Template:Infobox television Amazing Race The Amazing Race 24 (also known as The Amazing Race: All-Stars) is the twenty-fourth installment of the reality television show The Amazing Race. It features eleven teams of two returning competitors in a race around the world.

The season premiere aired on February 23, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. ET[Note 1]/PT on CBS.[1]

Production

Development and filming

The UCLA Bruin Marching Band performed at the starting line for this "All Stars" edition of The Amazing Race.[2][3]

The season will travel 35,000 miles through four continents in nine countries including China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Italy.[4][5]

Cast

This season's 11 teams are selected from past contestants, going as far back as Season 14. This includes seven contestants competing for a third time.[4]

The returning teams and their prior race placements are:

  • From Season 18, "Unfinished Business":
  • From Season 20:
  • From Season 21:
    • Natalie and Nadiya Anderson, twin sisters, 4th place
  • From Season 22:
    • Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Kuhle, friends and country singers (formerly of Stealing Angels), 4th place
    • Dave and Connor O'Leary, father and son, 8th place
    • Jessica Hoel and John Erck, engaged (dating in season 22), 9th place
    • Joseph "Joey" Graceffa and Meghan Camarena, best friends and YouTube vloggers, 5th place
  • From Season 23:
    • Leo Temory and Jamal Zadran, cousins, 4th place
  • Composite Team:
    • Mark Jackson, 5th place in Season 20 and Mallory Ervin, 3rd place in Season 18 (6th place in her original appearance in Season 17). Jackson originally planned to compete with his Season 20 teammate William "Bopper" Minton. However, the night before the start of the race, Minton was diagnosed with pancreatitis and deemed unfit to race by the production's medical team. To replace him, Ervin was invited to compete as Jackson's teammate. On air, the new team was dubbed "Team Kentucky" in reference to Jackson and Ervin's home state.

Leg 1 (United States → China)

In Guangzhou, teams traveled to Canton Tower and rode its ferris wheel to search for their next clue.

Airdate: February 23, 2014[7]

This Leg's Roadblock required the racer to dress in a special costume and perform 5 aerial somersaults while suspended 300 feet (91 m) in the air by wires attached to the stadium's towers.

Additional tasks
  • At the start of the race, teams had to find one of several of the UCLA Bruin Marching Band members with the Chinese symbols for Guangzhou (广州) on their shako's badge (matching the badges displayed on the shakos of the band conductors), and bring the band member back to the starting line to be confirmed by host Phil Keoghan. Once a team brought a band member with the correct shako, Keoghan gave them a set of tickets for one of two flights to Guangzhou.
  • Before leaving Los Angeles International Airport, teams had to park their Ford Fusion Energi hybrid cars that they used to drive to the airport in a recharging station.
  • On arrival in Guangzhou, teams went to its wedding boutique district on Jiangnan Avenue North, and searched for one of three boutiques that had their next clue. Each store had a limited number of clues, forcing teams to travel to the others if they ran out.
  • The clue from the bridal shops directed teams to find "the building with the bubbles on top", giving them a replica "bubble", leaving them to figure out it referred to Canton Tower.
  • At Canton Tower, teams had to select one of the bubble cars of the ferris wheel located at the top of the tower and search for their clue, which would be revealed when the door to the car closed, forcing the teams to wait for the car to make a full trip around the building (about 30 minutes)[8] before they were allowed to exit and proceed. Depending on which car they entered, the clue either informed teams to try again in another ferris wheel car or directed them to their next location: Haixinsha Stadium below the tower.
