Puss in Boots is an upcoming 3D computer-animated adventure film being produced by DreamWorks Animation, directed by Chris Miller (who directed Shrek the Third in 2007), executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, and written by Tom Wheeler. It is set to be released in theaters November 4, 2011 in Real D 3D and IMAX 3D.[1]

The film is a spinoff prequel to the Shrek series and it follows the character Puss in Boots on his adventures before his first appearance in Shrek 2 in 2004. Accompanied by his sidekicks, Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws, he tries to save the world from the two murderous outlaws called Jack and Jill, who discovered an ancient power that can destroy the world.

Plot

The story takes place before Puss met Shrek, when he was a swashbuckling hero who protected the innocent. A bunch of old pub thugs tell him that two murderous outlaws called Jack and Jill have discovered an ancient power that can destroy the world. Puss then sets off on a journey with his old friend Humpty Dumpty who also introduces him to Kitty Softpaws, a sly black cat who takes an interest in Puss's journey. With his new sidekicks, Puss sets off on his most adventurous and dangerous journey ever.

Cast

Production

The film has been in development since 2004, when Shrek 2 was released.[2] As a Shrek 2 spin-off, it was originally planned for release in 2008 as a direct-to-video film,[3] but this was changed in 2006 in favor of a theatrical release.[4] Production on the film began after the release of 2010's Shrek Forever After. Banderas said in an interview in early 2010 that he had completed the first recordings of his character.[5] Late in 2010, Guillermo del Toro, director of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, had signed on as executive producer.[6] Except for Puss, the film will feature all new characters. Citing the co-writer, David H. Steinberg, "It doesn't overlap with Shrek at all. Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn't know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn't write conflicting storylines."[7] The film was teased in Shrek Forever After when Shrek finally put the book of Shrek away and put it next to a book titled "Puss in Boots".

Soundtrack

Henry Jackman, the composer for Puss in Boots, is utilizing folk instruments of traditional Latin music. Inspired by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla y Matheu, Jackman plans to blend guitars and Latin percussion with an orchestral sound influenced by Claude-Achille Debussy and Joseph-Maurice Ravel.[8]

Marketing

The first teaser trailer was released on March 4, 2011 and was shown in front of Rango. This particular trailer features the song "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)", by rapper Pitbull.[9]

A full length trailer was shown in front of Kung Fu Panda 2, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Cars 2, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, Winnie the Pooh and The Smurfs.[citation needed] This trailer could be seen on the official website on Sunday, June 26, 2011.

McDonald's will sell a line of Puss in Boots toys in November 2011.[citation needed]

Video game

THQ has been confirmed to develop a video game based on the film on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS. The Xbox 360 version has been confirmed to feature Kinect support.[citation needed]
