Varun Dhawan (born 24 April 1987)[1][2] is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films. In 2012, Dhawan made his debut in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, which emerged as a box-office commercial success.[3]
Early life
Varun Dhawan was born to film director, David Dhawan and his wife, Karuna Dhawan. He is the younger brother of director Rohit Dhawan, who made his directorial debut with the 2011 film, Desi Boyz. He has mentioned that he wanted to become a wrestler when he was a child. He studied at Bombay Scottish School Mahim & had secured 84.6% in tenth grade.He is well known for his strong sports background. He has a degree in business management from Nottingham University, UK.
Career
Early Work (2010-2011)
Prior to his acting debut, Dhawan worked as assistant director to Karan Johar on his 2010 film, My Name Is Khan.
Debut & Breakthrough (2012–present)
In 2012, Dhawan made his debut in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year alongside Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt.[4] His performance and dancing skills was appreciated with film critic Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama who stated, "Varun is excessively talented, supremely confident and hardly look like first-time actor. Photogenic, charming and self-assured,shine in his respective role, enact his part with gusto. Varun is a talent one can't help but marvel at. In fact, Varun is here to stay!"[5] Similarly CNN-IBN film critic Rajeev Masand wrote, "It’s Varun Dhawan who stands out with a confident, charming turn, able to tackle both comical and vulnerable scenes with ease".[6] Film critic Komal Nahta commented, "Varun Dhawan does very well as the spoilt brat. Varun is the best dancer among all three."[7] Raedita Tandan from Filmfare wrote, "Varun has done his best not to seem like newcomer and emerges triumphant. Varun is charming his brilliant dancing skills deserve a special mention. He makes confident debut."[8] The film was released on 19 October 2012 in over 1400 screens across the country and garnered positive to mixed reviews from critics, and good box office collections.
Varun Dhawan's next film, titled Main Tera Hero, is a remake of a Telugu blockbuster film, Kandireega. The film will be produced by Ekta Kapoor's production house, Balaji Motion Pictures.[9] The project will be directed by his father, David Dhawan, and Varun will play a musician yet again.[10] In preparation for his role, he enrolled in singing classes.[11] Main Tera Hero is scheduled to release in 4 April 2014. He has also been signed by Saif Ali Khan's production house, Illuminati Films, to do a film directed by Sriram Raghavan.[12]He is also confirmed for Karan Johar's next production Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania opposite Student of the Year co star Alia Bhatt[13] and Mohit Suri's next.[14]
Personal life
In March 2013, Varun broke up with long term girlfriend, Natasha Dalal.[15] Varun has also been rumored to be dating Student Of The Year co-star Alia Bhatt, but there has no official confirmation of these reports.[16] As of February 2013, Media Speculation indicates a relationship with South Indian Actress Taapsee Pannu.[17]
Other Work
In February 2013, Varun performed at the Wassup Andheri Fest.[citation needed] On 22 March 2013, Varun walked the ramp for designer Manish Malhotra at the Lakme Fashion Week, alongside fellow actors Sidharth Malhotra and Ayushmann Khurrana. Manish's collection was a tribute to 100 years of Indian Cinema.[18]He also appeared in a Coca-Cola ad alongside fellow actors Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. He has also starred for a We Chat ad along with Parineeti Chopra.
