Shahid Kapoor as Aditya Kashyap in the film

Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor), a demoralized industrialist, gets even more depressed after attending the marriage of the girl he loves the most. Feeling ashamed to face the world, he walks out of the marriage gathering and boards a train in the night. Over there, he meets Geet Dhillon (Kareena Kapoor), a beautiful talkative girl who is leaving Mumbai to go to her hometown - Bhatinda (Punjab).

In the beginning, Geet irritates Aditya to a large extent and every meeting becomes mental torture for him. She discloses big plans to him of eloping with her boyfriend Anshuman (Tarun Arora) as she fears resentment from her parents. Geet irritates Aditya to the point of getting him to leave the train. As she tries to get him back on the train, she ends up missing it and the two find themselves stranded on a desolate station with no luggage or money. Geet confronts Aditya and tells him that he is now responsible of reaching her safely to her house in Punjab. Both of them begin an idyllic journey through the exuberant North Indian heartland, and make their way through buses, taxis and camel-carts to reach her house.

On arrival, Geet's family (Pawan Malhotra, Dara Singh and Kiran Juneja) mistakens the two for lovers. Before this misconception can be cleared, Geet escapes to her boyfriend in Manali. Aditya leaves with her, confirming the suspicion that they are lovers. In Manali, Aditya feels empowered to return to Mumbai and resurrect his ailing business.

Destiny despises Geet's love story as Anshuman avoids and dumps her. On the other hand, Aditya begins to do well in life after he resurrects his failing business empire. One day, Geet's family, who think that she is with him, confronts Aditya. He is shocked to learn that Geet has not returned home. He takes it upon himself to find her and tells her family that he will bring her home in ten days.

Aditya finally tracks her down in a Himalayan town and is traumatized to learn about Geet's misfortune. Consoling her to face the circumstances, he manages in patching up the relationship of Geet and Anshuman, and they decide to travel back to Bhatinda. Back in Bhatinda, Geet's family again mistaken the two for lovers. Trying to clear the misconception, situations make Geet realise that she is in love with Aditya not Anshuman, and therefore they get married.

Production

The film began shooting from March 20, 2007 in Kulu Manali[4] and later continued shooting in places like Shimla[5] and Himachal Pradesh.[6] The title of the film was decided by a popular vote.[7] Moviegoers had a choice between Punjab Mail, Ishq Via Bhatinda and Jab We Met.[8]

On the night of October 23, 2007, a special preview of the film was organized at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai for those associated with the film and their families.[9]

The distributors of the film, Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd, announced that Jab We Met will be remade in four South Indian languages -- Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam -- by corporate entity Moser Baer.[10]

Response

India

The film opened to positive reviews on Friday with a fairly good opening of 70% all over India and later increased to 90% during the weekend.[11] Making a total first week net business of 11.75 crores from 350 cinemas,[12] the film went into the second week with very strong collections[13] and saw a massive increase with 40%-50% increment in shows worldwide.[14]

Continuing its strong march in week two with collections of over 9 crores and a two-week total of 21 crores,[15] the film was declared a hit.[16] During its third week, Jab We Met managed to add another 2 crores to its collections[17] but suffered a setback due to the arrival of Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, which resulted in the number of shows for the film being reduced.[18] Due to popular demand and the poor performance of the latter, the following week saw an increase in the number of prints for the film across the country,[19][20] and resulted in a 50% increase of the film's collections.[21] Completing fifty successful days at the box office on December 14, 2007,[22] the film received a super-hit status by BoxOffice India[23] and continued running successfully in cinemas with greater number of shows than the much later-released, Om Shanti Om.[24]

As of February 2008, Jab We Met has made a nett business of over 30 crores,[25] and has emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year.[23][26] On January 30, 2008, it was announced that to celebrate the success of its 100 days run at the box office, PVR Cinemas in Delhi would have a special screening of the film on Valentine's Day.[27]

Overseas

Jab We Met also opened well overseas especially in the U.K., where it was released a day before its worldwide release of October 26. Debuting at number 10 in the U.K., the film grossed £ 11,488 on its advance previews night and £ 144,525 on its opening weekend, collecting a total of £ 156,013 from 31 screens.[28] The film continued to do strong business and garnered excellent collections during its second week, making a two-week total of £ 325,996 [approx. Rs. 2.67 crores]; the film was declared a super-hit.[29] Over its next five weeks, Jab We Met collected a total of £ 43,529 from 54 screens[30][31] and made a grand total of £ 424,681 [approx. Rs. 3.30 crores].[32]

Reviews

Many critics praised the film by saying that it was one of the finest romantic films to come out of Bollywood in 2007.[33][34][35] IndiaFM gave the film a 3.5 out of 5 rating saying, "Jab We Met is as refreshing as an ice-cold watermelon juice in scorching heat."[33] The Times of India gave the film 4 out of 5 stars concluding, "The film belongs to Shahid and Kareena who pitch in memorable performances and lend a whole new meaning to the boy-meets-girl story."[36] Indiaglitz.com gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and indicated that the film was "Shahid-Kareena's DDLJ"[37] while Subhash K. Jha wrote, "...Jab We Met is the kind of cinematic experience that is hard to come by in this day and age of smoky cynicism and borrowed rage."[38]

The lead performances were received positively by the public as well as the critics.[36][39] Taran Adarsh commented, "Shahid delivers his career-best performance in Jab We Met. He goes for a complete transformation vis-à-vis his looks and attire to look the character he has chosen to portray and the understanding with which he enacts his part is worthy of lavish praises. Kareena is in top form as well. Jab We Met is a turning point in her career [personally as well as professionally]. Fantabulous -- that's the right word to describe her work this time. The confidence with which she handles the contrasting characterization speaks volumes. This film should do for her what Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) did for Kajol."[33] Joginder Tuteja from indiaglitz.com wrote, "...it would be a pain if any of the two actors do not get awarded and rewarded for their performances..."[37] while Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN noted, "The real magic of this film lies in the performances of its two main leads who seize your attention from the moment they first appear on screen."[39]

Apart from the performances, the director, Imtiaz Ali, also won favorable reviews. Indiatimes wrote, "After his much appreciated Socha Na Tha (2004), Imtiaz goes bigger and better and the result is nothing but flying colours"[40] while Bollyvista.com noted, "The plot of the film has been done quiet a few times before in India, as well as internationally. What sets it apart is the excellent writing and direction by Imtiaz Ali."[41] Subhash K. Jha praised the chemistry between the two lead pairs saying, "...there are sparks...and the ones between Kareena and Shahid are so unselfconsciously genuine that you end up looking at the characters rather than the two actors going through a series of brilliantly conceived and energized incidents..."[38] while Ashok Nayar wrote, "Shahid-Kareena might have put an end to their relationship in real life, but the love is present all over in Jab We Met."[42]

Music

Untitled

Composed by music director, Pritam, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, the film's soundtrack was released on September 21, 2007 by lead actress, Kareena Kapoor on the musical show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007.[43] Joginder Tuteja from Indiafm.com gave the music 3 ½ out of 5 stars saying, "In 2007, Pritam may have been come up with good music in number of films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Awarapan, Hattrick, Kya Love Story Hai and Just Married. But if there is one album that impresses most after Life...In A Metro and turns out to be most satisfying experience, it is Jab We Met. The album is a perfect example of how to get a quality soundtrack which mixes songs for different segments of audience."[44]

The film's soundtrack debuted at number 8[45] and later jumped up to number 5 during its second week.[46] Over the next several weeks, the album steadily began climbing up the music charts,[47] and saw the album sales soar in an exponential manner after the film's release.[48][49] During the week of Nov 19, the album finally managed to replace the soundtrack of Om Shanti Om and moved up to number 1,[50] but fell back to number 2 the following week.[51] Despite competition from the release of newer soundtracks, the album has stayed at the top for over nine weeks,[52][53] and has become one of the most successful albums of 2007.[54]

Jab We Met's soundtrack was featured on Rediff's and IndiaFM's year-end list of 2007's Top 10 Music Albums.[55][56]
