Business District in Manila

During the 60's, Philippine Cinema was one of the biggest movie industries in the world, together with United States and India. The country was releasing numerous films then and movie-goers were frequent in theaters. The industry has catapulted numerous names to fame and gained influence, such stars like; Fernando Poe Jr., Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, Dolphy, Sharon Cuneta and Maricel Soriano. But in the recent decades, the business is rapidly sliding down as the national economy is declining and foreign films are too dominant in the competition. But then again, as marketing strategies of film companies are improving and the quality of feature films are getting better, the box-office in the Philippines is gaining grounds once again. In fact, the industry is generating almost ₱ 1.5 billion in revenue annually and employing 260,000 people at present.

Top-grossing films of all-time

  • Titanic (1998)

When Paramount's Titanic soared to a phenomenal US$ 1.8 billion worldwide setting the record for the world's highest-grossing movie of all time, it also won the top spot on the All-Time Philippine Box-Office Records. It was released on the fourth day of February 1998, and it achieved an impressive revenue throughout its run, banking a total of $ 4.8 million, which is equivalent to ₱ 194 million at that time. Based on the final figures, Titanic's performance in Philippine Cinemas was more successful compared to its neighboring countries—Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

  • Spider-Man (2002)

Four years after the success of Titanic, Sony Pictures' Marvel franchise, Spider-Man, grabbed the highest spot. Released on May 3, 2002, the blockbuster superhero has earned ₱ 195.65 million, slightly above Titanic's. In 2004, its sequel, Spider-Man 2, grossed an enormous ₱ 227 million, snatching the notch as country's number one film.

  • Superman (2006)

In 2006, the return of Superman has made a titanic impact when it peaked in the number one spot, and defeated Spider-Man 2. This Warner Bros. production has a combined sales of ₱ 256 million, according to the Philippine Box-Office Records.

  • Spider-Man 3 (2007)

After Superman Returns managed to get the top spot from Spider-Man 2, the third part of the Spider-Man series revenged as it ultimately soar to a phenomenal blockbuster hit. According to box-office reports, Spider-Man 3 captured ₱ 236 million on its opening weekend, making it the highest-opening weekend of all-time in the country. Then on its close in July 1, 2007, the total box-office gross of the film was ₱ 423.46 million, thus it is the first and only film to hit 400 million.

  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

In 2007, studio giant, Paramount Pictures, released the much anticipated movie remake of Transformers and banked ₱ 272.65 million on the box-office. Surprisingly, its sequel in 2009 did greater, as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made an enormous ₱ 357.89 million and hailing at number two on the All-Time Record.

  • Iron Man 2 (2010)

Iron Man 2 rapidly lost altitude in its second weekend, but the potent insurgency of Robin Hood didn't take root enough to usurp it. Plunging 59 percent, Iron Man 2 collected $52 million on nearly 10,000 screens at 4,390 theaters. That ranked 14th among the all time top-grossing second weekends, despite the sequel having posted the fifth highest-grossing opening weekend.

  • The current list

As the ticket in cinemas has inflated throughout the history, old films were out-grossed by new films, thus the top-grossing films are those movies that are recently released. On top is 2007's Spider-Man 3 of Columbia Pictures, which earned a whooping ₱ 423.46 million on the box-office, making it too huge for the top two, 2009's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, as it banked ₱ 357.89 million.

At present, Paramount's Titanic has been eclipsed by another James Cameron movie Avataras highest-grossing picture. In addition, the unsinkable ship has already drowned, and is currently at number 11 in the all-time ranking.

Meanwhile, locally produced feature films are now recovering from its downfall and greatly competing with Hollywood films now. For the record, Star Cinema and VIVA Films' You Changed My Life proved the rise of Filipino films as it enters the All-Time Top 10 of Philippine Box-Office when it overtook Spider-Man 2 this year, but beaten at the Top 5 by Avatar, The Twilight SagasNew Moon and Eclipse, and 2012.

This is a short list of the Highest-Grossing Movies of All-Time in the Philippines, based on actual Box-Office revenues in Philippine Peso (₱).
