Request: Vectorize. Connormah (talk) 03:44, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- I got bored and did one... I think I'll need help on the others, though. Connormah (talk) 02:32, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- If possible, please don't transfer the gold fringe to the vector images, just to keep it consistant with other US military flag images, see Flags of the United States armed forces. In fact, most of the images on that article could use vectorization. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 01:55, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Did another one, with your suggestion, without the fringe. Connormah (talk) 04:57, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Hurricane track picture looks messy and only semi-informative

retired atlantic hurricane tracks
Article(s): Brazil
Request: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Retired_Atlantic_hurricane_tracks.png
This graphic should be redrawn so that the hurricane track data is first sorted according to category, so that the strongest hurricanes remain "on top" of the hurricane track spaghetti. This would make the picture much clearer, both for the audience and the intended actual knowledge the picture purportedly mediates. There are other similar hurricane track graphics that should be redrawn. Gwrede (talk) 15:20, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): As this image was generated with rather specific software (Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tracks) and data, I think it would be a better idea to first contact the original image author (User:Titoxd) or any other users associated with the software project (list). If that does not work out, then I can give it a try. —Quibik (talk) 17:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
U.S. Capitol Diagram
Article(s): United States Capitol
Request: It would be great if someone could create a diagram of the Capitol building shows the parts--Senate side, House side, Rotunda, maybe something like this. Obviously better sources would be needed. The type of thing I am looking for was done here for the Little White House or here for the White House. gren グレン 02:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Bodiam Castle
Article(s): Bodiam Castle
Request: Could a free version of this plan be created? The article on Bodiam Castle has a section describing the layout and function of the building and a plan such as this would be very useful. I think the only unnecessary detail is the vaulting in the postern tower and main gateway. Unfortunately the plan did not come with a scale. It would be preferable to retain the names but to make them stand out a bit more if possible without obscuring the plan; if that can't be done, numbering would work and then the numbers explained in the image description. I intend to take the article to FAC in the next couple of weeks, so any help would be gratefully received. Thanks, Nev1 (talk) 14:47, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- It would be near impossible to create a free version without access to older blueprints now in the public domain. /94.193.242.248 (talk) 23:20, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'm going to use this opportunity to clarify something I've been wondering about. A vector rendering of this file seems to have been created already, but based on (as far as I can tell) the non-free file in question (which by now is deleted). Question is: doesn't this make the new rendering non free as well? Martinor (talk) 12:46, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- If the original image was not under a free license, then the derivative work is most certainly non-free. It must be converted to a fair use image. Too bad the original rationale has been deleted. —Quibik (talk) 13:31, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- I have had conflicting adive on this matter [1][2] [3] as plans seem to be a difficult case regarding copyright. I for one, am completely confused, but to be on the safe side will add a fair use rationale to the vector version (at least it's clearer than the image I uploaded). Nev1 (talk) 16:57, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- This is indeed a confusing case. I only recommended making it fair use based on the fact that the original image was considered non-free in its description. The original image indeed might not have been eligible for copyright, as it's factual data (you can't really draw the plan of the castle in a different way). The only thing I could consider "creative" would be the text layout. So I'd argue it should be ineligible for copyright. —Quibik (talk) 17:58, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- This issue is both complex and interesting, and even more blurred than I initially anticipated. Isn't a fair use rationale the least optimal solution? As long as the original map, «seem to lack any "expression" needed to pass the threshold of creativity», as it seems per a fairly thorough argument[4], which [5] also touches on, it should be licensed as free - under a wp compatible license chosen by the later creator. On another part of this: Concerning a free use rationale, am I to understand that the issue I recall (3.b - Minimal extent of use) of combining such with vector graphics is resolved? If I may suggest; slow down a bit, please. This discussion seems to concern more than just this isolated issue. Martinor (talk) 00:11, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Also, as a note, if the original is found to be free, then the derivative must probably also be tagged with {{pd-ineligible}}, rather than the free licenses it previously had. Quibik (talk) 00:32, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Are you sure? As far as I can understand: not necessarily, if the latter version "contains no original authorship", then yes. Otherwise it might not be the case. (Original authorship and 'the threshold of creativity' defined on an individual basis? - might be the core of this) Martinor (talk) 01:15, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

- As the creator of the vector version can I just say that the svg version is not totally identical to the original. For starters a different font was used in the captions and there are some minor variations in the plans themselves as a result of the tracing. Currently it resides on my computer as an Illustrator file and I would be more than happy to amend it based on advice here so as to make it copyright free. I also have no problem making the final file PD. So just tell me what is required and I'll implement the changes. If it's any help I have started re-drawing it in Autocad as well, though I'm not quite as au fait in that application as I am in Illustrator so it will take longer. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 01:44, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

What it's supposed to look like
Article(s): A plethora of articles related to Australia, including the Australia article itself.
Request: The image is an unfinished vector version of the Australian coat of arms uploaded to commons by a user who couldn't continue working on the project. The shield partitions themselves are quite easy (they can just be taken from state flag badges), so all that needs to be done is basically just adding detail the to the shield-bearers, shrubbery, etc. to conform to actual usage, and colour fixes as demonstrated by the raster image. I've also posted this at Talk:Australia#Vector coat of arms, but I'm told to expect apathy over there, there've been issues with the COA since April 2007. I have no doubt an experienced vector graphics editor would find this an easy task and it would be much appreciated. —what a crazy random happenstance 12:01, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- This has come up several times and every time we point out that it shouldn't be vectorized. Look at the painting and you will see that it is carefully pained with tiny strokes. An SVG would be enormous and have no purpose. --Beao 17:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- I disagree, all non-photographic information should be turned into vector images, as our guidelines currently mandate. The vast majority of national coat of arms have already been recreated as svg's despite their complexity, and this image is not even particularly detailed compared to many that are already vector files, look at Bhutan, Burma or Sweden. PS: I never suggested that this be auto-traced, which I could easily do myself and which would come with the problems you describe, I suggested that it be recreated in vector. Manually. Which wouldn't be too complicated, and would result in a nice, clean image like the British and Czech coats of arms. —what a crazy random happenstance 17:51, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- Those are not as complex in the way I'm trying to explain. But I wont stop anyone from trying to vectorize if you find it useful. --Beao 14:08, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- Last time I knew "we" regularly vectorized flags, coats, etc. Certainly a well done vector is equal to or better than a raster. See, for instance, Panonkin's magnificent Image:US Great Seal Reverse.svg (Featured image on Commons). Having said that, there was a TERRIBLE traced vector version of this that was deleted a while ago. That I know gave alot of people a bad taste for vectorizing this. I especially second this request. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 02:13, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
- What is an svg supposed to be for? The shield in itself is a prime candidate for vecorization, but I suspect that it's been done already.. Martinor (talk) 11:25, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Request: Create a squash (sport) barnstar for the above project please. Thanks. Arteyu ? Blame it on me ! 17:39, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Still waiting for someone to do the barnstar. You guys might want to use some images from WP:Squash. Arteyu ? Blame it on me !
- I think the reason no one has done this so far is because "squash" is such a specific thing. What would a "squash" barnstar look like? I suggest that we just have a "sports articles" barnstar ,which would do the trick, would be easier to create, and would be easier to recognize. threecheersfornick (talk) 04:18, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
- You might want to use this pictogram or this squash ball for the barnstar. I also suggest that you use this silverish barnstar or this gold barnstar instead of the brownish one. Arteyu ? Blame it on me ! 16:52, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Vectorized
Article(s): Wings
Request: Just received this message, please update the image as requested: Hi KVDP - I like your diagram "File:Wing_steering_components.JPG" but it's misleadingly labeled. The green sections should be described as "Flaps", not rudders, and are used only to increase overall lift, not for steering. The article Flight_control_surfaces gives a good outline. By the way, only flaps (not the the ailerons, on the wing tip) have spoilers/speed-brakes because ailerons already operate upwards to reduce lift.
I'll remove the image from the Rudder page, where it's misleading. Perhaps you could relabel it for "Flaps" on the Wing page and remove the reference to steering. Also, flaps are not normally used during cruise, they're tucked up right into the wing. A small extension is used for initial takeoff, climb and cruise is normally done at 0 flaps, full flaps reserved for landing, and flaps + speed break only when on stopping on the runway. KVDP (talk) 10:53, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Done I vectorized the image and removed the legend from the image, as it is hard to see anyway and should probably be provided in the image caption instead. —Quibik (talk) 20:27, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Request: cleanup, transparent background, colors from first version and/or flag... Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 10:25, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Well, I tried to enhance it a bit. It was a lot of manual drawing without any real source (except of two versions of original file) so it may be incorrect in some details. It looked awfully on transparent background so I decided to keep it white. As usual we could use a SVG version but I doubt it's possible wihout better source :) Miko3k (talk) 21:43, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your hard work, it does look better! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 10:06, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- I have restored the color version, any chance we could color the new png? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:56, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I extracted the seal from the color version JPG. I think this is a good compromise, as it actually has finer details visible, even though it has a lower resolution. The only drawback is that the text in the bottom is less readable. What do you think of this version? —Quibik (talk) 15:57, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I have restored the color version, any chance we could color the new png? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:56, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

- I enlarged the image and added the sharper text to it. I'm not sure if its really an improvement, though. —Quibik (talk) 18:21, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): Done. I added the missing bit. Does it look correct? —Quibik (talk) 20:47, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, that looks better. Thank You. but could that bit that was added be made just a little biger? its supposed to be about double the current size? Gman124 talk 22:17, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Are you sure about that? I added that curvy bit by superimposing text with the same size as the text in the image. So it should be scaled correctly, I think. —Quibik (talk) 22:56, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

- The original barnstar is not vector, which is why I exported the final image as raster -- I thought having that mix of raster and vector would be weird. I think it is possible to embed the raster in the SVG, or we could use a vector barnstar if it's super important. Anyways, that was my thinking. If Connormah doesn't have any luck (Which I hope , I can do another, too, but not today. Also, all of the other barnstars listed at WP:Barnstars threecheersfornick (talk) 00:13, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

- I did one too, it's sized as raster like all the other barnstars (due to the size of the original barnstar they're all based on and traditional use) at about 110-120px which is sufficent for how barnstars are used... I thought the star should be hatching from the egg... — raeky (talk | edits) 18:49, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Doubt in Inkscape
If an SVG file is nomianlly, say for example, 1000px by 1000px. How can this be resized to say 300px by 300px using Inkscape? --JovianEye (talk) 03:55, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
- You mean, how it's typically done with fair-use image reduction? Go to File -> Document properties -> Page tab. Under Custom size, use your desired dimension (in this case 300px by 300px). Click OK. Then scale the selection to fit the document. I don't know of any shortcut, but maybe a graphist would know. Hope this helps. --ZooFari 04:14, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

(Note: The page this file is going on is currently at FAC, so the sooner the better, if possible.) – VisionHolder « talk » 02:55, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Text in inkscape
Article(s):
Request: Could someone explain how to use the text function in inkscape properly? Why when I look at files outside of inkscape is the text often replaced by black boxes like here, I've worked out a way to fix it before but that ends up changing the size of the text. I'm sure there must be a better way of doing it! Cheers Smartse (talk) 20:17, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion:
- I've never come across this problem in my own files, but I have seen this before in SVGs by others. I'm curious about the steps that are needed to make Inkscape behave like that (use <FlowRegion> instead of <text> tags for text)? Unfortunately, I don't have any help to offer in regard of this problem, I'm afraid. —Quibik (talk) 01:59, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Arrange the text how you want it to appear on Inkscape. Bare in mind that Wikimedia will not render most fancy fonts. Verdana is usually the default font, though Wikimedia won't render that either, but it might not be a problem how the software will interpret that. Then use Text -> Convert to text. If that doesn't solve the problem, let me know. --ZooFari 02:20, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- About the MediaWiki fonts available: Meta:SVG fonts is useful. —Quibik (talk) 18:58, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks the "Text -> Convert to text" has sorted that out. I still have a problem in that the text changes size when I upload it. I just uploaded File:Ozone_cycle.svg, when I opened it in firefox before uploading it was fine and the text fitted but now it doesn't! The font used in Inkscape is Sans. Anyone know why it does that? Thanks for your help. Smartse (talk) 21:10, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Sigh. I don't know a solution, but you could follow instructions here on obtaining a non-modifiable text version. --ZooFari 00:04, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know about Inkscape but the usual method of making sure all text is viewable (though not editable) by everyone is to convert it to outlines before exporting it. That way the fanciest cursive font can be read by anyone. Sorry if I'm teaching egg-sucking here. Fred the Oyster (talk) 01:11, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks that's sorted now although I can now see why I couldn't work out how to do it before! Something should really be done to fix this if possible. Smartse (talk) 00:36, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's inherent in the SVG format. In effect an SVG file is just an XML page, it contains nothing but text. Text that describes everything in the image. Unless one is using outlines then any text is rendered with either the fonts that exist on the viewer's computer, or if they don't have that particular font then the closest approximation. It works in a similar way to the way HTML pages are rendered in the browser. You can specify any font you like but if that font isn't on the viewers computer then all you will get is either a rough estimate or the black boxes you got. Incidentally, they mean that whatever font is being used to render that image, that character is missing from the font. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 00:52, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Request: Per Durova's opinion at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Keep Calm and Carry On, this image apparently needs around a tenth of a degree rotation anti-clockwise. Could someone possibly do this/provide a second opinion? J Milburn (talk) 19:07, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: Request taken by Mononomic.. Seems reasonable. I'll rotate the picture to the proper orientation and rewrite over the original file (we can always revert if necessary). Give me just a few minutes. Mononomic (talk) 19:53, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Heavens to Murgatroyd—it's worse than I had thought. This was apparently vectorized from a standard raster image, which means that many of the lines and curves are very much imperfect (zoom into the crown to see what I'm talking about). This is one of my favorite posters, and I'd be more than happy to work on it. I'll start my quest to rebuild it from a higher-quality image, straightened and all, so it can be something worthy of the Featured Picture name. Sound OK? Mononomic (talk) 20:27, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds stunning. Thanks very much. J Milburn (talk) 20:32, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've just been contacted by WebHamster to let me know (so I can respond here) that he has corrected the rotation on the text (and uploaded and replaced the original vector version). Apparently it's a bit of an optical illusion as it was only 0.036 degrees off true. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 14:09, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- While that's most surely an improvement, I have a source with a higher-resolution file that will eliminate, for example, the circle irregularities near the crown. I'll proceed to do this anyways. Mononomic (talk) 23:44, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

- Comment: I read that the letters in the original poster do not belong to any font type, that they were hand made by a graphic designer. If that is true it would be good to work from a raster picture of a original poster or at least to use it to check if those problems were also there. franklin 18:58, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've heard the same. I'm still trying to acquire that high-resolution image. If that falls through, I'll just have to trace it by hand from another image. Mononomic (talk) 03:21, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Done I've completed the vectorization, and have uploaded it to Commons as File:Keep Calm and Carry On Poster.svg. It should be significantly better, as I've retraced it from a variety of different images from scratch. It should be much straighter and much more accurate. Let me know what you think. Cheers! Mononomic (talk) 01:39, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks very much. Could you please head over to Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Keep Calm and Carry On and explain what you have done? I have added the image to the nomination. J Milburn (talk) 12:07, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Done and done. I personally think a new nomination would be best, especially because of the changes to the image itself during the nomination and the potential votes hinging on those changes, but that's just me. I'm watching that conversation and I'll be happy to answer/explain whatever you like there. Mononomic (talk) 15:12, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
