Carterize
Hi, Medeis.

Your final post on the metrification thread confirmed what I twigged to some time ago: that this "Carterize" thing was a joke. Nothing wrong with jokes, I make them all the time, as do others. Trouble is, if you don’t make some signal to that effect, you can seriously mislead people. All it takes is a smiley. Your mention of this term was supported by 2 links and no indication there was some irony going on, which to a reader in a hurry without time to click on the links, looks for all the world like a serious ref desk answer, but one that has potential for spreading misinformation. I made my attitude to that clear yesterday. If we could wrap it up on that basis, I’d love to move on.

But there’s something else going on, something extremely weird, because I keep on referring to the links you’ve provided, but you keep on denying I’m seeing the right ones. I’m really not being deliberately obtuse or deliberately confrontational or deliberately anything, but I need to sort it out. I'm well aware that Google/Bing/whatever results can sometimes look rather different depending on which continent you're on, but this one doesn't seem to be accounted for by that.

Your very first mention of "Carterize" had 2 links, something I have been aware of from the very beginning. I just want you to be in no doubt of that, because you have strongly denied it three times now (maybe we can call you "St Peter of the Reference Desk").

The first link was an internal piped link to the Wikipedia article Jimmy Carter.

The second link was an external link to something else. When I click on that second one, I get a Google search for: "jimmy carter" "metric sytem". It gives 278,000 results, the first few of which are:
* The Metric Marvels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
* Metrication in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
* What jimmy carter has to do with the metric system....? - Yahoo ...
* Word Dork: Blame Jimmy Carter
* Reader's view: Nation needs to move to metric system - Midland ...
* Niches :: The Metric System
* History of The United States Metric Board
* Jimmy Carter bringing metric burger to La Grange | carter, land ...
* Give An Inch On The Metric System - Chicago Tribune.

Do you agree so far? Is this any different from what you get when you click on that link?

You referred to this link to support your claim that "Carterize" is the preferred term. I said: "You keep on saying that but your link above doesn't provide evidence of any such word." And it plainly doesn't.

That's why I went off and did MY OWN search for "carterize" and found only 461 hits. I provided that link to show the results of MY search, in order to demonstrate YOUR claim was unfounded, because YOUR link has zero mention of the word "Carterize".

When you wrote "You seem to have missed this. And just exactly …", the this was a link to precisely the same Google search you had previously provided, the one with the results I listed above. That's why I said "No, I didn't miss it. It's the exact link I referred to".

Agree so far?

But you still insisted I had missed your link. Please tell me what I was missing at that point, because I just don't get it.

Later there was a third charge: "Jack's search was for the key word "Carterize" like the piped link on Carterize I provided above. Click his link to see what Bing uses as the search word. But refer back to my first mention of Carterize and you will see there are two links. It is obvious the numbered ref link was overlooked and Jack didn't realize the difference, even when I repeated it since he was still talking about hits on Carterize. Hence the need for me to bring it to his attention a third time. Given he still insists he knew this all along I will not press the matter further."

Yet, as I've very clearly outlined above and on the thread itself, I most definitely DO insist I knew this all along. I have ALWAYS known you gave two links, and I've quoted the second one back at you more than once, to prove that I have seen and read what you provided - and discovered it does NOT contain what you claim it contains, viz. evidence for the word "carterize". So once again, what have I missed?

I would like to put this bizarrerie down to extremely anomalous search results and move on, but in my heart of hearts I know it's not that. Gotta go now, I hear a cock crowing. :) -- ♬ Jack of Oz ♬ [[User talk:JackofOz#top|[your turn]]] 21:27, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

:It was a joke. The results piped to carterize did not support the definition because it was a joke. For those who might not get it due to age or nationality the ref note to "jimmy carter" "metric system" provided dozens of sources making clear Carter's unpopularity for his failed campaign both with those who opposed it and those who were disappointed at his failure. It was a joke. Your continuing to demand that I explain it makes it less and less funny. μηδείς (talk) 21:44, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

:: Thank you. Online humour is fraught with special difficulties that mostly don't apply in the real world, and they sometimes trip up even the most experienced editors. I've been caught out too, on occasion, so it's not just you. I understood some time ago that it was a joke, but my issue was that you were not just denying I'd misinterpreted your link, but that I had seen it at all, and you made this denial three times, despite plenty of proof to the contrary. Now that you've acknowleged all your charges of ignorance against me were always baseless, I can move on. It just serves to demonstrate that what one person calls "humour" and what another person calls "humour" can often be as different as zebras and raspberries. As I said yesterday, whether something is "funny" or not is never the point of humour. Cheers. -- ♬ Jack of Oz ♬ [[User talk:JackofOz#top|[your turn]]] 22:03, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

What nature is, then, and the meaning of the terms 'by nature' and 'according to nature', has been stated. That nature exists, it would be absurd to try to prove; for it is obvious that there are many things of this kind, and to prove what is obvious by what is not is the mark of a man who is unable to distinguish what is self-evident from what is not. (This state of mind is clearly possible. A man blind from birth might reason about colours.) Presumably therefore such persons must be talking about words without any thought to correspond. - Aristotle's Physics Book 2, chapter 1

A barnstar for you!

The Graphic Designer's Barnstar
I love your montages. They are very beautiful. I could look at them all day. Thank you! HoopoeBaijiKite 19:26, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I really appreciate that. I did work hard on trying to get them not only to be biologically broad-based but also attractive. Your encouragement makes me want to create some more. μηδείς (talk) 20:11, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring for beginners.

It takes two, baby. And you revert me every single time I change your image. That is why your image always wins, because I don't edit war. You always win by default because I don't push the rules and you do. So now you accuse me of edit warring? Oh my god that is beautiful! At any rate, please go to your RfC and demonstrate where the consensus you claim comes from. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:33, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

 • I invite you to demonstrate how your image is the consensus image here. Given that you repeatedly revert me because you claim that you have consensus I feel you should have to demonstrate that fact rather than simply assert it. Sabine's Sunbird talk 19:40, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have a bad case of the flu. I 'll respond as soon as I feel up to it. μηδείς (talk) 19:49, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Then rest up and get well. Sabine's Sunbird talk 21:43, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Help Survey

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,

DYK for Miami cannibal attack

Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have nominated Miami Zombie for a DYK listing with you and those editors who have contributed 1000 bytes or more listed as authors. See Template:Did you know nominations/2012 Miami cannibalism incident if you want to make any changes. μηδείς (talk) 02:21, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's great news! Thanks! Thanks for nominating it ... and also for making me aware of the nomination. So, exactly how do we know if/when it will be approved or accepted to appear in the DYK? Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:23, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. This has been a rather pleasant and productive collaboration all around. Look here for comments and updates on the nomination. DYK seems backed up. Nominations used to clear within about a week. You can help the process by reading other nominations and helping with the review process. You can't review a nomination in which you are named, of course. μηδείς (talk) 03:36, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all of the info. I have never been involved with the DYK process before, so I did not know any of this information. Thank you! Also, thanks for all the work you have been doing on the "Miami Cannibal" article. Great job! Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:45, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that this entry appeared on the "DYK" for today (June 15). Congrats on your efforts to get it posted at DYK! Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:54, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If only that gentleman hadn't changed the name of the article in the middle of its posting (and I not messed up changing it back) the number of hits would have been posted and we could easily have nominated it for the number of views. That can still be done, but it will take some hard work. I will follow up on it. μηδείς (talk) 23:03, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
