Bellevue High School is a public secondary school located in Bellevue, Washington, USA. In the 2005-2006 school year, Bellevue had 1492 students enrolled in grades 9 through 12.

The school principal is now David Wellington, and the Assistant Principals are Dan Irvine and Keith Schacht. Their mascot is the wolverine.

Bellevue High School generally serves students in Bellevue School District's West Zone, which includes the towns of Medina, Yarrow Point, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point and Beaux Arts, and the neighborhoods of Enatai, Woodridge, Wilburton and Downtown Bellevue. However due to Bellevue School District's open enrollment policy, students from all over the district, and even outside of the district, attend Bellevue High as well.

Extracurricular activities

Athletics

Football

Bellevue's 20 varsity teams and 45 other teams provide a range of team and individual sports, but it is the football team that has put the school on the national map. Bellevue High's football team has played and beaten many notable and nationally ranked teams such as Long Beach Poly and others. On September 4, 2004 Bellevue's football team defeated first-ranked De La Salle of Concord, California, breaking their 13 year, 151-game winning streak. In 2004 Bellevue was ranked 2nd in the nation, and won their fourth consecutive state title, led by J.R. Hasty, E.J. Savannah, Steven Schilling, Connor Mawhinney,and Keith Rosenburg. They recently have won the 2006 3A State Championship led by Eric Block, Mick Connors, Will and Loka Kanongataa, Brendan Lopez, Daniel Harden and Travis Anderson. Making that their fifth state 3A title in six years[4], making it the school's fifth championship in six years under the coaching of Butch Goncharoff. [2]

Swim and Dive

Bellevue's Girls swim and dive team has also had notable success, and its 2006 3A Championship represents its fifth in six years, and sixth in eight years. [5]

Clubs

After school activities include ASB, debate, Film Club, the Tea and Poetry club, the Gentlemen's club, drama, DECA, Junior Statesmen, National Honor Society, Earth Save, FIRST Robotics, Gay-Straight Alliance, Key Club, Math Club, and club sports.

Bellevue's Varsity LD (Lincoln Douglas) debate squad has won the University of Puget Sound tournament, qualified and cleared at NFL Nationals, qualified to state (receiving a current total of 6 state bids, the most per capita of any squad in Washington) and placing two debaters in semifinals, qualified to the Tournament of Champions, and attended several round robins[citation needed]. It currently has two debaters ranked in the top 100 in the country and top 5 in the state[citation needed]. It is coached by Tammi Riggers, Kai Zhao (varsity coach), and Peter Van Elswyk (varsity coach). Three of its new Open level debaters placed highly as Junior Varsity debaters[citation needed].

Other Activities: Bellevue High was the 2006 knowledge bowl 3A State Champion[citation needed]. The yearbook, The Beacon, won a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association[citation needed].

Demographics

In the 2005-2006 school year, the total student population was 1492[citation needed]. The racial demographics are: 3% African American, 25% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% Hispanic, 4% Multiracial and 65% White. 21% of students have another first language besides English, and 11% qualify for free or reduced lunches[citation needed].

There is a complete music department with performance and theory classes available to students.

Bellevue High has a long history of quality music ensembles. BHS ensembles have performed at a wide variety of venues and in numerous competitions and festivals. The high school has hosted the competitive Bellevue Jazz Festival every May since 1982.

Vocational programs

Automotive Technology; Business and Office Education, Culinary Arts; Hotel, Travel & Tourism; Computer Technology; Programming & Graphics; Media Tech; Radio & TV.

Bellevue High's Video Production program is one of the best in the district and in the state[citation needed], with several award winning filmmakers competing in local and national festivals[citation needed]. The programs offers students an opportunity to gain experience in the competitive field of video and film production by teaching students the basics of professional video production, and giving them access to fully professional filming, lighting, and miking equipment, as well as professional editing, titling, and DVD authoring software.
