Danyl Johnson

Danyl Aaron Johnson (born 17 July 1981[1]) is a English singer from Arborfield, near Reading, England who is currently a finalist on the sixth series of the ITV show The X Factor. Johnson works as a dance and drama teacher, having taught at three stage schools, including the Southcote-based renowned stage school Starmaker and School of the Arts (SOTA) in Windsor.

Early life and career

Johnson was previously a member of two boy bands, Upfrunt, a duo with band mate Steven Blackie, and StreetLevel, with band members Adam Harris, Dean Brindley and Steven Blackie. StreetLevel disbanded when Johnson left in 2006 to audition for The X Factor's third series, but he failed to make it past the early stages and did not get to audition for the judges.[2] Johnson is also member of the band Empty Spaces, but he was forced to put the project on hold because his bandmate Nick Burrage did not want to be involved in The X Factor.

The X Factor

Johnson auditioned in London singing Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends". All four judges gave a standing ovation after Johnson's performance. He received rave reviews from the judges and received four yes votes and was put through to boot-camp.[3] Johnson appeared on NBC's The Today Show on 27 August 2009.[4]

On 5 September 2009, it was reported that Johnson had been prohibited from appearing on American TV. He was not allowed to accept an invite on The Oprah Winfrey Show in case it proves advantageous for him in the talent show. X Factor producers and ITV reckoned it would be unfair on the other acts as they are only supposed to be judged on what they do on the show.[5]

At boot-camp, Johnson sang "Holding Back the Years" by Simply Red. Johnson was put through to the final 24 contestants in the Over-25's.[6] Johnson travelled to Los Angeles with his mentor Simon Cowell, and decided to put Johnson through to the final 12 despite being disappointed with his performance.

In the first live show, Johnson sang And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going from the film Dreamgirls.[7] The performance however caused a row between the judges. Louis Walsh commented that Johnson had not got the likeablity factor, but he has the talent factor. Dannii said: “It was a fantastic performance, a true X-Factor performance – turning guys into girls.” She then added: “No need to change the gender references, if we’re to believe everything we read in the press.”[7] This elicited an angry response from Simon who fumed: “I think we’re missing something here. I just heard one of the best performances I ever heard in my life,[7] causing a long standing ovation from the audience. Johnson made it through to the second live show, diva week.

In the second live show, Johnson sang an unheard composion called "I Didn't Know My Own Strength", from Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" album. Dannii Minogue said "Your first audition, we were like oh my god has he peaked, I have to say that was flawless". Cheryl Cole said "Talk about challenge, to sing a song that isn’t known – you were great". Simon Cowell said "Once again an incredible performance, the lyrics said it all, I didn’t crumble, I didn’t know my own strength". Johnson made it through to the third live show, Big Band night.[8][9]

In the third live show, Johnson sang Feeling Good. Despite getting praise from his performance, Johnson found himself in the bottom two along with Miss Frank. In the sing-off, he sang Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends", the song he had sung in his audition. Louis Walsh opted to send Johnson home as he was to save his act Miss Frank. Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue opted to save Johnson, leaving Cheryl Cole with the final decision. Cole decided to save Miss Frank so the decision would be split. It meant that the act with the lowest public vote, Miss Frank, were sent home.[10]

In the fourth live show, rock week, Johnson sang Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing". Reporters have been describing Johnson during the performance as "destroyed", due to a confidence knock. While judges Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh tried to boost his self-esteem, Cheryl Cole knocked him back down again when she told him 'You just don't do it for me'. After consistently good performances during the auditions and previous live shows, Johnson's vocals were noticeably below par as he sang the rock classic. Johnson recieved the highest number of votes on the night and made it through to the fifth live show, movie songs.[11]

In the fifth live show, movie songs, Johnson sang "Purple Rain" by Prince, from the film Purple Rain. Louis Walsh said "Danyl, very few people can sing a Prince song and do it justice, but tonight you came out there and absolutely won everybody over. It's hard to sing Prince and you deserve to be in the competition. You're a talented guy and if we're judging on vocal ability, you've got it all. I think you're going to be in the final." Dannii Minogue said "Danyl, I love the new look. It's a much, much better look. That was a really, really good performance. I loved the bit when you went into falsetto at the end... I don't love it when you scream too much at the end. Your voice is very, very good, but you need to really, really use it. Don't scream too much - it doesn't do you justice." Cheryl Cole said "I really like your demeanour tonight. You've lost the cocky attitude you had at the beginning but you're not the broken man we saw last week. You're somewhere in between - it's nice. I like the hair, I love the hair!" Simon Cowell, his mentor, said "I know I'm repeating myself, but I've got to say this again because it's important to remember the context of the real world. That was an outstanding vocal, it was. I really, really mean this. I think this show has found a great, great singer who was almost broken, who has now got his confidence back up, and we should be proud of you, we should be supporting you, because I think you could go on to have a great career. I'm very proud of you, Danyl, well done." Johnson made it to week 6, songs by Queen.[12]

In the sixth live show, Johnson sang "We Are the Champions" by Queen (band). Dannii Minogue said "I absolutely think was your best performance in the live shows." Louis Walsh said "There’s nothing wrong with being arrogant and confident – if you’ve got the talent to back it up. Tonight you proved that you’ve got it all. That was the best performance of the night." Cheryl Cole said "I wasn’t sure when you started off, but you won me over by the end. And I like your hair like that." Simon Cowell said "I thought that was absolutely fantastic. That was not a karaoke performance. You sang as if you meant it. You acted out the performance. Outstanding." Johnson made it through to the next round of the show, songs by Wham! and George Michael.[12]

In the seventh live show, songs by Wham! and George Michael, Johnson sang "Careless Whisper" by George Michael. There was some controversy earlier in the week when Johnson walked out of rehearsals and threatened to quit after he was given the George Michael song "Praying For Time" to perform on this Saturday’s show.[13][14] He was, however, given a stern telling off from his mentor, Cowell about his attitude.[13][15][16] Dannii Minogue said "Danyl, that is one of my all time favourite songs, a classic. I think Simon did the right thing by choosing a really original version of that for you - it was a wise move and you sang it perfectly." Louis Walsh said "Danyl, there's no doubt you can sing anything, but I think you tried too hard tonight. I would have preferred a different arrangement. You're a great singer but I think you're trying too hard and I think Simon is making it very difficult for you." Cheryl Cole said "I've got to be really honest with you, Danyl. Parts of that were really flat. The start was exposed because the track is so bare. But I think your image and performance are always fantastic." Simon Cowell said "Well, Cheryl, I think we were listening to two different songs there, I genuinely do. Because why that was so good, in my opinion, was that that is what is called respecting the song. Taking it, listening to it, and most importantly doing something original with it. No doubt Louis would have had you up in the scaffolding in a T-shirt. How can you say I tried too hard? By the way, to clear something up Danyl, you are 100% right to have chosen that song. It was your decision and it was the right decision." Reports have been saying that judges are reportedly on the verge of kicking Johnson off the show, after he stormed off set earlier in the week.[17]
