Hugo Mariano Pavone (born May 27, 1982 in Tres Sargentos, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine football player who plays for Club Atlético River Plate on loan from Real Betis in Spain, as a striker.

Club career

Estudiantes

Pavone left his childhood club Boca Juniors at the age of 14 and went on to feature for Estudiantes de La Plata in the Argentine first division for over ten years. His most notable achievement there was scoring 16 goals in the Clausura 2005, making him the top scorer.

Pavone was selected by sports newspaper Olé as the best player in the 2006 Apertura tournament, where he scored Estudiantes's first goal against Quilmes Atlético Club and also the side's last which secured the 2–1 win over alma mater Boca in the final. All in all, Pavone scored 11 goals in this tournament, but also excelled at assisting his teammates, as in the fifth goal against Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in the October 15 derby or his last assist in the come from behind 2-1 win over Newells.

Betis

Pavone signed for Real Betis in late June 2007.[1] The player, who was on his honeymoon in the city of Seville, was purchased by for 6.8 million, becoming the first signing under compatriot Héctor Cúper's management. On July 23, Pavone scored on his debut, a friendly game against neighbours CD San Fernando, also assisting fellow Argentinian Juan Pablo Caffa.

His competitive debut came in La Liga on August 26, against Recreativo de Huelva. In his first two seasons, he failed to impress, but had a good run from November 2007-January 2008, when he netted six goals in five matches, including braces against Real Zaragoza (a 2–1 win, as a late substitute) and UD Almería (a 3–1 win). But, overall, his stay at Betis has been subpar.

Pavone was supposed to sign for Calcio Catania in Italy on February 1, 2010.[2] However, due to Ewerthon's refusal to sign with the Andalusians in order to take his place, the deal was cancelled.

River Plate

On July 23 2010, Club Atlético River Plate and Betis arranged a one-year loan deal for Pavone, who returned to his country after three years.[3] Due to his powerful style and great effort, Pavone has become a fan favorite. In the Apertura 2010 tournament, Pavone scored 5 goals, helping River to climb out of the relegation battle.

International career

Pavone made his debut for Argentina against Chile, on 18 April 2007.
