i notice if you click on the picture of the Trophy Cabinet the ground is still rferred to as: The trophy cabinet inside Friends Provident St Mary's Football Stadium. Home of the 'Saints' Southampton Football Club. Friends Provident have not been included in the name for a while now. Can someone change it? Surely it is St Mary's Football Stdium?

Leon Best

Pardon my ignorance, but why is Leon Best showing an Irish flag against his name in "out on loan", when his article says he was born in Nottingham and doesn't mention anything about playing for Ireland? -- Arwel (talk) 20:05, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that Leon has played for the Republic of Ireland's U21 team. Jjd27 21:29, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

His mother is Irish, and he has indeed played for Ireland at U21 level. Dan Kerins 01:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kyle Critchell & Craig Richards

The official Southampton FC site (http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/team/?page_id=5) has Critchell & Richards as first team players (without numbers), although there is no mention of them on this page. I've added them onto the squad at the end. Chris Larkin 19:06, 01 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scummers Section

Does anyone think that this section should be moved to form an article on its own, incorporating a list of players who've appeared for both teams?

--Daemonic Kangaroo 07:14, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, but arent "Scummers" the fans rather than the players? Nexus Icon 14:58, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This section is now rather out of date. The section was moved to an article of its own some time ago, and has been renamed South Coast Derby. Scummers and Skates: The Southampton-Portsmouth Rivalry was deemed to be unacceptable as the title for an article. Hey Ho! Daemonic Kangaroo 17:13, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A note on British English

British English should be used for articles on Britain related topics. Likewise, American English should be used on articles pertaining to American topics. For a clearer example, please visit this sub-section on the differences between their usage. However, is" works better than "are" with the term club as it is a singular and not a plural noun. (Compare with the word team which is a plural noun) --Siva1979Talk to me 13:33, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Club honours

Why is there not a list of our cup and league achievments like other teams?

Famous Fans

DCan we either clarify that Sir David Frost is a Saints fan, or remove his name? Many believe he is, but many also believe he is an Arsenal fan Nexus Icon 14:58, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Club Records

I've moved these higher up, as I thought they were rather more important than a list of famous fans and the like. Dan Kerins 02:18, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Intro

I suggest cutting down the intro. It looks to me that there is too much in there, most of which is replicated later in the article. Why do we need a list of ex players in the intro? Dan Kerins 12:34, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree entirely. I'm sure that with a bit of work we can bring this article up to a much higher standard. There are too many lists for my liking, many of which could be relegated to sub-articles. Daemonic Kangaroo 12:50, 13 April 2007 (UTC) p.s. It's good to see someone else prepared to declare his colours as a Saints fan.[reply]

I've made a start on the intro, but as will always be the case, a bit of tinkering from others won't hurt. Good point about the lists. I was looking at Arsenal's article and that is the sort of thing we should be aspiring to, I reckon. Dan Kerins 07:06, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I updated one of the statements to be better written. But it also said the highest-ever finish by Southampton was 2nd place. I tried to clarify that point, that it was in Division Two but also added their highest finish ever, 6th, in the top flight (the old Division One). Prk166 (talk) 15:53, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, your edit was wrong. Saints finished second in the top flight in 1983-84. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 19:01, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

General Improvements

I've gone a bit mad tinkering with various things today, and it's got me thinking we need to decide on exactly which bits need work to get this article up to scratch. I reckon a shorter history section, (have a sub article instead), fewer notable players, no-more famous fans unless part of a more general supporters section, a section on the kit and brief description of how it's changed over the years and more about the crest and anthem. Would it be possible to get records for the individual managers too, like a lot of other clubs have? Any other ideas or thoughts? Or am I just being stupid? Dan Kerins 18:10, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought - more pictures were relevant, especially on things like the badge/kit/fans etc. Dan Kerins 18:11, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a new page entitled History of Southampton F.C., with the hope of having a shorter history on this article and a more in depth one elsewhere. All I've done so far is copy and paste the history over, but haven't touched this article yet. Dan Kerins 17:10, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

- Made a table for non-playing staff, but want to verify the content before sticking it up (particularly the nationality of all the board members. I've stuck it on my talk page for the time being if anyone can help. Dan Kerins 14:08, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Crest

They're threatening to delete the crest., so I've uploaded a new one with a fair-use rationale (and it has a black border on the halo - the other one didn't and looked a bit funny IMHO). Dan Kerins 11:06, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I note the flower in the crest was referred to as a 'Mayflower'. As used on the City Crest. I thought the City Crest was based on one large White Rose, and two smaller Red Roses, going back to the events in the War of the Roses, when Southampton was asked which side they were on. They displayed a shield of Half Red, and Half White with the Roses attached to the shield in the order as above. Leaving either side to guess which side the City (Town at that time) was on. Or at least that is the story I was told at my Hampshire School04:44, 18 June 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bettybutt (talkcontribs) Now changed, see below for the City's Coat of ArmsBetty Butt (talk) 05:52, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can the New Crest for 2010/11 Season be put in in place of the present one? Or is it worth it for one season?Betty Butt (talk) 14:45, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. - Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 15:03, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Trust

I was never sure about how appropriate a section on the trusts was, but someone has now completely removed it without discussion. Anyone think it should be there, or do they think it's better left out? Dan Kerins 09:18, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As the edit was by User:Amber spyglass9096, whose other edits are all vandalism (see Paul Ince), I have re-instated the trust section, albeit lower down the article. I certainly think it has more merit than the "Famous supporters" section. Daemonic Kangaroo 12:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. Please add new subjects at the end of the page as is customary on WP. This is best done by use of the "+" symbol on the tool bar at the top. Thanks.

Notable Former Players

Do some of these really qualify as notable? For example:

  • Belmadi
  • van Damme
  • Fuller
  • McCann
  • Quashie
  • Keller
  • Østenstad

Dan Kerins 12:48, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we set the criterion that they should have been full internationals whilst with Saints, then some of these should go. I have deleted Lezama & Ali Dia on these grounds. We will need to go through the others and check each one out. There are also players from the more distant past who maybe should be included; e.g. Arthur Chadwick - more research is needed! Daemonic Kangaroo 14:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ali Dia wasn't famous, just infamous. I think over time his signing is still worthy of a quick mention on the detailed Saints history page. It shows the state of the club at the time. Prk166 (talk) 15:52, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Southampton-FC.png

Image:Southampton-FC.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

BetacommandBot 18:30, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I amended the fair use rationale as requested, but the image has still been deleted regardless, without any further explanation. Dan K 06:28, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded a new version of the crest - hopefully the rationale is acceptable, as it's the same as used for many other club badges. --Daemonic Kangaroo 06:56, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kit graphic

Fairly minor thing, but I'm not too sure how to change it.

The stripes on the home kit appear to be the wrong way around - red should be white and vice versa. Could someone change it please, or at least explain to me how to change it without completely making a mess of it! Thanks. Dan K (talk) 10:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

home kit

The home socks are white and not black. Could someone please edit thisR250c (talk) 23:09, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stern John

Since Stern John is no longer listed on the club website as a player, I've since removed him from the club page, and he was quoted as saying that he is a free agent Adamw1993 (talk) 17:20, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ben Reeves

Why do people keep removing Ben Reeves (DF, #44) from the squad? Andre666 (talk) 16:28, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sam Argent

I note someone keeps removing Sam Argent from the 1st team squad list on the basis he's not in the 1st team squad on the official site. Neither are Harlee Dean, Andy Crosby or Aarran Racine. Surely there should be some consistency? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.111.67.176 (talk) 17:08, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They should all be excluded or shown as "Reserves". Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 17:36, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Promotion 2011

Could people please not delete my edit regarding our promotion to the nPower Championship. Getting fed up with contributing only for it to be removed. JosebaIW —Preceding undated comment added 11:31, 9 May 2011 (UTC).[reply]

I believe the updated logo is not the same as what is was a couple of season ago. If this could be found to replace the current logo, it would be appreciated. Tedaram (talk) 19:57, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jason Puncheon

I see Jason Puncheon has been removed from the squad list. Shouldn't he be kept on the squad without any number (like Joseph Mills) as he is still under contract? 94.3.76.144 (talk) 10:50, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Change of ground name

Someone had written Saints drew at 'The Stadium of Burnley'. I have changed that to Turf Moor, which is where Burnley play. Sorry to be pedantic~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bettybutt (talkcontribs) 03:19, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Squad table format

A discussion is being held here on the possibility of rolling out a new squad template. The new template, named {{football squad player2}}, differs from the standard squad layout in several ways:

  • It features a sort function
  • Comes in a single column format that can be understood by screen readers.
    • Single column format ensures that low resolution browsers, including mobile devices, do not get part or all of the second column cut off.
    • Single column format ensures less clutter, particularly at lower resolutions, for wide sections such as the Arsenal loan section.
  • It gives nationality its own column; at present flags are featured in a blank, untitled column
  • It complies with Wikipedia's guidance on flag usage.
  • It leaves enough space to add images of current players, an example of which can be seen at Watford F.C#Current squad.

It is proposed that the new template be added to some of Wikipedia's most high-profile club articles, which might include Southampton F.C.. To give your thoughts, please read and contribute to the discussion at WikiProject Football.

Promotion date

Please bare in mind that promoted teams do not officially join their new leagues until the end of the season in June. See this discussion at the football WikiProject for clarification (or alternatively, this one). Please do not change the league to Premier League until then.
