Tangla is a town and a Town area committee in earlier Darrang district and present Udalguri district (BTAD) in the Indian state of Assam. It was a prominent business place Jute, Beetle Nut, Rice etc. and a host of small scale industries and centre of culture in erstwhile Darrang district. Mangaldai-Bhooteachang Road passes through Tangla Town connecting numerous Tea Estates along Indo-Bhutan Border. Tangla is famous for its weekly markets which is held on every Tuesday and Friday where vendors from the town itself and far flung areas come to trade in their Vegetables, Garments, Livestock etc.
Tangla has a diverse population base including Assamese ,Bengali ,Bodos, Tea-tribes, Rabhas, Marowari, Muslim, Christian. Festivals Rongali Bihu, Durga Puja, Eid, Good Friday etc. are celebrated each year
The distance from Tangla to its district head quarter Udalguri is 32 KM and 32 KM to Mangaldai, District Head Quarter of Darrang. The State Capital of Assam, Dispur is 99 KM away.
Demographics
As of 2011[update] India census,[1] Tangla town is divided into 4 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Tangla Town Committee has population of 17,183 of which 8,883 are males while 8,300 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1593 which is 9.27% of total population of Tangla (TC). In Tangla Town Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 934 against state average of 958. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Tangla is around 957 compared to Assam state average of 962. Literacy rate of Tangla city is 86.16% higher than state average of 72.19%. In Tangla, Male literacy is around 89.79% while female literacy rate is 82.28%.
Tangla Town Committee has total administration over 3,872 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Town Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction. Tangla mainly consists of a heterogeneous population with 12.45% of Schedule Caste (SC) while Schedule Tribe (ST) consists of merely 9.62% of the total population
Current status
Tangla is among the top educational hubs of lower Assam, delivering positions in HSLC and ASHEC [ https://www.assamtimes.org/node/10997 ] .Tangla which once used to be a hub of businesses has been recently marred by violence, forced closure, extortion, due to which its poll position has been replaced by nearby town Kalaigaon.
Employment
Out of total population, 6,229 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 5,351 were males while 878 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job, service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 6229 working population, 91.06% were engaged in Main Work while 8.94% of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work. Tangla has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 70%. In Tangla, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Assamese is the major language spoken in the urban area while other widely spoken languages include Bodo, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Hindi, Punjabi, English, etc. Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali are spoken widely in the surrounding areas.
Economy
The economy of this place is heavily dependent on business. It is a business an commercial hub of the entire district. Cultivators of nearby places finds a good market to sell their products. There are a number of co-operative societies as well as banking institutes. This place also has two weekly market days, one on Tuesday and another on Friday. These markets attracts a large number of people around the district these days, often making transportation very cumbersome in the town.
Governance
Tangla is a part of Mangaldai Lok Sabha Constituency. Kamali Basumatari is the present MLA from 64 No. Paneri LAC.
Transportation
The town is well connected to the rest of the state by the Mangaldai-Bhutiachang (MB Road/State Highway 4) which allows people to access the National Highway 52 at Mangaldai. The place is well connected by Railways too,It has Tangla railway station which has daily trains to Kamakhya, New Jalpaiguri, Dekargaon, Rangiya and Naharlagun. Bus services also provide good connectivity to different parts of state.
