Resident Evil 6, known in Japan as Biohazard 6 (バイオハザード6), is an upcoming dramatic horror video game developed and published by Capcom. It is scheduled for release on October 2, 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and at a later date for Microsoft Windows.[3]

Gameplay

Resident Evil 6 will allow players to select between three scenarios with connected storylines. The player characters from each scenario will have their own partners in a similar fashion to previous games.[4] The game will have two primary enemies including the returning zombies and the newly introduced J'avo. Unlike zombies, J'avo are able to interact with each other to plan an attack, use weapons, and heal themselves. Also the game will allow players to be able to move around while shooting, an element largely absent from the previous games.[5]

Plot

In the year 2013, U.S. President Adam Benford has decided to officially reveal the truth behind the 1998 Raccoon City Destruction Incident, believing that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity.[6] Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy and his new partner Helena Harper; but when the venue becomes host to another bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face the infected and mutated President, making the hardest decision in his life. Meanwhile in the Eastern European state of Edonia, mercenary Jake Muller, the son of late bio-terrorist Albert Wesker, flees from the authorities during a bioterrorist attack. During Jake's adventure, he partners up with government agent and Raccoon City survivor Sherry Birkin. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance Captain Chris Redfield and his team, including B.S.A.A. member Piers Nivans, arrive in the fictional Chinese city of Lanshiang (based on Hong Kong), itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack.[7] With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear: there may be no hope left.[8]

Development

Concept development of the game began soon after the release of Resident Evil 5, and began full development in 2010. An official trailer was released on January 19, 2012.[9] On April 10, 2012, a second trailer was released which detailed the game's plot further, also revealed that the release date has been moved from November 20, 2012 to October 2, 2012.[10] At Microsoft's press briefing at E3 2012, the first gameplay demonstration was shown, depicting Leon and Helena fighting zombie hordes in China which included use of QTEs, demonstrated the use of evasive maneuvers and showed a glimpse of a revamped item storage system. The demo culminated in Leon and Helena falling through a glass roof, into the middle of a vast mass of zombies.

The development of the game is led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who is stated by Capcom to be aiming to "deliver the most impressive Resident Evil title ever both in terms of scope and production values." Capcom also noted that the game is meant to be "a giant stride forward in the evolution of the series."[11] In the updated trailer featuring introductions from the producers and director, the game has a development staff of more than 600, making it Capcom's biggest production to date.[12] In May 2012, Capcom announced they expect the game to sell 7 million copies by the ending of this fiscal year.[13]

A playable demo of Resident Evil 6 is currently scheduled for release on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace on September 5, 2012.[14] 60 days early access to the demo will also be included with the Xbox 360 version of Dragon's Dogma, granting owners access on July 3, 2012.[14]
