Dead or Alive 5 is an upcoming fighting game in the Dead or Alive franchise, set for release in September 2012. It is the first game in the series to see a multi-platform release since Dead or Alive 2 and the only one to be released simultaneously on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Development

Dead or Alive 5 is the first console installment of the series that will be developed without the input of series creator Tomonobu Itagaki. It is also the first installment to be released for the PlayStation 3. Rumours about the game being developed also for the PS3 have circulated already in January 2010.[2][3] GameSpot has listed the game as being exhibited by Tecmo Koei at their booth during the E3 2010.[4]

Dead Or Alive 5 was officially announced in September 2011 a the Tokyo Game Show on September 14, 2011 for a 2012 release.[5][6] The first trailer showcased Ryu Hayabusa and Hayate doing battle on top of an under-construction skyscraper which is eventually destroyed by a stray beam swinging from a crane, revealing the more intricate environmental interaction as well as a new attack of Hayate.[7] A teaser image was also released at the event, with producer Yosuke Hayashi stating that the image represents the sensuality that the game is now seeking to portray in a more sophisticated tone.[8] Producer Yosuke Hayashi said that his team is committed to making the environment more involved in the fighting experience than ever before.[8] Further screenshots have confirmed Hitomi and Ayane will also be playable,[9] while Kasumi was featured in a promotional poster.[10]

A demo of the game, packaged with Ninja Gaiden 3, will feature these two characters plus Hayabusa and Hayate (the characters confirmed from the teaser). The Xbox 360 version of the demo will allow the use of Hayabusa and Hitomi, while the PlayStation 3 version will make Hayate and Ayane playable.[11] The collector's edition of Ninja Gaiden 3 will make all four characters playable.[12]

A trailer unveiled at the GDC 2012 revealed that the game would include Akira Yuki from the Virtua Fighter series as a playable guest character.
