Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an upcoming action-adventure comedy film based on the video game franchise of the same name published by Sega, and the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), serving as the third installment in its film series. The film stars Ben Schwartz and James Marsden, reprising their roles as the titular character Sonic and Tom Wachowski, respectively. It is the third installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be produced by Sega Sammy Group, Original Film, Marza Animation Planet, and Blur Studio, and released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on December 20, 2024.

Cast

Voice cast

  • Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog: A heroic yet overconfident anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds.[3]
  • TBA as Shadow the Hedgehog: A anthropomorphic red-stripped black hedgehog, and the main result of Project Shadow. The character is expected to have a major role in the film after making a silent cameo appearance in the mid-credit scenes of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Live-action cast

Production

Development

In February 2022, Sega Sammy Group and Paramount Pictures had been in development of a third Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) film after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). The film was formally announced during ViacomCBS's investor event, featuring much of the crew from the previous films.[3] A series starring Knuckles the Echidna, who had appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, for Paramount+, was being developed simultaneously with the film.[3]

Casting

In April 2022, Jim Carrey–who portrays Dr. Robotnik in the films–announced that he was considering retiring from acting.[4] With his retirement, producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher confirmed that his role as Robotnik would not be recast in any sequels if he followed through with his retirement plans. However, they remained hopeful that they could develop a script good enough for him to continue the role.[5]

Release

Theatrical

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released theatrically in the United States by Paramount Pictures on December 20, 2024.[6]
