Dark Matter is an American science fiction television series created by Blake Crouch, based on his 2016 novel of the same name. It premiered on Apple TV+ on May 8, 2024, with two episodes.[1]
Premise
A physicist in Chicago is warped into an alternate version of his life, leaving him to fight to return to his life to prevent the alternate version of himself from harming his family.

Physics professor Jason Dessen lives with his wife Daniela and son Charlie in Chicago. When his friend Ryan wins the prestigious Pavia prize, Jason attends his celebration at a local bar. As he leaves to return home, he is abducted by a masked man who injects him with an unknown drug that renders him unconscious. When he awakes, Jason finds himself in a laboratory facility where he meets Amanda and Leighton who are delighted that he has "returned". Unsure about what is happening, Jason escapes the lab and returns to his home, where he encounters Amanda who says she lives there with him—the interior décor of the house is completely different, and there is no sign of Daniela and Charlie. Meanwhile, Jason's abductor is revealed to be a version of himself, who enters his house and seduces Daniela. | |||||

Jason.01 checks himself into a hospital where he learns that he is a world famous physicist who has been missing from the public for a year and that there is a mysterious drug in his system. Escaping, he manages to track down Daniela who is now a famous artist and tells him he approached her before his disappearance telling her he regretted ending their relationship years earlier and that she turned him down. Despite being concerned about Jason1's welfare, Daniela agrees to help him figure out what is going on. They realize the paths between Jasons diverged when Daniela became pregnant. Jason1 is captured by his research team; he agrees to work with them claiming he wants to remember his life's work. Jason1 studies Jason2's research and realizes he was able to send people into alternate dimensions. A sympathetic Amanda tries to help him escape via Jason2s box to alternate dimensions. Jason2 explains his newfound romantic side to Daniela by claiming to have had a near death experience. | |||||

Jason1 and Amanda end up in a world with the Blaire from Amanda's world who went missing long ago. She reveals that despite living in a near empty world she does not want to risk going back in the box as it is near impossible to return to her original world. Jason1 and Amanda end up in a world that is ridden by plague, in time to watch Daniela die, and a world where Jason and Daniela are divorced because of his violent actions. Amanda is heartbroken to realize that Jason2 knew how to control which world he entered and did not share that knowledge. Jason2 reveals to Daniela he quit his job and wants her to quit hers too. She begins to feel left out of their marriage. To appease Leighton's insatiable need for the box and multiple worlds Jason2 returns to his world where he learns Jason1 and Amanda are looking for him. | |||||

Jason2 not knowing about Charlie's nut allergy accidentally feeds him nuts. At the emergency room, Daniela notices needle marks on Jason2s arms and begins to become suspicious of him. She tracks him to his storage shelter and finds the ampoule he uses to travel between worlds and enlists Ryan's help in discovering what it is. Ryan believes that Jason is competing with him on the compound. Jason2 shows him how to travel between worlds but leaves him in an alternate Chicago after Ryan realizes he is not the Jason he knows. Jason1 continues to travel between worlds and begins to grow closer to Amanda. He struggles with his anger and jealousy towards different versions of himself who are able to be with Daniela. | |||||

Production
It was first announced in December 2020 that Apple TV+ had entered into development of a series adaptation of Blake Crouch's novel, with Crouch set to write and act as showrunner.[5] The series was officially greenlit in March 2022, with Apple ordering 9 episodes and Joel Edgerton cast to star. Louis Leterrier was set to direct the first four episodes.[6] By September 2022, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Oakes Fegley and Dayo Okeniyi joined the cast.[7][8][9] In December, Amanda Brugel would join the cast in a recurring role.[10]
Production began in Chicago on October 4, 2022, and Apple TV announced that the series would premiere on May 8, 2024.[11]
Reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an 81% approval rating with an average rating of 6.9/10, based on 53 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Dark Matter's intriguing ideas are spread a tad thin over its season-long runtime, but fans of foreboding sci-fi will find its residue addictively sticky."[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 63 out of 100 based on 21 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[13]
