George C. Thomas Junior High School also known as Thomas Junior High is a public secondary middle school located in the south section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the intersection of 9th Street and Johnson Street, just north of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex with residential neighborhoods of Marconi Plaza, Lower Moyamensing, Packer Park, recreational parkland of FDR Park, historical and new business development center the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and located within the boundaries of the Sports Complex Special Services District directly on the Oregon Avenue urban corridor of small shops, restaurants anchored by larger shopping plaza's on the east and west end of Oregon Avenue and near the revitalized commercial area of Passyunk Avenue. It shares a site with the D. Newlin Fell School.
The school serves portions of South Philadelphia programmed for grades 7 through 9, and is a part of the School District of Philadelphia. In 2009, a Charter School college bound curriculum was established at George C. Thomas and the interior building was renovated along with the main entrance on the southside facing Johnson Street.
History
It was built in 1920-1921. The intention is said to be that the building was deigned for an elementary school use, but the School District redirected it's use to meet the enrollment of students in the geographic area. This appears to be confirmed by the dual identical building being constructed on the same site as an elementary school.
The middle school was named for George Clifford Thomas a notable person in early American history of the mid 19th century. He was a prominent banker, Protestant Church and civic leader, philanthropist and collector of art, rare books and manuscripts.
He was a banking house partner of Jay Cooke and Company in 1861 where he took a prominent part in the work accomplished by the firm, which strengthened the finances of the government so that it was enabled to carry on the Civil war. Later he partnered at the financial firm of Drexel & Co. Also for the Protestant Church, for thirteen years, he was treasurer of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church and for twenty one years he was deputy to General Conventions. He was elected accounting warden of the Holy Apostles and was superintendent of that Sunday School for 41 years.
In 1870, Mr. Thomas originated and organized the Sunday School Association of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, of which from the year 1875 to the day of his death in 1909, he was vice president. Among his collection of art, it included works by Whistler, Delacroix, Millet, and Troyon </ref>[2]
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.[1]
Building and Architecture
It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1920-1921. It is a three-story, eight bay by three bay, brick building on a raised basement in the Colonial Revival-style. An addition was built in 1952. It features two projecting entrances with stone surrounds and a brick parapet.[3] The original building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places listings in South Philadelphia. On the same square block is D.N.Fell Elementary School k-6 grades (facing north on Oregon Avenue), with a shared school yard between the buildings. Both schools are of identical architecture and design. Thomas Junior High 1952 addition built after the original construction was added to accommodate Junior High sports and gymnastic programs.
Transportation
SEPTA serves the school with Routes 7, 23, 47 and G. Students living at least 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away are given a free SEPTA transit pass which is issued every week in order to get to school.[4]
Feeder patterns
Feeder middle schools include Norris S. Barratt Middle School.[4] Feeder K-8 schools include F. Amedee Bregy School, D. Newlin Fell School, Albert M. Greenfield School, Southwark School, and Stanton School.[4]
School Song
- A cheer for our colors, Come raise the standards high! Brown and Gold! Brown and Gold!
- Colors with a cherished meaning, That the world had e’er been told.
- Floats the Brown for “Thomas” courage: For the Victory Gleams the Gold.
- Onward then, O Classmates, onward!
- Ne’er fear to face the fray; For Thomas Middle School, We will strive to win the day,
- Alma Mater thou has helped us, And, in turn we give to thee,
- Our hearts and our hands, That thy name shall e’er stand,
- As the best Thomas School, Praise to thee!
