Casanovva (Malayalam: കാസനോവ) (theatrical release name: Confident Casanovva) is a 2012 romantic action thriller Malayalam film directed by Rosshan Andrrews. The film stars Mohanlal and Shriya Saran in the lead with Lakshmi Rai, Sanjana, Roma, Jagathy Sreekumar, Lalu Alex, Riyaz Khan, Nova Krishan and Shankar forms an ensemble cast along with four debutantes, Abhishek, Shamsi, Arjun and Vikram. The film's soundtrack was composed by Gopi Sundar, Alphons Joseph and Gowri Lakshmi while the background score was composed by the former.

It is director Rosshan Andrrews's third film with Mohanlal after Udayananu Tharam and Evidam Swargamanu.[2] The film was released on 26 January 2012 in India.[3] The Hindi remake rights of the film was bought by Ketan Shah.[4]

Plot

The film is about Casanovva, a playboy who likes to mingle with girls. Casanovva is the owner of Casanovva’s Eternal Spring, an international chain of flower boutiques. He has at his beck and call a faithful array of female followers including his staff, friends and former girlfriends, who will do anything for him. Casanovva is a man who believes that "love can cure crime", a man who knows how to respect a lady, a man who runs the most successful flower business in the world. With his penchant for the good life, it is little wonder that four enterprising young criminals decide to use him in their quest for some quick money.

Production

The film's production was launched at Confident Cascade in Bangalore on January 24, 2009. The event was attended by film personalities including Mohanlal, Vishnuvardhan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Lalu Alex, Arya, Arshad Warsi, Lakshmi Rai, Priyanka, Priyadarshan, Sibi Malayil, Suresh Kumar, P. V. Gangadharan, Antony Perumbavoor, and the film unit members.[5]

Filming

Casanovva started its shooting on 27 September 2010[6] and was scheduled to release in February 2011. However, the film has faced delays and its release date might be postponed.[7] The first schedule was scheduled to finish in Dubai by 12 December 2010.[7] It has been reported that Mohanlal is giving prime importance to another film, China Town, which is leading Casanovva to a delayed release.[7] The second schedule has started from the last week of April 2011 in Dubai.[8] The shooting at Dubai has ended by the first week of May 2011 and the next location is Bangkok[9] will start shooting from September 14[10], Fourth schedule Start shooting from October 20 at Bangalore[11], The remaining song will be shot in the Last schedule that commences from December 12th at Cape Town, South Africa.

The soundtrack features four songs composed by Gopi Sundar, Alphons Joseph and Gowri Lakshmi, with lyrics by Gireesh Puthenchery, Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma, Jelujay, Gowri Lakshmi, Rosshan and Sanjay. The background score of the film has been composed by Gopi Sundar.

Casanovva released in 202 theatres in India on January 26, 2012; 138 theaters in Kerala and 64 theaters outside Kerala making it the widest release for a Malayalam film, with simultaneous opening in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and other Indian cities. The film released overseas in February 2012.

Reception

Critical response

The film opened to mixed reviews from critics.

  • Rediff gave the movie and said that "Casanovva disappoints big time".[13]
  • Malayalamnet.in rated and said that its a pure romantic movie with some good sequences and nothing more.[14].
  • Moviebuzz from Sify called the film as "below average" while commented that "Casanovva perhaps has some nice moments but you would need real patience to spot them".[15]
  • Nowrunning.com rated and said, "One thing is for sure. If he were made to sit through what the modern age Casanova goes through for a drawn out three hours, Giacomo Casanova wouldn't be pleased a bit".[16]
  • EnteCinema.com rated and commented that "A visually entertaining movie with shots matching to Hollywood standards. All Malayalis can be proud of that".[17].
  • Metromatinee.com review calls it a "stylish entertainer" and said "Casanovva is stylish, entertaining and glamorous as the title shows it all".[18]
  • IndiaGlitz.com called the film as "a stylish flick" and said that "Casanovva is one film that may satisfy the fans of the star and those who like technically sound, slickly made films".[19]

Box office

The film had the largest opening for a Malayalam film, and collected 2.16 Crores on the first day of its release[20]. It collected 8.07 crores in its first week[21]. The Hindi remake rights of the film is sold for 1.5 crore (US$180,000). [22] Its satellite rights have been sold to Asianet Communications.
