April Fool's Day DYK

Hi, Royalbroil. You seemed very involved in evaluating candidates for the April 1st DYK section--and I saw some funny ideas being tossed around. I had a look at the main page, none of the current DYK's look terribly odd/funny/unusual. Am I missing the joke, is the update delayed, or did someone decide not to be funny this year? —Preceding unsigned comment added by The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talkcontribs)

My WiFi internet connection has been almost constantly down because of rain. I bet that the first group had not cycled in yet. I am surprised that the group included exclusively April Fool's Day hooks instead of spreading them out over the day. I should have been notified about the Alien abduction insurance article that I started. Royalbroil 03:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well at least they're up now. Nicely done (the JFK line is my favorite)!--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 03:29, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - and thanks for all of your hard work on this. My guess is that I can find more odd things on the NRHP for next year's April Fools, and the West Rim Trail was an idea I sat on for almost a year (thought of it April 1 last year). I enjoyed your alien abduction insurance hook a lot. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:10, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent idea for next year. Thanks for the recognition and I'm glad that you enjoyed the hook! Royalbroil 14:15, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will get a review up for it this week. I have been having to deal with some family issues lately. Hope you understand and sorry for me holding it off.

--Tlayden (talk) 18:42, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I caused any problems for you with the review. I was new to Wikipedia at the time and had no clue that there was a process involved for review. I looked at a few articles to review and it caught my attention, so along on other reviews I just COMMENTED on it. While I agree that the person who calls it should get it (the article), experience on Wikipedia is not a major factor in being able to review something for that matter....Have Zenlax review the article.

Yes I am very interested in North Wilkesboro Speedway, in fact I am the web designer for the company Save The Speedway that is documenting all the history at the track and is placing the historical marker for the track in May. To answer your question on if the track is accessible, Yes it is. If there is a way I can contact you my private email I could give you more information. Also in our collection of photos and images Save The Speedway has more the 1000 photos and images, as well as video and program covers that have been given to us with expressed permission to use. I will try and get some of the photos together and put them on the page for other to see. Feel free to contact me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Swilson2000 (talkcontribs) 18:59, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response - I just thought I'd offer it up, in case you were planning to get a third round in. I thought the fact was more bizarre than funny, but there are plenty of straight facts of interest. I may well nominate it for the ordinary front page. Warofdreams talk_

I saw that. That's a good idea, they don't seem very important. I'd read through the article to improve it, but I want the article to be stable. I hope that I'm interpreting the stability criteria right. Royalbroil 19:40, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

April Fools' Main Page

Hi, I noticed you are archiving some of this year's discussion. Thanks for that! Do you think you might be able to also create archived versions of the AFMP? I think someone did so for last year but this years is now gone, near as I can tell. Unless I was looking in the wrong place. I'm thinking that since this is now a 3 year old tradition, an archive structure that didn't just use the standard archive box might be better ... some sort of embedded template that all the talk pages carry that shows, by year, the main page, the main page talk, the DYK talk pate, the FA talk page, etc. It might be a bit much to do but might also avoid some rediscovery/reinvention each year. I noticed this because my blog link to yesterday's main page is already stale and I was trying to find what to link to... what do you think? ++Lar: t/c 18:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I'll look into it. I did some archiving last year, so I did the same thing this year. So 2008 was the third year (2006, 2007, 2008). I didn't know that. I made a checklist for myself below, feel free to expand. Royalbroil 19:51, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
K! Did. Thx. ++Lar: t/c 21:55, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To Do

  • Fix the links so that someone can easily navigate between the each year's various (2007, etc.) talk pages (links are currently wrong)
    • Really fancy: make it a nav box so you can embed it in many places and nav from 2006 DYK to 2007 DYK to 2008 FA in one click.

 Done

  • Make an archive box template specific for April Fool's Day that links all of the archives
    • Really fancy, takes into account that there is a tree structure to the pages where DYK and FA are sub pages of the overall page...

 Done

  • Create static versions of the 2 main pages from 2006, 2007, 2008 (both) (if not already done) and include link to them in the archive box.
    • 2 main pages? you mean having statics for how the DYK changed (I know in 2008 there was at least one change in the DYK articles, maybe more, and seeing all of them is goodness, if doable)

Done (poorly worded on my part)

  • Research 2005. SOMETHING was done on the main page more than just out and out vandalism, but I forget what, and the structure there may make it hard to find.

 Done

  • regularize the names and locations (subpages) of things where they deviate a bit)

 Done

  • pat self on back for a good job :)

 Done  Done  Done

Kulwicki GA

Well done. Regarding FA, you'll have gathered that you'll need a copyediting specialist to look over it. Try the WP:PRV page for volunteers (not me though, I'm too close to the topic, and obviously not yet up to Tony1's high standards!). Regarding refs, I think you'll have some work to do. Especially now that Ealdgyth tends to check all weblinks and question whether they're reliable. The major websites (NASCAR.com NYT etc) are all fine, obviously. There are some that are reproductions of good sources, but by sites that we don't know are reliable in themselves (I'm thinking of ones like 2, 4, 14, 23 (duplicate of 2?)). That means that strictly they don't count as reliable sources. There are also some broken links (already!) Nos. 11, 17, 18, 19. You may be able to find a cached copy or look on the Internet Archive. The underbird.com site looks like a fan site, which is tricky because it's self-published. You might perhaps argue that in this particular case, it's appropriate. You may also be asked whether sites like Ultimate racing results, Racing reference info and Laidback racing.com are reliable, so have your answer ready! Sorry to bring more work! 4u1e (talk) 18:07, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redlinks: You tend not to see many. A few redlinks shouldn't really be a barrier to GA or even FA (I don't think it's in the criteria for either), provided that they're to things that really should have an article on Wikipedia (meeting notability criteria and all that stuff). If there are loads I think it would put reviewers off. 4u1e (talk) 06:51, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question

Since you are now and administrator (Congrats on the Kulwicki GA. I assisted you courtesy of the Hooters magazine article on the 25th annivesery of the company earlier this year), I have a quick question. If you click on the Luis Palau article, you will see two pictures. The second one is the one I am interested in since I took it and uploaded it last September. An anonyous user from Australia is claiming I have a possible copyright violation because I took the picture from the Jumbotron used at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers. I have explained that I was not able to get close enough to Palau to take the picture so taking it on the Jumbotron was the next best option. How can a free use image be classified as a copyright violation? I don't get it. Chris (talk) 20:52, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did what you said. I hate that because I thought it was a good picture to where I could present the picture. Oh well. Try again when he shows up in Conyers on Labor Day weekend again. This time I will make certain to get a better shot if possible minus the Jumbotron. Chris (talk) 03:04, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also did it to another picture I took: Natalie Grant which I took at the same location in September. Chris (talk) 19:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kulwicki GA

Congratulations on the article becoming recognized as Good. I know you put a lot of work into that. I just looked at it, and there are parts I don't recognize, so you put even more hard work into it! And I didn't realize you'd become an admin, so congrats on that too!. -Freekee (talk) 02:21, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: next dyk

Thanks! I was hoping someone would comment on that one eventually, since it's the only hook for the 31st of march and 1st of april that still had a decent picture, but I didn't want to put something I wrote myself on the page without someone at least commenting on it. Now I can finish the update with a peace of mind. - Bobet 00:31, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. And thanks for uploading the image for me. - Bobet 00:48, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Woodlands Resort (A7)

Dear Royalbroil,

Just wondering why The Woodlands Resort information was deleted based on A7 when many other hotel and resorts appear on Wikipedia?

The Woodlands,Texas wikipedia page has a link to The Woodlands Resort wikipedia page but no information appears on the resort. I'm trying to correct that by contributing information but it was deleted.

Your insight is appreciated. Bkaplan (talk) 16:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK writeup

Thanks, Royal; I added that over on WP:FCDW so we can schedule it in, still unsure what we're doing on the 14th. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:32, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aiming for May 5 for the Dispatch, unless something comes up (like the 2000th promotion :-) Please tune in to the talk page at WP:FCDW for discussion about whether the 5th will work out for you. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:22, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My advice to you would be to get a second opinion on the article's status for it becoming a Feature article. I would give opinions on it, but I am terribly busy and don't have time to give you the correct standards for the article being qualified for Feature article. Zenlax T C S 20:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I was hoping that you would do it while you were reviewing against GA. I have run the article past numerous people. I just need an English wordsmith expert to review the prose. Royalbroil 02:38, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re: The Woodlands Resort

RoyalBroil,

Thanks for the feedback.

Now that the page has been deleted, what is the next step? Do I just start over add more information about the resort (and what makes it notable with references)?

Your help is appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bkaplan (talkcontribs) 20:56, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UCLA digital library program images

Roybalbroil

Sorry to see that the LA Times images were deleted and my apologies for completely disappearing from the discussion at the end of Feb. I went out on medical leave and returned to work this week.

To fill in the gaps, LA Times transferred the copyrights to UCLA; for negatives the university physically has in its possession. I was hoping that our legal counsel could work out a way with Wikipedia policies to keep the images up. I believe UCLA counsel and others in the UC system are continuing to research ways to contribute material to Wikipedia.

My Thanks to you, Anderson and Evrik for the help and discussion.

dbopm : "I Love You Truly"

Royalbroil, thanks for your correction. Not being a regular contributor, I'm struggling to learn the rules here. (For example, WP:DEADLINK was new to me.) I'm concerned that "bad" links to my database will create a bad impression among those who don't realise that it's not my fault. Dbopm (talk) 20:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

Thanks very much RB, I appreciate your comments. I am still interested in becoming an admin, mainly to help out with DYK, but after my last (withdrawn) RFA I decided I wanted more time to get some runs on the board. Basically I decided not to nominate again until I had at least 2 years as a registered user and 12k edits. I passed the 2 year milestone a day or two ago and I will probably exceed 12k around the end of this month. If you are still interested in nominating me then, I will probably be willing to accept at that time.

No "skeletons in the closet" that I am aware of - at least, not on the project :) Gatoclass (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Let's talk on around May 10 when the self-imposed time limit is up so Bencherlite and I can prepare our co-nominations.
That sounds fine to me :) Thanks once again for the support. Gatoclass (talk) 16:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Otto Zobel

I am thrilled that is going in to DYK so soon. The lead could do with ". . . in radio and cable transmissions." added to the end for clarity. I am not sure what you want with the request for in-line citation. The most relevant paper is the Carson and Zobel 1923 treatment which is already in there at reference 31. Thanks. SpinningSpark 07:04, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Royalbroil, I'm slowly working on the above linked article, and I was wondering if you minded if I uploaded a cropped version of this photo to Commons. I would of course link to the Flickr page and give credit where it is deserved ;-) Just wanted to ask before I went ahead and uploaded it, cheers! « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) 02:26, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it, of course. Make sure that you grab the original size image of the image from flickr by clicking on the "All Sizes" button and then select "original". Please add it to Commons category Category:Files by User:Royalbroil from en.wikipedia. Royalbroil 03:23, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jocko Maggiacomo

I'm fairly confident that Jocko, Jr. was the Trans Am champion. If the 1947 birthdate is correct (which is the one listed on racing-reference, that would make Jocko 28 years old in 1976, a very reasonable age. This would also place that championship 1 year before that man's NASCAR debut, also a reasonable assumption. In addition, in the mid-late 80's, most of Maggiacomo's NASCAR starts were at road courses, indicating that he was some sort of "road course ringer". Finally, the AMC Javelin that Maggiacomo drove to the '76 Trans Am Cat 1 championship would have been very similar to the cars used in NASCAR at the time. Finally, this ebay auction of his memorabilia also indicates that Trans Am and NASCAR Jocko Maggiacomo are one in the same. -Drdisque (talk) 04:07, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

Hi Royalbroil, I'd like another opinion on this situation. Pastordavid had previously redirected the page to Skillet (band) a week ago, although it isn't a redirect at the moment. I fully respect what he did, although all of the other members should be redirected, too, to be consistent. The notability guideline for music seems pretty clear that the Skillet member articles wouldn't be notable enough. But do you think that at least the John Cooper article could stay around if I worked on improving it? Thanks for your input. --JamieS93 19:46, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I request that you have a look at this article, which is being proposed for deletion and claimed to be totally inaccurate. I am a bit rattled over the possibility that the article I've worked upon and has been displayed on the main page, is inaccurate and biased. Your opinion would be of great value, both for the article and from the standpoint of if/what care I need to take in the future work I do. Thanks, Vishnava (talk) 13:27, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Wadham's?

I just wrote an article, and was wondering if it were DYK-worthy. Any thoughts? Wadham's Oil and Grease Company of Milwaukee -Freekee (talk) 05:15, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I responded there. By the way, if you ever need any photos of the Ozaukee or Milwaukee area, let me know. I know you take a lot yourself, but I don't know how often you come through here. -Freekee (talk) 04:50, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I don't think that area has public access. I'll keep it in mind, though. And yeah, I remember the speedway. I never saw a race, but you could hear them for miles around. Of course, that's the main reason they stopped having them. I noticed in the Kulwicki article, that he raced there. I hadn't been aware of that. Speaking of him, I was wondering where his grave is, in St. Adalbert's. Can you tell me roughly what section it's in, or how to get there? -Freekee (talk) 02:42, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1. How do the reviews work? How does one go about rating something? Do they have to be of certain credibility or is it administration only? 2. Easter Parade

RB, do we have a page for holding over links for Easter? It's just that someone submitted an article called Easter Parade a few days ago, I'm happy to run it now but if there's a precedent for holding topical DYKs over for a more appropriate time, we could run it next Easter instead. Gatoclass (talk) 12:53, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe holding articles for a year is a little over the top anyhow. What the heck, I'll run the article now, last Easter wasn't long ago anyway. Gatoclass (talk) 12:59, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think Lou probably planned to feature it at Easter, but it took him longer to write than he thought. Anyhow, it's a good article and I found it pretty interesting, so it certainly deserves the DYK. Thanks for your input. Gatoclass (talk) 13:10, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Royalbroil - I request you to have a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mecca Time - I had created this article early today thinking it was significant, but later I found that only a BBC report and a Gulf Times article are the sources of this information - all other sources have picked the BBC article, nothing else. The participants in this conference in question are virtually unknown, and I couldn't find any background information on this idea or controversy. I had a discussion with Erechtheus, who had first raised the point, and Johnbod, whose feedback I had requested. Yet, I feel the best thing to do is to get wider community opinion, and your input will be appreciated. Thanks, Vishnava (talk) 14:32, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I felt it was the thing to do. Given the opinions of Erechtheus and Johnbod, its possible that I made a mistake, in which case the article has no business being here. Nobody knows who these people are and they can propose just about anything, as I realize in retrospect. Its just that the news was carried by the BBC and was interesting, in context of the current Islam-related happenings, even though the idea was ridiculous. NASCAR drivers images

Hi! Thanks for your input. I'm in the process of uploading the images to Commons. When I'm finished uploading them, should I delete the ones I uploaded to the English Wikipedia, and if so, how to do it??

Thanks, Nascar fan mx (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 04:11, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

April 28 Dispatch

Hey, Royalbroil. There was talk page consensus to give the 28th to Featured lists, but they have had to back out. Are you able to tune up User:Royalbroil/DYK overview for the 28th deadline? Please let me know ASAP, so I can get a Plan B in case you can't. I usually need time for Tony1 to run through pre-publication. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:47, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Royal, I'll go in later tonight and add some things from the point of view of someone who had no idea how DYK worked; if I mess anything up or add any tortured prose, please feel free to revert, change, delete as needed. My prose stinks, but my intent will be to add in things that the uninitiated aren't aware of. Can you add some basic stats somewhere? How many submissions, how many DYKs there have been, any sort of numbers you have access to? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:55, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Royal, you realize that vandal has put up two unblock requests even though s/he isn't blocked? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:42, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I bet that they are blocked. The unblock description describes that they are probably in an autoblock if there's no entry in their block log. I gotta go to sleep, it's the middle of the night here. Thanks for reverting the vandal blanking on my user page, Sandy! I saw it almost immediately and tried to revert, but you already beat me. I semi-protected it for a while. Royalbroil 06:50, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you read Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Philippines Hot 100‎ for the truthfulness of the chart that it charted at. --Howard the Duck 04:55, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kulwicki refs

Two possible approaches, I reckon.

  1. This is one of the times that a little original research seems in order to me. Are there any primary sources (photos, I guess) you can use to confirm one or the other version? High quality sources do make mistakes sometimes: I have a book that I can use to reference the fact that famous Brazilian Nelson Piquet is Argentinian, if I want!
  2. If you're not comfortable with that, or if you have no way of checking, then give both versions and attribute them to their sources. That way you're not interpreting.

What do you think? 4u1e (talk) 13:56, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

For the DYK notice and the mention in The Signpost! I was wondering if you did or could let the photograph's creator know it was featured on the Main Page, he's new to Wiki and I got him to go out of his way to take that photo, I am sure he would appreciate knowing it was selected. I would tell him but I think it would mean more coming from the folks who regular at DYK. IvoShandor (talk) 17:14, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad to be back, I don't think I will be as prolific as before but I will be around. Thanks for dropping that notice on Brooooce's page. I am also glad to see his photo featured on the Main Page, it's really the only reason I nominated the article and I think the more we recognize quality content from the newest Wikipedians the more likely they are to feel welcome and keep coming back. Thanks for helping out with that Royal.IvoShandor (talk) 18:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you like the photograph, and thanks for adding it to DYK, it really made my morning to see it posted on the main page. Broooooooce (talk) 19:50, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proofreading hooks in the Signpost article

If the hooks attributed to BInguyen, Piotrus and Cirt appeared today, I would remove the space after each ellipsis, end each hook with a question mark, and correct [[rowing|single sculls]], which links to a disambiguation page. Since they didn't appear today, perhaps you printed them that way in the interest of an exact quote. But I have given almost every hook in the last 20 months or so a spaceless ellipsis and a question mark. Art LaPella (talk) 03:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

checkY Done Those are all good points. Those quotes were all added by my co-author. Thanks for the review! Royalbroil 03:12, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, Royal, you should get Art LaPella to realize, then, that the mainpage is out of compliance with MoS, specifically WP:MOS#Ellipses.  :-) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:15, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

Updated DYK query On 29 April, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article St. James' Episcopal Church, Manitowoc, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Very neat to see it on the Main Page. Thank you for the nomination. -- AltioraPeto (talk) 03:21, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
