Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版: 破, Evangerion Shin Gekijōban: Ha, lit. "Evangerion New Theater Edition: Breaking Up") is a 2009 Japanese animated film written and chief directed by Hideaki Anno. It is the second of four films released in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy based on the original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. It is being produced and co-distributed by Hideaki Anno's Studio Khara.

The release date was pushed back several times from the original announcement of January 2008:[1] first, to a December 2008 release[2] before an update on the official website on October 6th, 2008 announced the official English title and a "early summer 2009" release date.[3] A final postponement revealed that the film will be released on June 27, 2009.[4]

Production

In September 2006, it was confirmed the second film would be produced as part of the Rebuild of Evangelion series. It was also revealed the film would originally seek a January 2008 release, and consist of a 90 minute running time.[1] In November 2006, the December edition of the Japanese anime magazine Newtype confirmed the second film was written during post-production on the first film. Anno stated the introduction of new characters would begin from the second film onwards.[5] The release date was later set to a December 2008 release[2] before an update on the official website on October 6th, 2008 announced the official English title and a summer 2009 release date.[3] The film will be released on June 27, 2009.[4]

Like the previous film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance will feature newly animated sequences, redesigned EVA units, inclusion of EVA-04 unit and a previously unanimated female character.[6] Little conclusive information has been made public regarding the brunette in glasses who made an appearance in the trailer. However the marketers have given one small piece of information in the newly released Nintendo DS game, Petit Eva: Evangelion@Game (ぷちえう゛ぁ~EVANGELION@GAME~, Puchi Eva ~Evangelion@Game~). In the super-deformed Evangelion game, the player collects prizes by passing levels. The final prize in the game received from the last level is a character picture of a brunette girl with red-framed glasses named Mari (マリ). The description for the item simply reads "Mysterious girl."[7]

Marketing

Two trailers for the film have been released. The teaser trailer was shown after the end credits of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone in the style of the "next episode" previews in the original television series (complete with narration by Misato's seiyū Kotono Mitsuishi and the frequent sign-off phrase promising "and of course, more fanservice!"). A longer trailer was released on April 2, 2009.[8]

Among the information released in theatrical posters is that the character Asuka has had her family name changed from Sohryu to Shikinami, continuing the Japanese maritime vessel naming convention.[9]

Character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto designed three Be@rbrick toys for Asuka, Rei, and a mystery character went on sale on March 14, 2009. The toys were also released available in a bundle with advance film ticket purchases.[4]
