City of ruins
1. The mont blanc contained TNT, Wet Piric Acid, Dry Piric Acid, Guncotton, and Benzol
2. It flew no flags showing it’s cargo, to avoid a German attack.
3. It went to Halifax to join a convoy.
4. Imo was a Belgian relief ship, was heading to new York to collect emergency supplies.
5. A tugboat went into the wrong lane to avoid the Stella maris, and resulted with Imo and the mont blanc facing each other in the narrows. The mont blanc blew its whistle telling imo to move to the right. The imo blew its whistle twice to say I’m staying where I am. The two boats tried some last ditch efforts, but it was too late. The Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont Blanc, missed the TNT but ignited the Benzol and disturbed the highly volatile piric acid.
6. The mont blanc’s crew abandoned ship and knew that the ship was going to blow. The crew spoke no English, and no one could understand their warning yells and screams as they rowed furiously towards the Dartmouth shore.
7. A stream of grey smoke arose from the ship, and a crowd gathered to watch the spectacular fire. Firemen came to the scene as the mont blanc drifted towards the shore. The boat exploded with a force greater than any other manmade explosion before it. The anchor was found 4 kilometers away and a gun barrel was found almost 5 kilometers away. The explosion sent a cloud billowing 20, 000 feet above the city. About anything in a 2 kilometer radius was obliterated, 1500 peopled died initially, and Hundreds more died in the minutes and hours to come.
8. Seconds after the explosion the dazed survivors were washed up by a large tsunami triggered by the explosion. The tsunami was 18 feet higher then Halifax’s high water mark. The tsunami lifted Imo to the shore.
