"Love Lockdown" is a song written and produced by American hip hop artist Kanye West. It is the first single off West's album 808s & Heartbreak.

Background
"Love Lockdown" was written by Kanye West less than ten days before it premiered live as the finale of the 2008 MTV VMAs on September 7, 2008. West has cited the track as his "favorite to date", saying "go where your heart takes you". The song marks a drastic change for West, standing as his first solo single to feature no rapping, instead sung using the vocal effect of Auto-Tune. Due to negative feedback from fans, Kanye re-recorded the song. In addition to re-recording the vocals, the newer version of the song uses "new taiko drums". The video reached number one on BET's 106 & Park for the first time on October 27, 2008. The new re-recorded version was uploaded on Kanye's blog on September 16, 2008.

The single, cover art, and a 30-second preview shortly appeared on the iTunes store on September 16, 2008, but the song was not available to download. The single was quickly taken off of the store, due to its being the first version. The second version of the song, along with the final artwork, was added to the store on September 18, 2008.

On November 8, 2008, an updated, remastered (and third) version of the song was released as a free download on Kanye's official blog. According to him, the new version contains "808 and tribal drums [that] sound way fuller".

The cover is very similar to the album cover for 808s & Heartbreak. In fact, West has revealed that, due to his hectic schedule, he was unable to properly hire an artist to draw a cover for him, so he had to do it himself with nothing but a graphics program and this image.

The video was filmed in West's home and features Kanye in an all white room, also dressed in white singing the verses of the song. West claims inspiration from Christian Bale's portrayal of Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron's 2000 film version of American Psycho, a homage that is echoed in the presentation of the video's interiors, which mirror Bateman's New York City apartment in the film. During the choruses, African tribe members appear, beating on djembe drums. More tribe members are shown with each chorus, and near the end, two very tall female figures with drawings like the Nazca Lines appear. Interspersed throughout the video are images of what appears to be a spacecraft. The video ends with Kanye laying in a fetal position on the couch in the white room, similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

"Love Lockdown"
Song

"Love Lockdown" is a song written and produced by American hip hop artist Kanye West. It is the first single off West's album 808s & Heartbreak.

Background

Due to negative feedback from fans, Kanye re-recorded the song. In addition to re-recording the vocals, the newer version of the song uses "new taiko drums". The video reached number one on BET's 106 & Park for the first time on October 27, 2008.[3] The new re-recorded version was uploaded on Kanye's blog on September 16, 2008.[4]
