The Cube is a triple BAFTA Award–winning British game show which first aired on ITV on 22 August 2009. Presented by Phillip Schofield, it offers contestants the chance to win a top prize of £250,000 by completing challenges from within a 4m × 4m × 4m Perspex cube. The show is based on the idea that even straightforward tasks become extremely challenging when confined and put under pressure in front of a large live studio audience. Once inside, contestants can feel both claustrophobic and disorientated. Using "state-of-the-art filming techniques", the show aims to demonstrate the intense anxiety which contestants undergo as they progress through each task. Colin McFarlane provides the disembodied voice of The Cube, who explains the rules of the games.[1][2]

Format

All the games take place inside The Cube. Contestants are set a task to complete which can range from testing their mental agility, physical ability, intelligence, observation, and response. If they successfully complete the task, they will move up the money ladder. Each contestant begins with nine lives. Each time a contestant makes an unsuccessful attempt at a game, one life is lost and the contestant must repeat the game until successful. Any contestant who runs out of lives while attempting a game is "Defeated" by The Cube and loses all the money he or she accumulated to that point. (This rule does not apply in Celebrity versions of the show where if defeated the Celebrity leaves with £1000 for their chosen charity.) Contestants may stop before attempting a game from Game 2 onwards and take the money they have won but once a contestant decides to play, he or she cannot change their decision. With the exception of five episodes (three of which are celebrity specials), each episode has featured two contestants.

Filming

Objective Productions first approached Channel 4 in 2008 with the format. It was made into a non-televised pilot by the channel,[3] and was hosted by Justin Lee Collins. Channel 4 eventually decided not to commission the show because it would have been too expensive.[4] In February 2009, ITV purchased the rights to the show and filming began during April 2009 at Wembley's Fountain Studios. The Cube is one of the first shows to use the game freeze filming technique on a frequent basis, such as when a contestant jumps. This is Time slice. Using specially designed cameras, it allows the viewer to see one side of the Cube before the action is frozen, spun to another face of the Cube and then resumed. Slow-motion shots are again common to show action replays of the task a contestant just completed, or the critical moment of a game, to heighten the excitement of whether the contestant will succeed or fail. The show makes extensive use of CGI to project images onto the walls and ceiling of the Cube, while a screen on the floor is also capable of showing images. These film techniques make the seemingly simple tasks that are put before the contestants seem much more exciting than they would normally be.

For Series 8, which premiered on 1 March 2014, the show received a revamp. Including a new studio set, new opening credits, a redesign of graphics and several new games. The 7 game format and prize money structure however remain the same.

Prize Money

The Cube has a prize money structure starting at £1,000 and ending at the £250,000 jackpot. Below is a breakdown of the Prize money structure, showing the game number and amount of prize money that can be won for successfully completing that game. If a player loses all their lives at any point during the game they lose all the money they have accumulated to that point.

Stage Amount
Game 1 £1,000
Game 2 £2,000
Game 3 £10,000
Game 4 £20,000
Game 5 £50,000
Game 6 £100,000
Game 7 £250,000

Aides

The Cube offers each contestant two different "aides", each of which may be used only once by the contestant.

Simplify
Available from Game 1. As the name would suggest using this will make a certain game easier for the contestant to complete. Examples of Simplifies include adding extra time to a game, making a target bigger, Or removing certain aspects from games. All games can be simplified although we have not seen it on several games. The Simplify will remain in effect for all the contestants attempts at the game until the contestant completes it or is defeated by The Cube.

Trial Run
Available from Game 2. They also have the aide of a Trial Run. It gives the contestant a chance to attempt the game without any consequences. If successful, the contestant can choose to replay the challenge during regular game-play to progress to the next game. However, if the contestant fails to complete the game, they will not be penalized for it. Like the Simplify, it may only used once.

Information
Although not an official aide for the contestant, The host may offer the them certain information. This generally takes the form of providing the player with statistics about the game they are about to face. The information includes on average the number of lives it takes for players to win the game, the percentage of people that completed the game on their first try, or whether one certain group of people (e.g. men or women) are better at the game than another. This can help the contestant decide if they attempt to play a game or not.

The Body

Before each game, there is a short demonstration by "The Body", a masked female character described as "an expert at all games played within the Cube". Her demonstrations show the contestant and audience how the games are played.

Games

When The Cube was first produced, 50 games were designed. However, new games have been added every series in order to challenge contestants with games they have not seen before and refresh the format. Around 130 different games have been created and played in The Cube, below is a list of these games.

The games are in alphabetical order. With each game is information on the rules of the game, the cash level it was first played at and what happens if a contestant chooses to Simplify the game. Also listed is any other cash level the game has been played at, along with any rule changes or Simplify changes that may occur at a higher or lower cash level.

A to D

Accelerate

  • Introduced at: Game 3 - £10,000.
  • Game Rules: When the player presses and holds the button a ball will be released down a steep track, and a pair of pins further down the track will retract. They must guess when the ball is between the pins and release the button to raise the pins and trap the ball. If the ball is not trapped a life is lost.
  • Simplify Rules: Using the Simplify increased the distance between the pins by 50%.
  • Also Played at: Game 2- £2,000

Angular

  • Introduced at: Game 3 - £10,000.
  • Game Rules: The player must roll the ball so that it bounces against the two pads which make it travel along the raised Z-shaped platform and fall into the container at the end of it. The player loses a life if the ball falls off the sides of the platform or does not make it into the container. The player must release the ball within the red play zone at the start of the Z-shaped platform.
  • Simplify Rules: Unknown. Game Never simplified.
  • Also Played at: Game 4 - £20,000.

Anomaly

  • Introduced at: Game 1 - £1,000.

For this final challenge The Cube will bring back a game the contestant has previously attempted but at a Jackpot level difficulty.

  • In the first series, Jonny became the first person to reach the final game, having only three lives left. For his final game, he was given a more difficult version of Direction, the first game he faced in The Cube, losing three lives and using his Simplify. At the jackpot level, the path was reduced by a third to just 20 centimeters. He decided to leave with £100,000.
  • In the second series, Paul became the second person to reach the final game, having five lives left. For his final game, he was given a more difficult version of Structure, in which he had to build a construction of blocks within a time limit of twelve seconds, three seconds less than his original attempt. He also decided to leave with £100,000.
  • In the third series, Tom Fletcher of boyband McFly managed to reach the final game, having four lives left. For his final game, he was given a more difficult version of Barrier, in which he had to cross three barriers instead of the original two. He also decided to leave with £100,000.
  • The fourth person to get to the final game was Luke who was given a more difficult version of * Rebound. When Luke previously took on this game he only lost one life. At the jackpot setting the target zone the ball had to land in was reduced by 50%. He chose to leave with £100,000.
  • In a fifth series Celebrity special, Mo Farah, Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metre runner, managed to not only reach the final game but also became the first person to attempt the jackpot game. For his final game, he guessed that Response would be his final game but was given a more difficult version of Barrier instead, in which he had to cross three barriers instead of the original two, which he had previously beaten on his first attempt. Starting the final game with seven lives left (he had lost two lives in his first game Response). He won £250,000 only losing one more life in this jackpot game. Mo is currently the only contestant, celebrity or member of the public, to win the Jackpot and "Beat The Cube".
  • In series six, episode 4, Kevin became sixth person to reach the final game. The Cube brought back Descent at the Jackpot setting with a Target area 50% smaller than he had previously faced. Kevin had 6 lives remaining as well as his Simplify (Kevin is so far the only person to reach the final game with his Simplify still available.) Although very tempted due to the strong position he was in, Kevin chose to leave with £100,000.
  • In a Series 8 Celebrity special broadcast on 28 June 2014, Mollie King of The Saturdays became the seventh person to reach the jackpot game. The first person to do so in 2 series. Mollie said she would like to see the game she had just faced for £100,000, Balance brought back. However The Cube brought back the game she didn't want to see and had previously used her Simplify on, Capacity. At the jackpot setting, Mollie had just 20 seconds to complete the game. Although her band mates were confident she could complete it due to having 5 lives remaining, Mollie decided she couldn't risk it and left with £100,000 for her charity.
