STDU Viewer, is a compact viewer for PDF, DjVu, Comic Book Archive (CBR or CBZ), XPS, TIFF, TXT, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, PSD files. It works under Microsoft Windows, and it's free for non-commercial usage.
Features
STDU Viewer offers a wide range of supported formats, which are most often used to store scientific and technical documentation, as well as various books in electronic format. Using this program it's possible to view standard PDF documents, comic strips, which were saved in archive files with CBZ or CBR extension, scanned images in DjVu format, multipage TIFF, XPS and TXT files, and such image formats as BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, PSD.
The application has a multiple document interface with tabs which allows the users to view several documents at once and displays page thumbnails in the side toolbar. It allows the user to create his own bookmarks, adjust brightness, contrast and gamma while viewing documents. The Settings window of the program offers the opportunity to select text font, size and color for text documents.
STDU Viewer is available in two languages: English and Russian.
The program supports three types of search algorithms: usual, search mask and using regular expressions. It not only allows the user to navigate through the search results, but also displays the list of results.
One more option is the possibility to export the opened pages (all or only selected pages) to text or image document. This way, STDU Viewer becomes a simple converter.
The program lets the user rotate pages of the document to 90 degrees, that could be useful for those who like reading books on the computer screen, when the monitor is in its portrait position. It also allows the user to fix some badly scanned pages.
The size of the setup file is 1,7 Mb, the installed program is about 2,5 Мb (for example, the setup file of the Adobe Reader 9.1 weighs 26.1 MB,[1] and Adobe Reader installed is around 335 MB[2]).
The application works under Windows 2000, Windows XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7.
History
The first version of STDU Viewer was the version 1.0.60, released the 13th of September, 2007. The program supported only PDF (including hyperlinks embedded), DjVu and TIFF formats.
The Unicode characters have been supported since the version 1.0.76. The version 1.1.3 offers the opportunity to select text and copy it to the clipboard and select a part of the page and copy it to the clipboard as an image. The full text search option is available from the version 1.3.1. The Print document function first became available in the version 1.4.7. The version 1.5.16 allows the user to export documents to text or image. The following image formats BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, PSD have been supported from the version 1.5.261, and CBR, CBZ, XPS formats - since the version 1.5.311.
Critical reception
The current version of the program doesn't support all popular document formats. It doesn't read DOC, ePUB, LIT, HTML and online help CHM files.
When printing PDF document, a large temporary file is created, so the printing process is slow.
