Hollyoaks is a long running Channel 4 soap opera from the United Kingdom. This is a list of characters who first appeared on the programme during 2010, listed in order of their first appearance. In January 2010, it was announced that Paul Marquess would be taking over the role of series producer from Lucy Allan, who had been with the show for one year. Marquess fully took control on 17 January 2010, onwards. Allan introduced one new main character in February, Martin Campbell the father of teenager Ricky Campbell. March saw the introduction of Jem Costello, a new love interest for Gilly Roach. The character of Eva Strong was introduced in April as the biological mother of Anita Roy, and Texas Longford joined Hollyoaks in May. Marquess' first major casting was former Footballers Wives actress Phina Oruche in the role of Gabby Sharpe along with her children Amber and Taylor and husband Phil, all of whom appeared in June. In July, the Costello's became the second family of the year to be introduced, consisting of Carl and Heidi Costello and their sons Seth and Riley. July also saw the arrivals of Heidi's cousin Mitzeee Minniver and alien Kevin Smith. Three characters joined in August: Jasmine Costello, Heidi and Carl's daughter; Bart McQueen, a member of the long-established McQueen family; and Brendan Brady, Cheryl Brady's half brother. In September, the O'Connor's were the third family of the year to be introduced, with daughter Sinead, son Finn, stepmother Diane and father Rob. Hollyoaks Later (2009)

Jamie, played by Finn Jones, first appeared on-screen on 28 September 2009 in the second series of Hollyoaks Later. Jamie is the love interest of Hannah Ashworth (Emma Rigby). Jones reprised the role in February 2010, in main Hollyoaks episodes,[1] making his first on-screen appearance on 1 February 2010.[2]

The character of Jamie was created as a temporary love interest for Hannah, intended only to feature in the spin-off of Hollyoaks, entitled Hollyoaks Later.[3] On 22 October 2009, it was announced that Jones was to reprise the role of Jamie for a short stint.[1] Speaking of Jamie's appearance in the main show, a Hollyoaks spokesperson stated: "Hannah's had a terrible time of late and Jamie's sudden arrival in the village next year reopens a wound that's only just started to heal."[1]

When Hannah goes to a music festival with Rhys Ashworth (Andrew Moss) and Josh Ashworth (Sonny Flood), Jamie notices her and they meet. Jamie flirts with Hannah and they develop feelings for each other. Later, he tricks Hannah into taking an ecstasy pill with him. After Hannah finds Rhys held at gunpoint by Jamie's boss Kev (James Cartwright), she becomes embroiled and Jamie helps her escape. They then decide to leave together and Hannah throws his ecstasy pills away, telling him he does not need to deal drugs anymore. Jamie frantically tries to pick them up and Hannah realises he has chosen drugs over her, and she leaves.

In February 2010, Jamie arrives in Hollyoaks village looking for Hannah, who is angry to see him. He explains that he is not involved in criminal activity any longer. Hannah then decides to rekindle their romance. However, Rhys sees Jamie and warns im to stay away. Hannah's mother Suzanne (Suzanne Hall) shows Jamie a recording of Hannah during an anorexia relapse, leaving him shocked. Later, Rhys and Hannah's husband Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) kidnap Jamie. Hannah assumes that Jamie has left because of the recording, but he escapes and explains himself. After talking they agree to leave the village together and go to a hotel. Blue (Kyle Rees) arrives at the hotel and asks for his money which Jamie has stolen. Hannah then realises that Jamie has not changed. Jamie attacks Blue and stabs him. Hannah calls the police, who arrive with Darren. Jamie grabs Hannah and threatens to stab her so he can escape. Darren attempts to stop him leaving, but Jamie stabs him. Jamie is then arrested.

In December 2009, in an interview with Digital Spy series producer Lucy Allan revealed that Ricky had a secret, commenting: [...] "And Ricky has a secret, so we'll meet elements of his family..."[6] In early 2010, Inside Soap revealed that a new character called Martin would be joining the show and that Hollyoaks producers were not revealing any information about the character.[7] In February 2010, it was revealed that Martin was Ricky's father who suffers from Multiple sclerosis, and that Ricky is his full-time carer.[4]

When Ricky's best friend Duncan Button (Dean Aspen) notices his strange behaviour, he tells Anita Roy (Saira Choudhry) that he will find out what Ricky is doing. Duncan follows Ricky home and tries to see inside, where he hears raised voices and a man lying on the floor. Duncan shouts and Ricky lets him in where he accuses Ricky of being a drug dealer, however Ricky tells Duncan the man is his father Martin. Martin tells Ricky to get rid of Duncan. Later, Ricky finds Duncan and explains that Martin is suffering from Multiple sclerosis. When Duncan gets Ricky into trouble at school with Des Townsend (Kris Deedigan), he decides to help out and visits Martin. Martin offers to make Duncan dinner, he begins to struggle and falls onto the floor. Duncan panics and Martin grabs him and tells him to keep the incident a secret. He then helps Martin into his chair.

On different occasions Martin tells Ricky to go out and enjoy himself, often injuring himself whilst Ricky is not present and calling him to come back home for help. This begins to affect Ricky's school work. Whilst Ricky is offered support, Kris Fisher accidentally assaults him. Ricky tells Martin he does not want to go to hospital in case his arm is broken meaning he can no longer look after him. Soon though, after going to Ricky's home, Kris finds out about Martin's MS, and when Martin suddenly takes ill, Kris has to phone a hospital, where Ricky is terrified of being found out; however eventually he gets to take his father home. Things took a sinister tone though when Ricky told Kris that if he were to tell social services about his father's problems and condition, he would tell the school about what happened to his arm; Kris reluctantly agreed to keep the secret.

Doug then finds out some secrets about Kevin's past.

Despite his housemates finding out the truth Kevin still keeps up the pretence of being an alien and attempts to build a Beacon ,with the help of Elliot, in order for his parents to find him. Elliot finds Kevin's birth certificate and works out the truth. When the beacon is finally turned on he gives Tom a telescope as a gift. Danny Houston, played by Darren Day, is a friend of Brendan Brady (Emmett J. Scanlan) and partner in ownership of club Chez Chez with Brendan's sister Cheryl Brady (Bronagh Waugh). He first appeared on 19 October 2010.[68]

The character was first announced in September 2010, with London West End star Darren Day being cast in the role.[69][70] It was revealed that Danny would appear in only one episode, returning later in the year.[69] Of his casting and character, Day stated, "I've really enjoyed filming with Hollyoaks and I'm excited about coming back. Danny is the type of character any actor would kill to play and the part has been made even better as I'm working with great talent such as Claire, Emmett and Bronagh."[68] He later spoke about the character in an interview with Digital Spy, "There is going to be no-one badder than Danny Houston — he's about as bad as it gets and is the epitome of a soap villain really. I've been told that some soap magazines are nicknaming him Dirty Dan! For me, that's really exciting."[71]

Series producer Paul Marquess also described the character: "Danny Houston is a dangerous but very charming character who makes an aggressive impact in his first episodes. Darren plays the part brilliantly and I’m delighted that we're able to bring him back later this year."[68] Scanlan mentioned Day was a "great addition to the cast".[72]

Silas Blissett, played by Jeff Rawle, first appeared on 23 December 2010[79] and is currently central to a murder storyline involving India Longford (Beth Kingston), who met him through internet dating as he posed as a man named 'Cameron'.[80] He is the father of already-established character Heidi Costello (Kim Tiddy). In Rawle's first episode portraying the character, he was credited as 'Mystery Man'.

Hollyoaks producers announced the murder plot in early December 2010.[81] The Hollyoaks team worked closely with the University of Central Lancashire's Cyberspace Research Unit to raise awareness of internet safety. Dr Jo Bryce of the university spoke of India's murder, saying, "If the storyline can remind one young person to protect themselves when engaging in online activity, then that can only be a positive thing. Too many youngsters think they are immune to online risks and this storyline is a reminder that you don't always know who you're talking to online."[81] Series producer Paul Marquess also spoke of the plot: "This is a terrifying murder that highlights the dangers of meeting strangers online. The storyline, which launches at Christmas, will take us right through 2011 and audiences will be gripped to find out if the dangerous killer will strike again."[81]

Commenting on the storyline, Rawle said, "People think that things like this will never happen to them but as we all know, it can go very wrong — and it does for India."[82] Rawle also described his character, saying he is "very interesting" and "complex".[82] Whilst discussing the storyline with the Liverpool Echo, Kingston praised Rawle: "Jeff is amazing and I was so pleased when I found out he would be playing Cameron."[83]

Daniel Kilkelly of Digital Spy also praised Rawle's performance on the website's blog, stating: "Jeff Rawle, who plays 'Cameron', does a fantastic job of portraying the dual role of the affable older man and sinister killer. He should definitely be one to watch out for as he becomes a more permanent fixture in the village in the weeks ahead."[84] Kilkelly also described India's murder episodes as "unmissable" and "two of the strongest episodes of the year".[84]

Storylines

Silas first appears as a man who India meets as she makes her way to meet online date 'Cameron'. India gives Silas her phone to call for help with his broken down car, and is confused when Silas mentions her name. He reveals himself to be Cameron and murders India. Silas wraps India's body in a carpet and dumps her in the nearby woods. He later appears dressed as Santa Claus in The Dog in the Pond, where he is revealed to be the father of Heidi Costello. Silas is angered to discover granddaughter Jasmine Costello has gender identity disorder and has taken the persona of a boy named Jason. However, after talking, Silas apologises. After India's body is found, Silas and Heidi tell Riley Costello that Heidi's mother was murdered, hinting that Silas killed her.
