There are three fully playable characters, which are progressively unlocked by playing each character's story in the game. The player begins with Sonic; other playable characters become available when they are encountered. Solaris initially existed as a flame which was worshiped by the citizens of Soleanna. The Duke of Soleanna led experiments into Solaris, in the hopes of using its time control powers to allow humanity to correct its past sins. However, during one such experiment, Solaris became unstable and split into two forms - Iblis, the raw power, and Mephiles, the conscious mind. Mephiles was sealed into an artifact known as the "Scepter of Darkness" whilst the Duke was forced to seal Iblis inside of his young daughter, [[Princess Elise The Third]]. Before dying from wounds caused by the accident, he told his daughter to grow up to be a strong queen who would never cry as doing so would destroy the seal on Iblis.

After killing Sonic, Mephiles was quick to rejoin with his counterpart, once again forming their complete form of Solaris. Plunging the world into darkness he prepared to devour time itself. Before he could achieve this, he was defeated by a combined assault from Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver. His defeat spirited Elise and Sonic back to before the fateful experiment. After some contemplation, Elise chose to blow out the tiny flame that was Solaris and thus change history by erasing him from existence. During the battle with the three super form hedgehogs, Solaris attacked shooting out meteors and firing a large laser that can hit its enemies from any distance. He increases the number of meteors and laser he fires in his second form (he can fire out 6-14 lasers). Solaris is one of the few bosses in the series whose attacks take rings away from Super Form characters. Another power Solaris has is during the "End of the World" level (where the characters are trying to revive Sonic), is to create massive orb-like "eyes" that suck anything around them, including enemies the characters encounter. Touching the eye result in instant death, regardless of rings or even an invincibility power-up.

*'''Iblis''' was an immortal monster of mass destruction and was [[Silver the Hedgehog]]'s main enemy in ''[[Sonic The Hedgehog (2006 game)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]''. It was a creature that was born from "The Flames of Disaster", and takes the name "Disaster" from this. Iblis appears to be a mindless creature, who only seems to be interested in causing destruction. Its primary form had four arms and was a lava-like version of [[Perfect Chaos]] in appearance. Fitting its appearance, Iblis's attacks are fire and lava based. It can shoot out lava rocks, breathe fire, and the form it has that has arms are strong enough to lift up large buildings. Originally sealed inside Princess Elise by her father over 10 years before the game, Iblis was inadvertently released by the "Iblis Trigger" a few years later. Iblis continued to destroy the world up until, and including, Silver's time period in the future. In Silver's story, [[Silver the Hedgehog]] and [[Blaze the Cat]] continuously battle Iblis, but it ended up proving too powerful for either of them to defeat, since it had the ability to continually resurrect itself. Thus, Mephiles advises Silver and Blaze to depart to the time period right before Iblis' final transformation to stop [[Sonic the Hedgehog (character)|Sonic the Hedgehog]], referred to as the "Iblis Trigger" from destroying the world. Silver found out how to seal Iblis. He then confronted the monster, but in order to stop Iblis permanently, Blaze was forced to seal it within her, seemingly destroying both of them. However, as the intention was to trap Iblis in another dimension, it was possible that Iblis and Blaze wound up in the reality Blaze came from in ''[[Sonic Rush]]''. In addition to the form described earlier, Iblis' other forms are one like a giant snake with a ripped up face, the first one with two arms and has legs, and his original form, a ball of flame. Blaze says that Iblis has a "final form", but that form is never seen. Because none of the events of the game happened, Iblis never existed.

In the end, Mephiles kills Sonic with little effort, causing Elise to cry over his death and, as a result, release Iblis, allowing Mephiles to fuse with him and transform into Solaris. Mephiles is destroyed along with Solaris during a battle against Shadow, Silver and a revived Sonic in super form. Mephiles is voiced by [[Takayuki Sakazume]] in the Japanese-speaking version of ''Sonic the Hedgehog'', and is voiced by [[Dan Green (voice actor)|Dan Green]] in the English-speaking version. Mephiles has many powers, including the ability to travel through time and throwing purple balls that are the same as the balls he travels inside when time traveling. He has another ability that allows him to make numerous 'shadows' which are floating forms with one blank eye, and a similar look to a cartoon ghost. With a Chaos Emerald, Mephiles was able to cover the battlefield in his second fight against Shadow with a watery pool of darkness, where his 'shadows' were able to form together to build large, black, one-eyed creatures and where Mephiles was able to hide safely. With two Chaos Emeralds, Mephiles is able to form near-unlimited copies of himself. He's also the only character to have successfully killed Sonic within the game series canon.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that was made to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was developed by Sonic Team, published by Sega and directed by Shun Nakamura.

The game shares its name with two earlier video games, a manga, a television series, a comic book series and, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog himself. To disambiguate, the game has been called by a number of different aliases, including Sonic '06, Sonic 2k6, Sonic 2006, Sonic 360, Sonic PS3 (even though it was not exclusive to either console) and Sonic Next Gen. It was released on November 14, 2006.

This is the second Sonic game to receive an E10+ rating after Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic Unleashed was the third.

Plot

Sonic the Hedgehog

Princess Elise presides over the peaceful city of Soleanna. During a parade, the city is attacked by Doctor Eggman, who seeks the key to a dangerous weapon that would help him conquer the world. Sonic must rescue Elise from Eggman, attempt to stop a new hedgehog from the future, Silver, and travel through time to discover how Eggman, the weapon he seeks, and Silver the Hedgehog are connected.

In the city of Soleanna, Princess Elise is starting the Festival of the Sun. Dr. Eggman attacks with his fleet of ships with the intent of kidnapping Elise, but Sonic intervenes and flees with Elise. Despite Sonic's best efforts, Elise is captured, but she throws a Chaos Emerald to him before Eggman takes her away. Sonic then meets Tails at Castle Town, and they set off to find Elise. They soon find her in the desert, but Eggman attacks them with the Egg Cerberus. He is defeated and Sonic, Elise, and Tails escape.

After running through the plains, Sonic is attacked by Silver the Hedgehog. Sonic defeats Silver, but Silver turns the tide using his telekinetic powers and is about to kill him when Amy comes to Sonic's rescue. During the scuffle Elise is captured again. Sonic races after her and finds Knuckles in the warehouse district, where he joins Sonic and Tails. The trio go to Eggman's base in White Acropolis. Once they encounter Eggman, he negotiates a bargain with Sonic: if Sonic gives Eggman the Chaos Emerald that Elise gave him earlier, then Eggman will let Elise go. Sonic places the Emerald in a slot, but, unsurprisingly, Eggman does not make good on his end of the deal. He traps Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails in a force field, activates his prototype time machine (which they happen to be standing in), and propels them into the distant future.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles go to a destroyed base where they find Silver, Blaze, and a dark figure named Mephiles appearing in the form of Shadow. After a discussion where Mephiles tells Silver that Sonic needs to be destroyed, they disappear. Tails reads on a computer that the princess was killed when Eggman's battleship exploded. They then find Shadow and Rouge in an area near a volcano and find a Chaos Emerald, but it disappears into a monstrous figure named Iblis. Sonic defeats it and Sonic's team returns to Soleanna of the present day via Chaos Control

Sonic finds Elise at the train station and saves her from an exploding train, but Silver attacks once again. Elise is captured in the confusion but Sonic is saved from Silver again, this time by Shadow. Silver, mistaking Shadow for Mephiles, starts to fight Shadow instead. Sonic rescues Elise when she jumps from Eggman's ship. Eggman attacks again, but Sonic defeats him and Sonic and Elise flee into the jungle.

Later, Eggman threatens to destroy Soleanna with his armada of ships unless she comes back into Eggman's custody, and Elise surrenders herself. Eggman sets off to find a Chaos Emerald. En route to saving Elise, Sonic is joined by Silver, who now expresses his concern for Elise's safety. Upon catching up to Eggman, Eggman's battleship explodes, with Elise on board. After a moment of grief, Silver and Sonic realize they can use Chaos Control to make a portal to the day before the launch. They do so, and Sonic and Elise reunite. Sonic defeats Eggman one last time, and he and Elise escape the exploding battleship.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow's story begins after the events of Shadow the Hedgehog. He is invading Eggman's base, trying to find Rouge the Bat, who was sent to retrieve the Scepter of Darkness. He finds her and they escape, battling Dr. Eggman, during which the Scepter is shattered, releasing Mephiles who has the shape and abilities of Shadow because he was released in his "shade" or, in other words, Shadow's shadow.

Mephiles flings Shadow and Rouge to a devastated future where they discover a shut down Omega and are sad to leave their friend behind. They then meet up with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, who were sent there by Eggman. They return to Soleanna, whilst Shadow remains to confront Mephiles. Rouge finds Omega and orders him to wait in time to deliver a Chaos Emerald to Shadow in the alternate future. Back in the future, Shadow is told that humans will betray him, but refuses to join Mephiles, who takes on a new form as a crystalline version of Shadow. A battle ensues where Shadow and Omega defeat Mephiles, who flees to Soleanna. The two return to Soleanna and meet up with Rouge. Shadow goes looking for Eggman to ask who Mephiles really is, and asks Rouge to keep track of Mephiles.

Shadow finds Sonic under attack from Silver, and rescues him, engaging Silver in combat. Shadow overpowers him with Chaos Control. Silver also uses Chaos Control, which creates a rip in time/space. In order to understand more about Mephiles and Iblis, they decide to witness the accident themselves by traveling in time to the failure of the Solaris project. Mephiles and Iblis are revealed to be two separate components of Solaris, and they must be sealed to be defeated. Back in the present, Omega pursues Mephiles and defeats him. Omega finds out that he was the one who will defeat and seal Shadow in the future.

Now reunited, Shadow, Rouge, and Omega discover that Omega will be the one to seal away Shadow in the future. Rouge expresses that no matter what happens, she will be on Shadow's side. The trio chase Mephiles to a desert temple with a new scepter, but fail to seal him in the new scepter because of Mephiles' new form. Mephiles uses his powers, along with two Chaos Emeralds, to summon a clone army of himself. Before he attacks, Mephiles reminds Shadow of humanity's betrayal against Shadow in the future. Without hesitation, Shadow tells him that if the world chooses to become his enemy, he will fight as he always has. Shadow then removes his power inhibitors and, in a huge burst of energy, defeats Mephiles and his clones.

Silver the Hedgehog

Silver lives 200 years in a devastated future. Silver's time period is completely destroyed by what is known as the "Flames of Disaster". He and his friend, Blaze the Cat, battle an immortal being known as "Iblis". A mysterious figure named Mephiles appears and informs Silver that he can stop the Flames of Disaster by defeating Sonic, the so-called "Iblis Trigger", the main cause of the "Flames of Disaster". Mephiles, Silver and Blaze travel to our dimension to prevent Sonic from destroying their own. Silver is separated from Blaze, though he resolves to kill Sonic.

After meeting Amy Rose who is searching for Sonic too, they locate Sonic in the city. Sonic and Silver battle and Amy intervenes at the last moment. When the two later talk, Amy says that Sonic would never destroy the world and adds that she would choose Sonic over the world. Silver, a little saddened by Amy's disappearance, meets up with Blaze and redetermines that he must destroy Sonic after a moment of doubt. Silver attacks Sonic again but this time Shadow appears. Silver mistakes him for Mephiles. The two fight and Shadow overpowers Silver with Chaos Control. After inducing a Chaos Control using their respective Chaos Emeralds, Shadow tells Silver to "follow me if you want the truth" and the two hedgehogs travel to the past to the Solaris Project. They arrive during the plan's failure and the release of Mephiles and Iblis. Silver discovers that Iblis was sealed inside 8 year old Elise by her father, The Duke of Soleanna. Mephiles is sealed in the Scepter of Darkness by Shadow. The two realize that the monsters must be sealed to be defeated.

Silver, realizing Mephiles' treachery, returns to the present, and meets Blaze. They assist Sonic in his attempt to save Elise; however, the three arrive too late as the Egg Carrier explodes, killing Eggman and Elise. Sonic and Silver use Chaos Control and Sonic travels back in time to save Elise, giving Silver a Chaos Emerald for him to return to his time. Silver and Blaze travel forward in time to fight Iblis and successfully defeat him. Silver attempts to be the vessel to seal Iblis, but he is not accepted. Blaze is, and kisses Silver before she seals Iblis and herself in another world, wishing Silver good luck and disappearing.

Last Story

As Sonic and Elise return to the city, Mephiles rises from the ground and launches a beam of energy that impales Sonic, killing him instantly. After she realizes Sonic is dead, Elise cries, releasing Iblis. Mephiles then used the Chaos Emeralds to merge with Iblis, forming Solaris, the sun god worshiped by the residents of Soleanna, who creates his own world to destroy time itself. Shadow, Silver, Eggman, Tails, Knuckles, Rouge, Omega, Amy, Elise, and Sonic's body are all transported to the space-time rift created by Solaris. Everyone grieves over Sonic's death. Eggman informs everyone that Solaris can't be defeated in the present, since it exists in all timelines. Silver suggests that they destroy Solaris all at once, but Shadow counters, saying it is not possible without Sonic. Elise feels Sonic's presence in the wind and Silver realizes that they can use the Chaos Emeralds to revive him. After a lengthy search, they find the Chaos Emeralds and revive Sonic with Elise's kiss, transforming him into Super Sonic who then expands his power to allow Shadow and Silver to transform into their super forms, and together the three hedgehogs defeat Solaris. Sonic travels with Elise to the birth of the "Flames of Disaster". Both Sonic and Elise know that, if the Flames are put out, Solaris will never exist. They both realize, however, that the death of the Flames of Disaster would also result in the duo never meeting. Knowing this, Elise begins to cry and shouts that she doesn't care what happens to the rest of the world; as long as she and Sonic are friends, that's all that matters to her. Sonic convinces her to smile and abandon their meeting. With tears in her eyes and a small smile, Elise gently blows Solaris from existence, thus erasing the whole game's events and happenings. Afterwards, the timeline changes so she is never kidnapped, and never meets Sonic. In a final cutscene, it shows the opening of the game, though somewhat altered. While Elise is on her ship, she feels a familiar blue wind passing by her. It turns out to be Sonic, who watches her from the roof and smiles; because of this, it is possible that Sonic and Elise retained their memories of the game's events, despite the paradox they caused.


Cast

This game features the Original voice cast in the English version. Likewise, the Japanese version has mostly the same voice actors from Sonic X and the Sonic Adventure series. In addition, Lacey Chabert, who is coincidentally a long-time Sonic fan, voices Princess Elise, marking the first time in the franchise that Hollywood talent has provided voice-over work for a Sonic game.

Gameplay

Single-player

Although each character plays the same levels, each character's unique abilities allow him or her to get to different areas of each stage, and deny them from accessing certain items.

Action Stages are where the bulk of the gameplay takes place, whereas Town Stages are free-roaming locations where the player can talk to non-player characters and explore, as in Sonic Adventure's Adventure Fields. For each of the action stages in the respective stories, gold medals are obtainable by achieving high ranks in these stages.

There are a total of eleven stages. A ranking system exists for each of the levels and town missions, providing ranks calculated from score, rings and time remaining. The highest rank is S Rank, followed by A Rank, down to the lowest, D.

Several downloadable extensions have been released that add features to single-player gameplay. These include 'Very Hard' mode, a more difficult version of the game; 'Boss Attack' modes, which allow a playable character to engage in continuous battles with all of the game's bosses; and 'Team Attack Amigo' mode, which allows players to play through the entirety of the game as amigo characters.[1]

Multiplayer

Sonic the Hedgehog features two styles of multiplayer game play that offer two player action.

The first mode, Tag Mode, is a co-op type of play between Sonic, Silver and Shadow. Two players, each one controlling a character, must work together to clear levels and collect Chaos Emeralds. In this mode, lives are shared. The second game style available is Battle Mode. Battle mode pits two players against each other and has them race to a goal in the selected level.

The previously rumored mini-games that were to allow up to four players to play simultaneously/alternately (Quiz, Race and a few others) seem to be missing in the final release of the game.[2] The back of the game case describes the game as online-capable, the only reason for this is because there is downloadable content on the marketplace, however, it is noted that there is no such option to do so in the menu.

Music

The main theme for the game is entitled His World, performed by Ali Tabatabaee (Iranian rapper/vocalist) and Matty Lewis (American guitarist/vocalist) both of the band Zebrahead.

HipHop/R&B Artist Akon has done a remix to Dreams Come True song "Sweet Sweet Sweet", a song from the album 'The Swinging Star'. This track was originally composed by Masato Nakamura, and sung by DCT's Miwa Yoshida. Added as the ending theme for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, The song is entitled "Sweet Sweet Sweet ('06 Akon Mix)",[3][4] in Japanese and "Sweet Dreams" in English. It is Sonic's ending theme for the game.[5].

Shadow's theme, "All Hail Shadow", one of the vocal songs from the Shadow the Hedgehog soundtrack, was rearranged by Crush 40; it was originally sung by the band Magna-Fi.

Silver's theme, "Dreams of an Absolution" by Lee Brotherton (from the Remix Factory, AKA Bentley Jones) was written by Mariko Nanba and Brotherton. As Bentley Jones, Brotherton performed a special version of this song with Richard Jacques live at the Summer of Sonic convention in August 2008 called Dreams of an Absolution ~Ballad Version~. The song bears resemblance to the music for the Green Hill Zone, although this has never been confirmed by Nanba.[6]

Elise's theme, entitled "My Destiny", was performed by singer/songwriter Donna DeLory.

The in-game music is composed by Tomoya Ohtani, Mariko Nanba, and Hideaki Kobayashi, with Namano Mushrio, and the Japanese Geroinic Band & Symphony.

The soundtrack to Sonic the Hedgehog is available to buy from Sega Direct. It was released on January 10, 2007. There are two different albums: the three-disc OST and the single-disc Vocal Traxx.

Reception

Sonic the Hedgehog has been widely panned by critics. Across thirty-nine reviews, Game Rankings recorded the average score as 46%: the second poorest average for an Xbox 360 title at the time of the game's release.[26] Sites like IGN admitted that "it offers a few good ideas, and a handful of exciting moments, but none of this helps the game recover from a catastrophic loss in control."[19] GameSpot called it "a mess from top to bottom,"[14] while GameTrailers concluded that the game is "flat-out unfinished, unfairly difficult, and most importantly, just isn't much fun."[17]

Dave Halverson of Play Magazine is notable for initially giving the game its biggest praise; a score of 9.5 for the 360 version. This was dropped down to 8.5 in the next issue, with Halverson explaining how he was incorrectly told that the load times and glitches in his review copy would not be in the finished product.[23] Later, Halverson gave the PS3 version a 5.5, expressing his disgust not only for how the glitches and load times had not improved, but how the game actually ran marginally worse despite the extra development time.[22]

In a February 2007 interview for Kikizo magazine, Sonic Team producer Yojiro Ogawa was asked to comment on the game's glitches, control problems and loading times:

The reason why we probably ended up with what we see today, involves a lot of reasons. One is that we did want to launch the title around Christmas, and we had the PS3 launch coming up, but we had to develop for Microsoft's 360 at the same time and the team had an awful lot of pressure on them. It was very hard for the team to try and see how we were going to come out with both versions together with just the one team. It was a big challenge.
