reverted that edit, I provided a modified addition and attempted to provide a source. Instead of explaining why this most recent edit is unacceptable, it was reverted, and I was accused of ‘edit warring’ - even though this was the first time the added content was disputed, and was not the same as the previously reverted edits. After being told to attempt to reach a consensus regarding the page ‘Misandry’, I attempted to do so but was treated disrespectfully and called a “waste of time” - an obvious personal degradation that is not constructive, polite or respectful. I have followed instructions, asked questions, and attempted to collaborate on this page, and fail to see how any of my actions ‘fall under “trolling”’. Please advise. @Acroterion: You say that other editors “have grown tired of my aggressive attitude that is on display” - can you please explain to me what I said that you consider to be ‘aggressive attitude’? I understand they are within their rights to declare they’re not going to engage, but if they don’t wish to participate, why make personal attacks that they are not willing to explain? I have been told "Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.” - it is known that there is a disagreement, yet the user @Binksternet has not attempted to reach a consensus - so my question remains, why is this double-standard acceptable? I have not been disrespectful or unreasonable, and have tried to reach a consensus, have never personally attacked anyone, and have modified my additions based on other users’ suggestions; and yet, everything I say has been met with insults, disrespect, and criticism for not following rules that are not being followed by the user making the critiques against me! Please advise. Chimchongchiggedydo (talk) 15:01, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Re: Charles Dutoit

Hello Jim1138: I have been trying to do some editing on Charles Dutoit's Wikipedia page but my edits keep being reverted by 2 editors. I am providing references (one of my edit is a new job with the St Petersburg Philharmonic) which belongs in the biography as it is actual news. Mr Dutoit has been accused of sexual misconduct in the press and I am trying to provide truthful and referenced information regarding this. I have tried to add that none of these allegations have been proven in a court of law but am being told by one editor is it irrelevant. In my opinion, it is not irrelevant to clarify this as it is reported in such a way in the press and it is important to remember this fact. I believe Wikipedia readers need to have a concise and clear view of the situation. I also plan on working on the numerous paragraphs on these allegations as it is too long, according to Wikipedia, and some of the information is repetitive and redundant. I will also provide references to the honours and prizes as it is requested. What do you think and how do you suggest I proceed? Hi, Jim. Thanks for your message.

As far as the comment about Fred's bike, it was sourced to Fred's own Instagram page. [1]
