I've added an explanatory note, to avoid reader confusion and further editing wars. The British use of "suburb" is simply different from the American use, because the UK has so few "true" American-style suburbs. In my opinion, the British use of "suburb" would include American-style suburbs, but also areas like Coney Island, Flushing, and maybe Long Island City, all within New York City.
