Philosophy of Anthropology[edit]

Philosophy of anthropogy refers to the philosophical discipline concerned with the issues of anthropology. As a branch of the social sciences, it is deeply related to sociology, ethnology and history. One of its main goals is to unify the several empirical investigations of human nature in an effort to understand individuals as both creatures of their environment and creators of their own values.[1]

Historical overview[edit]

Micmac indigenous people. The philosophy of anthropology seeks to provide answers to conceptual problems anthropologist often face when studing human societies and cultures at the same time it seeks to call back into question traditional assumptions in regards to human societies and cultures.

What fruitful new developments would not arise if only our whole philosophy would become anthropology. Johann Gottfried Herder[2]

Before the modern methods of research and fieldwork anthropology was regarded in the western world as a branch of philosophy. It took Immanuel Kant 25 years to write one of the first major treatises on anthropology, his Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View. Kant is not generally considered to be a modern anthropologist, however, as he never left his region of Germany nor did he study any cultures besides his own. Anthropology, as we know it today, is thus primarily a post-Enlightenment endeavour that encompasses other empirical areas of investigation. Modern philosophy of anthropology's main goal is not the creation of a theoretical framework with which we can explore deeper the empirical results of the social sciences, but the development a broader perspective intended to help tackle conceptual loopholes brought about by common assumptions. Philosophy of anthropology also tries to examine the problems in value theory that arise when anthopologists confront cultures that do not share their own society's standards.

Epistemology[edit]

Philosophy of anthropology is intimately related to the issues of epistemology as it tries to examine the way knowledge is acquired and shered. There are at least two major strands in the study of epistemology applied to anthropology. Cognitive anthropology, as described in the works of Lévi-Strauss and the structuralists that see cultures and societies as a rule-governed set of structures. It radically differs from social relativism as being...

Translation, interpretation and culture[edit]

The work of a major philosopher, WVO Quine has been the source of much research on the areas of translation, interpretation and semantics; which are important areas in the human sciences. There has been considerable controversy within anthropology concerning the methodological problems posed by the investigation of alien cultures. Semantics is related to such questions as 'is translation possible?', 'Can I judge the truth/falsity of the beliefs of members of an alien culture?', 'Is rationality only a "modern" phenomenon?'.[3]

Page titles[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Carlos Slim Helú a different title by copying its content and pasting it into Carlos Slim. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other articles that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Re:White Hispanic[edit]

I understand your angry b/c I called you dumb, and I'm sorry for calling you that. I regret using that word, and I should have been more wiser not to use it. Even though I've called you dumb, that doesn't mean that you should attack me personally in my talk page.

Anyways, going back to the subject. The reference listed for Kenny Florian says he French, Armenian, Spanish, Italian, and German ancestry which makes him White. He doesn't list Amerindian ancestry. I don't know what more do you want since it seems you are the one who views him mestizo b/c of his skin color. The people Armenia and the Southern portions of Spain and Italy are mainly have darker skin tones than those in the Northern portion of Europe and Western Asia/Caucasus. Also, when you said that the source doesn't "prove" he is not mestizo, do you want a genetics test or something? You know not all White people are homogeneous, many have some amount of non-White genes. Even in the US, you have Whites w/ black or indigenous genes, and by going through genetics, how are we sure Ilan Stavans or any of the people pictured in White Hispanics has non-White genetics. Race is mainly self-identification, not genetics. Hopefully this has cleared up any animosity b/t us and cleared the confusion caused by this. Thank you for reading. Do you happen to have any more information about Professor Erdman? I myself looked him up online but was unable to find any info about when and where he was born, or even whether he is still living. I ask mainly because the first sentence of the article states that he "was" but the article is classified under "living people". Let me know if you can do any better than I did at finding anything out- he seems to be a very private person. Lithoderm 20:59, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Slovenia–Mexico relations. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Slovenia–Mexico relations. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:23, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An old friend returns[edit]

I believe that User:LatinoAussie is back at Latin American Australian (which he has just renamed to Latin Australian. I strongly suspect that the User:Plzppl is a sockpuppet of LatinoAussie/Cazique/TeePee etc - the name was created on the day the LatinoAussie account was closed, and show the same behaviour.

If you have time, could you please:

Mexican of European descent[edit]

While not thrilled with your language in the comment box, I rechecked my sources on that article and decided that it did not support that there were more "whites" numerically in the Mexico City area, just that race distinctions were strongest because of the power structure. However, another source does state that "white" is associated with Spanish colonialism and historically they were concentrated in Mexico City. It might not be possible to know for certain if most "whites" are in the north or anywhere else since there is not formal census of race, even by self-identification.
