The Aerotrain is a driverless people mover system located within the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.
Opened in 1998, the Aerotrain consists of two stations, one in the Main Terminal Building and the other in Satellite Building A. The system transports passengers between the two terminals. It is due to be extended to the other new terminals in the future. It is similar to Hong Kong International Airport's HKIA Automated People Mover.
Upgrading works on the Aerotrain had caused the service to be suspended between November 1st, 2010 and March 15th, 2011. Passengers were transferred between the Main Terminal Building and the Satellite Building by bus shuttles during the upgrading period.[1]
General information
The train is fully automated and driverless. In accordance with the Spanish solution, when the train reaches the platform, the exit doors will open first for passengers to disembark, after which the entrance door at the other side will open.
Part of the train track goes underground to cross the [[taxiway]. The ride between the Main Terminal Building and Satellite Terminal A takes an estimated 5 minutes.
Rolling stock
The rolling stock is manufactured by ADtranz. It comprises two Innovia APM 100 trains with three cars per train (originally two cars), of which each car has a capacity of 249. The trains have an operating speed of 56 km/h with a 3-phase 600V power supply at 50Hz. A 100 hp DC Electric Motor constitutes the propulsion system of the trains.
Expansions and extensions
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), through its wholly owned subsidiary Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd, had upgraded its Aerotrain services at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) by installing two additional coaches worth RM22 million.[2]
