== Actually, I was surprised and a bit glad I was mentioned in the New York Times article. ==

I caused a wide debate in regards to censorship. And news flash, kid, I've always been an ass. Thanks for your sarcastic comments.[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:97.106.45.230&diff=299249162&oldid=297593278]

WP:Piracy

Hi Deflagro, thanks for the welcome! Don't worry, there will be no violation of WP:OR, I just aim to use the resources I have (journal articles, books etc) to edit in the modern section. My work can't be used unless it gets published, which won't be for a while even if it does happen! I've tried to stay away from editing on piracy here on wiki because it will distract even more from what I am supposed to be doing, so although I have given in, I'm not sure how active I'll be either. I should be around and about sometimes though, so I thought I'd fly the flag!

What salting means

It's a term we Wikipedians have for protecting pages that have been repeatedly recreated after being deleted. It's like salting the earth--so that's why we sometimes say "delete and salt." Blueboy96 01:26, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've posted some ideas, and a link to a sample I had a shot at, for adapting the layout of the List of pirates page.. basically it puts it inside a table and includes a short comment about the pirate. I'd welcome your opinions on this, as you seem to be the only active person I've seen around these parts : )

shas (talk) 12:16, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replied here:

I looked at your sandbox. It looks like a great idea. The only thing I would say is take out the reference part because not all are cited. I'm pretty much the only active user. Pirate Dan pops in on occassion. I think he started the WikiProject. So you might want to leave him a message too. If you want I will start working on it in my (or your) sandbox. Deflagro C/T 17:22, 13 January 2008 (UTC) [reply]

I'd appreciate any and all help you can give! Looking at the List of pirates there's an awful lot of pirates there to add to the table, which is why I was wary of just creating the page without discussion. Reason I've kept the References field was that I was planning on taking a source that had information about the pirate and was used in the article, then putting it in there, sort of as a way of confirming that pirate's notability (I'm more than a little paranoid about notability, after some bad experiences when I started up here). If you feel this would be unnecessary duplication then okay, we can take it out.
seems a shame that the Pirates project here is unpopulated.. would have thought - particularly with the resurgence

of pirates in popular culture - that it would be busy here. Oh well. shas (talk) 17:30, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replied here:
Yeah. Most people when they see it think they will be active, join, and then never do anything. Some people do pop in then an now. Neil A was very active in the WP a while back. He's an Admin so he's still around, but he raised Edward Low to FA status. The reason I mentioned taking out the reference thing is not because of duplication of them, but instead because if you look, not all the articles have references (most are stubs). So it would sort of be drawing attention to them. Where would you like me to work on it. Your sandbox or mine? Thanks! Deflagro C/T 17:49, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Either works really - yours would probably be better as it's probably possible to get to, rather than mine - my userspace is basically a few hidden pages which I remember, and a redirect to my talk : P If you create the page, I'll copy over everything I've done already and I guess we can go from there. shas (talk) 17:53, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also - I'll take out the references column over on my sandbox right now although in the future adding refs is probably something we should focus on doing. shas (talk) 17:54, 13 January 2008 (UTC) (sorry for two messages, clicked save and remembered I had more to say)[reply]
Replied here:
Okay. Is there a way that we could save it as a template so it would be easier to edit? Deflagro C/T 17:55, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I really have no idea, but it's something I'll go and take a look into - perhaps see how other lists have been done (although I nicked the current format from something odd like list of actors with epilepsy, heh. My thinking is perhaps that a template wouldn't be appropriate as this is really only going to appear on one page. shas (talk) 17:57, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied here:
I think it would be usefull using this in also Women in Piracy. But yeah I see what you mean. Only thing I was saying was it would be easier to edit. But that's okay. Deflagro C/T 18:00, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Women in piracy at the moment is a little odd as it's not really a list - which is why I changed the template the other day from List of female pirates to women in piracy (as the template didn't really reflect what the article was about). If future plans are to create a list of just historical female pirates, then yeah the same format would probably be a good thing to apply. shas (talk) 18:03, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied here:
Okay I started doing some work in my sandbox but I ran into a few problems. According to a tag in the article, the names are supposed to be in alphabetical order. Their not. I think it makes more sense to have them in my date of birth, but as of right now they are in no order what so ever. Thoughts? Deflagro C/T 18:32, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. I wonder if there's any way of making a list orderable by either date of birth or surname..? I think at present it might be worth sticking to however they're ordered in the article right now although if - as it would appear to have been in the case of ancient pirates - there was no preexisting order then we're still back where we started (I used data from the golden age of piracy simply because it's the stuff I am at least somewhat familiar with, and was the most "complete" of all the sections).

Another thought I had was that would it be possible to have a basic overview of the particular era of piracy and pirates covered in each section before the list? For example, we'd have a quick summary of where, when, why and reasons for the end of that particular era, before the start of each list? Just an idea to flesh out the list and move it away from being a simple directory of information.
Just throwing out thoughts there though, so feel free to shoot them down. Do you have any objections if I jump in on your sandbox and do some work? Or would you rather I work on Golden Age in my sandbox then when I'm done copy the whole lot in at once to avoid any edit conflicts? shas (talk) 18:39, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied here:
Feel free to work in my sandbox. I ordered the Ancient Piracy into by alphabetical order. Since it is broken into segments by time period, I think order would be best. I think what we should be able to do is put them all into a spreadsheet and then order them from there.
I might pop in and out every now and then to work on it. If you want you can work on Golden Age of Piracy in my Sandbox while I work from the beginning. Deflagro C/T 18:44, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I've finished the Golden Age of Piracy list of pirates and I've put the completed thing into your sandbox. If you'd rather I don't do that in future (paste things into your sandbox) drop me a note ; ) shas (talk) 14:09, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replied here: That's fine. I don't care what you do in my sandbox as long as you have permission first (i.e. don't put random stuff in there. If we are working on somethin, or I said you could work on somethin in there, then feel free!). I've been at school today so I haven't had much time. I will work on finishin up some other parts. Looks good though! Deflagro C/T 22:29, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've started updating the List of pirates article as I've been losing momentum recently. I've finished the Medieval pirates list and done about half of the Buccaneers list. Just keeping you up to speed. shasYarr!/T|C 22:56, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replied here:

Insert What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar here

I had been planning on giving this to you when we finished, but you amazed me by finishing it quickly. I have one question though. Is there any specific reason why you left out the flagicons? If there wasn't a specific reason, do you mind if I go and add them back in? Thanks! Deflagro C/T 02:45, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Final comment from me : ) Partially copied from the WP:P_talk page. "I removed the flagicons because I had concerns regarding the flags not correctly representing the country that the person was born in - would we consider those born in pre-War of Independence America English, or American? We could take a look at them more closely and try and put in an appropriate flag I guess. That would probably be good : ). Comments - yes, that's a good point. I'll try and skim the article from now on, rather than just doing a quick copy paste job". Thank you also for the barn star! Now I just need to find an excuse to give you one.. ; )
Some final thoughts: I might have a shot in my sandbox at reducing the column width and getting some images in on the RHS of the list. To make it a bit more interesting. I might also have a go at writing a short paragraph basically covering piracy in the period that the list is about, just to add some backdrop. shasYarr!/T|C 13:24, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied here:
Okay. That makes sense. Deflagro C/T 14:52, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PPS: (sorry, last thing so you can archive this) I've started having a go at this (List of pirates#Golden_Age_of_Piracy:_1690-1730) and I've finished the comments for the buccaneers. Just the sea dogs to go! I've got a few concerns, but I'll put a note up on the article talk page rather than here. shasYarr!/T|C 14:56, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replied here:
I wasn't going to archive the conversation. I was just putting it all together so in a month or two when I do archive it, the whole conversation is together in case someone has to go through it for some reason or I can find it easier. I'll take a look at the article's talk page. Deflagro C/T 15:02, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting your opinion..

Rather than reference individual pirates in the List of pirates - although I'd still like to reference some of them - I've had a shot at compiling external links/reference material for pirates of that particular age period. Work so far on it is going on over on my sandbox.. your opinion would be most gratefully received (I'm more than a little paranoid about things getting deleted). shasYarr!/T|C 22:18, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry didn't realize you were in the middle of following up the peer-review. I do think British spelling is best (as he was British). BTW, spelling in -ize is acceptable in British English, and is the house-style of the Oxford University Press, tho' probably a minority spelling here. DuncanHill (talk) 02:13, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say leave it as -ise, as some people get confused when they see -ize alongside honour and harbour and the like. My personal preference is for -ize (but then i use shewn when most pople would have shown.) DuncanHill (talk) 02:17, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good work on the article - but I'm afraid I've just stuck a {{what}} template in it here [1]. DuncanHill (talk) 03:07, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well really it's asking what currency - could be 4 million dollars or 4 million ponds or 4 million spondulicks! There's a note on the talk page about currencies too (latest thread there). It would be good to keep some sort of comparison with modern values, but they do need clarity on which modern currency is being used, and a reference for the conversion method used - unfortunately I don't know of a source for converting Tudor era ducats to modern values. No. I was put in a depressing situation and completely forgot hat it was your guestbook and accidentaly saved. I had a trip to the lake district and it felt like two weeks 'cause it was so good. Chubbennaitor (leave me a message!) 21:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:53, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Piracy participation update

Hello Deflagro,

WikiProject Piracy is currently undergoing some updates and changes, and we are trying to find out who is still active in the project. You are currently listed as a participant on the list of participants, and we would like for you to update your status. Please move your name to the section that best describes your activity in the project:

  • Active - still active and interested within the scope of the WikiProject.
  • Semi-Active - still active on Wikipedia, but not as active in regards to the WikiProject.
  • Former Members - a catch-all classification for those editors who are not active on Wikipedia, those that are still on Wikipedia, but no longer part of this WikiProject, or those that have otherwise not moved their names to another classification yet.

Thank you,
Adolphus79 (talk) 16:50, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Sean Fields, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sean Fields. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Ash (talk) 22:44, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Birthday

Have a great day!

Hello Deflagro, you have received this notice because you have placed your name on the list of members of WikiProject Paintball. We are currently looking to make the wikiproject more active, and in doing so, we need to have a list of active members on the wikiproject. If you wish to stay an active part of wikiproject Paintball, please add your username to Active users. Conversely, if you wish to leave the wikiproject, please remove your name from the list of members at Wikipedia:WikiProject Paintball. Thank you.

Actually, I was surprised and a bit glad I was mentioned in the New York Times article.

I caused a wide debate in regards to censorship. And news flash, kid, I've always been an ass. Thanks for your sarcastic comments.[2]
