Hi Matthew, |
|||
Thanks for your quick review of the initial draft. I guess copying and pasting from Ewan's web site probably wasn't the most objective way of creating a page for him. I've taken your comments on board and stuck to verifiable facts and opinions of reliable sources, providing references back to the original source. Ewan and I will probably fill in more detail once the page is established (I've asked him for his date of birth for example), but we will stick to the principles of your rejection comments. |

Thanks for your help, |

Occupy Democrats submission
Hello Matthew, I added several links from publications (Philadelphia Magazine) and the David Pakman Show that featured the Raise the Minimum Wage campaign, the who, what, when (with source). They should be a big help proving the notability and relevance of the Raise the Minimum Wage Campaign by Occupy Democrats.
review of new page on European School in Central Asia
Hi Matthew Thank you for your quick review and response. I have now edited the page and resubmitted taking account of your helpful comments, so I tried to removed details that only students/parents would want to know, I tried to rewrite or leave parts that show the individual significance of this school from the perspective of an outside observer. No doubt more editing is required and I welcome your feedback. David1000000 (talk) 05:13, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello David1000000, we had an error there for a second where both you and I were trying to clean up the article at the same time. In any case, a few comments:
- Have you read the School Article Guidelines I linked at top? Definitely do so before proceeding if you haven't.
- Please take a quick glance at WP:Wikilinks (how to make those clickable blue links) since you don't appear to be using those. Do not link to outside websites for things not immediately pertinent to the ESCA; for example, do not link to an outside website about the "Cambridge curriculum" or whatnot. It's okay to wikilink to other Wikipedia articles, but the only links outside within the main body of the article should be WP:Footnotes to works that specifically discuss ESCA.
- At my last glance, you still have way too much stuff not of interest to general readers, like pricing schemes, phone numbers, how the board makes decisions, etc. As a broad hint, if there's a Fact X about the school, and no outside source such as a news article, book, etc has mentioned Fact X, that probably means our readers don't care about Fact X either.
- This page is not a place for ECSA to advertise itself. Period, full stop. Anything resembling advertising will cause the article to be Declined. What I suggest you do is find as many news articles, mentions in books, etc. that you can (in any language), and begin footnoting those in to support any facts about ECSA.
- Other than very basic non-controversial facts (founding date, location, etc), if you cannot source a given fact to an outside, objective source, that probably means you need to remove said fact, since evidently only people involved with the school have bothered to make note of said fact.
- Hello David1000000, we had an error there for a second where both you and I were trying to clean up the article at the same time. In any case, a few comments:
- Does all this make sense? We only care about things outsiders care about, this cannot just be a place for the school to talk about itself. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:28, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Matthew. Thank you for this excellent advice. I will get back to working on the draft later today. I am sorry about the live page, which I uploaded before I got your feedback on the draft. I am new to this editing and still trying to make sense of how it works. I will stick to working on the draft and resubmit for your review after editing as you suggested. Thank you for the changes you have already made which are a great improvement on my previous version. David1000000 (talk) 06:39, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hey David1000000, no worries. All this takes getting used too. Just stick to Draftspace and take your time, read any suggested guidelines folks recommend. Just keep patient, take constructive criticism, and things should work out. That's no guarantee that every draft will publish, but by working the process you can ascertain viable topics, polish them up, etc. I just strongly caution you from any attempt to advertise the school (see WP:Conflict of interest), and focus on outside commentary on the school. If there is no outside commentary yet, then the school does not yet meet our benchmark WP:Notability, and is not yet ready for an article. In the short term, please gather up any serious media mention of this school, in any language, and place it in the References section for the moment. MatthewVanitas (talk) 06:44, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Matthew, I finally got time to make some changes. Thank you for giving a better structure to the whole article. I accepted most of your deletions but cut down the governance issues to a new section on governance. Although I still have not found an external reference for this, the governance of the school is a key notable issue since this is not a typical private school or part of a larger group. I see that as part of WikiProject Schools and WikiProject Kyrgyzstan we need some leeway on the references since this is not a part of the world covered widely elsewhere. I will create an infobox based a standard school template, so the editing is not yet complete. David1000000 David1000000 (talk) 10:54, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Matthew, I have added an infobox and made all the improvements I can at this stage. I think it now follows the Schools Article Guidelines. I await your feedback following review. David1000000 — Preceding undated comment added 10:36, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Graves submission
Thanks for your feedback on the O.E.L. Graves submission I made.
> ... Graves seems to have been written about as an artist enough.
I must be doing something wrong, as I have found almost nothing on O.E.L. Graves on the Internet, especially biographical and personal information, despite a lot of research. As a result, there is almost nothing to cite as reference. My hope was that getting a Wikipedia entry started would encourage anyone with information to contribute it.
> The problem is sourcing. Firstly, you cannot link to scanned images of articles. Firstly, it implicates Wikipedia in copyright violations. Secondly, in theory you could just be making said articles up.
That is the only source I have for that information. What else can I do? It is so much better to show what little we have than to deny the public any information. A flawed source is better than none when dealing with someone so poorly documented. For all we know, everything written about Graves in that Palm Springs Life magazine was made up, even if properly cited. Let the information be disputed, or ask readers for the missing information (like the article date that was missing) or a better reference. We are doing detective work here, from my perspective. I've been searching for any information I can find on Graves, and I'm laying everything I've found on the table here. Isn't that what an encyclopedia is for?
> Secondly, make sure you're sourcing serious media/academic sources. That does not count commercial gallery blurbs, photos of his work (also a copyright violation), etc.
Who decides what is "serious", or what constitutes "media" or "academia"? I am simply citing where my information comes from. The quality and veracity of that information is something I have no control over. My references to commercial galleries were to prove Janet Gaynor had an extensive collection of Graves' work that she sold. I wasn't citing any "blurbs" about Graves from those sites.
If the owner of a Graves painting takes a picture of it and posts it online, is that a copyright violation?
> I found nearly a dozen serious news articles about him.
Did you actually go to the links and read them? I have yet to find one serious news article about Graves online. Please send me just a few of those links, and I would be delighted (assuming I haven't already seen them)!
> Go through your draft and add serious footnote to everything you can, and remove anything you can't back up with a footnote.
I think if I did that, there would be nothing of interest on O.E.L. Graves left. That's fine by me, if you just want to have a stub of a Wikipedia article for O.E.L. Graves. I was trying to make it more interesting for the reader, using the information I found interesting from all the research I did on Graves. Can't we do a "disputed" entry to get the ball rolling? Seriously, I haven't found squat on Graves. Most of my information is coming primarily from two people -- Jack Midling who I mentioned at the end of the article (who is quite old and in a retirement home), and the owner of Graves' favorite painting that Graves refused to sell to Winthrop Rockefeller. That owner bought the painting from Jack Midling decades ago after Graves died, along with a collection of pictures and information on Graves that Midling had collected as part of his business.
I can prep a stub on Graves with no references, but even then I'm not sure I can reference his real name or birth/death dates if I exclude commercial gallery blurbs or have to rely on "serious media/academic sources".
There's very little out there on Graves, which is precisely why a Wikipedia article is so important. Did you see this link?
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006011704231
My experience has been the same as the person inquiring who couldn't find info on Graves. Even nine years after the question was posted, there are only commercial gallery blurbs referenced and the one website the painting owner posted, which is the most extensive source on Graves available by far that I have seen, but apparently it can't be referenced on Wikipedia because of photocopied articles.
You've got me almost bound and gagged when it comes to O.E.L. Graves. Somehow, that doesn't seem like much of a service to the inquiring public from Wikipedia.

Hi, thank you very much for accepting the English version of Hossein Shahshahani. I appreciate your support and dedication. As I saw the created page, I noticed that a section listing the References has been omitted. Not sure if you felt the Footnotes are adequate or perhaps the References were inadvertently dropped.
Best regards, Axshah95 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Axshah95 (talk • contribs) 10:30, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Axshah95, are you referring to the References which were identical to the Footnotes? If so, I removed them because they were repeated/redundant. If you're referring to the list of External Links, it was a large list of vague connection to the subject, whereas ELs are generally supposed to be a very small list immediately tied to the subject, like a person's homepage, etc. Not simply a list of other things tangentially related to their career.
- Your article seems decent, but you had a lot of really weird coding errors, mostly odd wikilinks mistakes like trying to put
http://Tehran&&&&
(which creates nothing but a failed link), instead of simply[[Tehran]]
which makes Tehran, nice and easy. So for any next articles, please make sure you glance at WP:Wikilinks to understand how to link properly. Nice work overall on the translation. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:45, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Matthew, i would just like to find out about Notability for artists and how that works. What is required? Do i perhaps have to add references for articles where the artist is mentioned etc.? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jarryd T Wood (talk • contribs) 12:22, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Notability of schools
According to Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Common_outcomes#Schools and my experience, all schools offering the secondary grades that can be verified are considered notable, even without extensive coverage in reliable sources. The assumption is that the coverage almost certainly exists, even though it may not be included in the article. I mention this in the context of the AfC submission about the international school in Kyrgyzstan. Eastmain (talk • contribs) 12:23, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Information on a particular subdivision
My entry was rejected but I was going on the examples of ones that are similar that were accepted. I'm not trying to make this an advertisement but a general information about this community,. this is where I got my examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacoa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_Club_at_Mirasol Can you tell me what I did wrong if these are accepted? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Evergrene_Country_Club_Community Thanks Personalseo (talk) 18:04, 14 October 2014 (UTC)Tammy
- I certainly would not use either of those linked examples as a standard, both are very poorly sourced, use advertising language, etc. I've proposed that both of those be deleted since they appear to serve little purpose other than to advertise the communities.
- So far as yours, the issue is that you're not meeting the guideline WP:Notability (click here for 10-second version: WP:42). That is, you're not showing that anybody not tied to the club finds it worth writing about. If nobody else on the planet finds the place worth writing about other than those that live there or make money off it, why should our readers care? What's more, how could we expect any WP:Neutrality from such involved people?
- As it stands now, most of the article is stuff that only a customer would want to know, like As a resident in the Evergrene community, club membership is mandatory. Members are billed club dues and POA maintenance fees established by the annual operating budget. The Evergrene Master Association manages the entire community. However, the luxury condos, known as The Mansions East and Mansions West, are governed by specific condominium associations.. That does nothing to explain to a reader what makes this enclave distinctive, or worth reading about a century from now.
- You might have some argument if people have widely written about the green-ness of the complex. If for example it were a pioneer in greening/environmentalism, such that we could squint and imagine that in the year 2114 someone writing a book about green buildings might say "looking back to 2014, there was this place called Evergreen that's a great example of this concept..." That sort of thing.
- If it's written anything resembling an "About Us!" page, advert, etc., it can't publish. If however it has facts that are of enduring interest (stands out somehow for economics, environment, biz practices, unusual history, etc), then you can add those facts and cite them to Neutral info sources. Make sense? MatthewVanitas (talk) 23:49, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Matthew, I do understand yes. My only question is why do the other communities in this area get away with similar entries? They are nothing special either. This community does seem to have the unique Audubon award and it's set on a preserve which none of the other communities do. Also, I have been in contact with the manager of the community getting information directly from her. I don't know how to cite this as a resource since it's first hand knowledge and not an online source.
I do understand the goal to provide something someone would want to research years from now, but again, I'm confused why similar communities get away with it? There are numerous similar subdivisions with less information than I provided, like Abacoa and others in the area. Are they providing something I am not? Thanks for your help.
Personalseo (talk) 14:19, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Tammy
- Both of the other articles are pretty bad; I proposed deletion of both, but the admin said that as "geographical locations" they might technically be inherently WP:Notable. I'm arguing the case with admins now that these should be held to the standards for businesses, not towns.
- In any case, the big answer to your question is WP:Other stuff exists; that is, just because there are sub-par articles somewhere on WP isn't a good reason to produce more sub-par articles. The point of AFC is to make articles as strong as possible before launching, since a huge proportion of first-time articles are deleted. You've asked reviewers for their opinions, we're providing them based on Wikipedia guidelines.
- Re your question: Also, I have been in contact with the manager of the community getting information directly from her. I don't know how to cite this as a resource since it's first hand knowledge and not an online source. . The answer there is WP:No original research. If it isn't clearly documented in a published product, it is not usable. Personal knowledge, unofficial interviews, etc are not admissible, otherwise just anyone could say "yeah I talked to the owner and he said X" and we'd have no way of verifying it other than every single curious reader having to phone them directly. So I would really avoid talking to the owners for content. I mean even if you're a paid PR writer, there's no point getting anything from them that's not published works since it's non-citeable. If they want to point out their press-clippings (not PR pieces or ads) to you that's one thing, but word-of-mouth is inadmissible.
- Hope this helps, and in general if you see blatant advertising on Wikipedia, feel free to remove advert language, add the "advert" warning at top, or propose it for deletion. Your vigilance in preventing other companies from spamming is appreciated. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:52, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
I understand. Thank you for the clarification. Personalseo (talk) 16:19, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Tammy
- No worries; Mirasol is still a mess, but I just did a 10-minute cleanup on Abacoa, and now it's generally decent. Take a look and note the difference, with citations to third-party experts, removing promotional fluff, etc. Note too the downside to a company putting up a WP article; unlike a corporate page, a company can't control a Wikipedia article, so if there is interesting bad news it will invariably end up in the article. For Abacoa, I noted that it had brisk home sales, but trouble filling in retails spaces, which I'd expect Abacoa's owners would rather not publicize, but tough tiddliwinks, it's a documented fact of objective interest, so I added it. Do my upgrades to Abacoa make a little clearer what I'm saying? If you can write something kinda like that, with proper footnotes, that would pass AFC no problem. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:51, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Ok Great. I will use that as my template. Yes, I'm not a company but I do write a lot about this community and when I search I never see it in WikiPedia so I thought I would make my own page. I don't care about bad PR, that's part of the general information. No rules as to Equal Housing Etc.. here. Lay it all out. Again, I really appreciate your help on this matter.
Personalseo (talk) 16:56, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Tammy
- Sounds good, Personalseo, glad I could help. If you're local to the area, some good amateur photos would really spruce the article up. Some real slice-of-life stuff, give a feel for the area. MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:07, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

- Ummmmm, how about I reply when I feel like it and I have the time. That work for you?
- In any case, you're disagreeing with me because you haven't read up on Wikipedia rules. We don't cover things based on statistical popularity, we cover them based on coverage. I strongly advise you read our basic summary of the absolutely fundamental Notability guideline. Minecraft itself obviously meets Notability, but that doesn't mean every page of someone's opinions and stories about it do. Please read that page, and it'll make all this clearer. - Look buddy, your draft does not meet our core requirement of WP:Notability. I don't know how I can say that any clearer. I don't care if it gets 10,000 hits per day, it's not appropriate material for Wikipedia. Unless serious gamer media, news articles, etc start eagerly writing about "Entity 302", then Wikipedia does not care about it because it's not yet a Notable issue. If you create it in articlespace, I can guarantee you it will be deleted by WP:New page patrol. If you recreate it, they'll delete it again. If you keep it up, they can block any accounts and IPs associated with the article, and set filters to automatically prevent any new articles on the topic. So please be mature and don't offer clever little "threats" that you're going to force through this article.
- There are a zillion websites for Minecraft fans; if 302 is so important, why not write about it there instead? MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:46, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Man's Gin wikipedia page
Hello Matthew- I resubmitted my article on the band Man's Gin, and I'm wondering if this draft will be published. Mathew saheb, I thank you for accepting Panchashikha and Mashafi. I have just now recast Agni to make it readable and purposeful to what extent I do not know. Kindly oblige me with your opinion and let me know what else is still to be done.Aditya soni (talk) 11:06, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Aditya soni, you've done good work on sourcing your articles (an absolutely vital skill many neglect), so that makes them easy to approve. Regarding Agni, I would recommend the following:
- Note which sections lack sourcing, and apply proper footnotes. While English is preferable on en.wikipedia, if a given fact is only/better attested in works in other languages, feel free to cite those as well. Note that with any GoogleBooks source you can instantly turn the URL into a footnote using http://reftag.appspot.com
- For the lengthy list of names, consider using WP:Columns coding to get them to list in column to take up less space
- I would submit the use of the name for the rocket is Notable, but that the use of the name in videogames is not signficicant enough to be in the article, so I would remove the video-game information at bottom.
- Thank you for your diligence in working to improve India topics on Wikipedia! Have you yet introduced yourself at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject India? Participation in WikiProjects is entirely voluntary, but chatting with folks there may give you some chances for collaboration. Great work! MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:46, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Rejection of Self-Realization Riddle
Hi Matthew,
The riddle I had proposed has been rejected on the grounds that riddles are not published on Wikipedia.
But the riddle is not actually a riddle but a process to
begin self-realization in a person.
The more a person thinks about this riddle, the more self-realized he becomes.
More-over the riddle is not yet complete and I had yet to add another set of riddles to complete the self-realization process.
So is it possible to publish this material if I give it the title 'Self-Realization Process'?
Or you would you like to make the decision when I complete my work?
Regards,
Your Friend,

- Hello Balram wiki user! What you are writing is fundamentally not an encyclopedia article. Your own musings on the topic do not an article make. I would encourage you to see out other publication venues which specialize in such materials. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:37, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
I respect and understand your views. An article of this nature perhaps belongs to a spiritual website. But the fact of the matter is that if one searches for words like 'Moksha', 'Mukti' and 'Enlightenment'..., the first result that shows up on the most popular search engine is Wikipedia. I am not an authority on Self-Realization and may sound a bit mad but I am a self-realized person. That's how I realized what we are made of and that's how I realized that the entire world is made of good people. Hence this article. Wikipedia has many articles on processes like the article on glass making process which defines each of the steps. If we publish this article on Wikipedia, the entire world can improve it by their own realization of the process. Hi Matthew,
thank you for your feedback! I understand you mentioned that the Gallery Arcturus draft does not meet Wikipedia's rules for notability. I would like to point out three things that do meet Wikipedia's rules. The gallery owns several sculptures from the Inuit sculptor Floyd Kuptana whose works are held at the National Gallery of Canada (I will have to check on that but 98 percent sure I'm right about that). The gallery owns many works by author and artist E.J. Gold. Gold's works are extensively documented and his Wiki page is quite clear. Would it help if I asked both artists to add Gallery Arcturus to their Wiki pages? I live in the UK but have met them both. And finally the gallery received a short review from The Globe and Mail which is Canada's national newspaper and I have the website address which features this review. Please let me know if these three points are indeed notable. Thank you very much for your time Msheering21 (talk) 16:43, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

- Dude, again, WP:Notability. If no formal information sources (media, academics, etc) have recorded and commented on the 303 issue, then it is not a Wikipedia subject. There are plenty of places on the Internet to discuss Minecraft, but here we only discuss Minecraft issues that are significant enough to have been discussed by journalists or academics, like the social impact of the game, business model of the developers, etc. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:04, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Matthew,
"Generally political candidates do not merit their own Wikipedia article." However, this is not just any run of the mill candidate. I have searched Wikipedia, and have discovered that Wikipedia has another candidate from that same Primary race in 2012 with her own Wikipedia Page. Gloria Romero Roses was just a one-time political candidate. Not very notable and as little activism as Mr. Sternad. Mr. Sternad is notable in both South Florida politics and has had both local and national press coverage. Mr. Sternad's crime has set precedent for how Federal authorities are now treating/handing electoral crimes in not only South Florida, which is rocked by scandal after scandal, but also nationwide. As of recent, Mr. Sternad's name alone is being coined by both political parties as being synonymous with the term "straw candidate" and being used when describing certain types of political maneuvers. Mazzei, Patricia (October 13, 2014). "Insults fly between Miami GOP congressional candidate and former Republican foe". The Miami Herald Political Blog. Retrieved October 17, 2014. Please re-review. I can hardly see how Mrs. Roses, a one time candidate in the same race without any real notability herself merits having her own Wikipedia page and Mr. Sternad does not.

Dear MatthewVanitas, I send to You a new form, but please to help me to edit the famous writer's page (Erno Polgar)! Regards, Gyorgyne Pruzsinszki) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Györgyné Pruzsinszki (talk • contribs) 15:11, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Györgyné, you did good work greatly improving your formatting, and I cleaned it up a little further for you. The main issue right now is to work on WP:Sourcing
- Have you read WP:Notability (authors)? I strongly advise you do, as it explains the required level of sourcing to publish.
- You must show that other authorities (journalists, academics) have written about Polgar. Can you find news articles (in any language) discussing his career? Disussion of him in books about literature? We need to see that others have examined his career. Not simply that he has written books.
- While it is acceptable to just list references at the end, the article will be stronger with some footnotes; see WP:Referencing for beginners
- Other Wikipedia articles do not count as "Sources", so do not cite the Italian/German/Hungarian Wikipedias, we will just link to them at the end once this publishes. Note the other language versions are not well sourced, to the point they don't meet English Wikipedia standards. So don't necessarily use those as your models.
- Fundamentally, you must demonstrate that other people write about Polgar, and add those sources to the article for it to pass. You have a lot of facts in the article, but almost no evidence that any authority has recognized/documented those facts. Hope this helps! MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:04, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Would the Arise (musician) page be accepted as an actor page?
would the imdb reference be accepted if the Arise (musician) page were an actor page and not a musician one? If I just tweak it and omit the (musician) part? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.111.86.178 (talk) 22:10, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, IMDB is not citeable in general since it is crowdsourced (see WP:IMDB), so like Wikipedia it cannot be used as a source at all.
- You really need to read WP:Notability (people) and WP:Sourcing since you seem not to be getting some of our core requirements. You have a ton of facts on this page, everything from how she was in kindergarten and all. Any fact that you cannot source must be removed. That is, if you cannot provide a news article, magazine article, etc. which states those facts, Wikipedia cannot accept it. The only things you can source to her own website are non-controversial details like where born, what school, etc.
- Sources come first, so don't bother writing down anything you can't source. I would suggest you go find any news articles, magazine articles, etc you can about Arise, and past the links at the bottom of the page, and then we can continue from there.
- Note also, don't make footnotes by typing "[1]", etc. Instead use the coding shown at WP:Referencing for beginners. Let me know if you have any issues; hope this helps! MatthewVanitas (talk) 22:54, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

You suggest merging the Property page with the already existing Coffee House Positano page because they shared the same geographic space. The coffee house lasted only 5 years and was open to the public. The Property was a private residence that lasted 30+ years. To live there one had to be approved by Jerry Ziegman the manager. Combining a publicly available Bohemian coffee house with a private artist residence because they the arts Community occupied the space once held by the coffee house does not make sense to me. What is gained by combining the two? Is this mean I must do it?

Hi, I am new to Wikipedia so I am finding my way. I used the facebook pages as a reference, so you could see Novare Alliance have several divisions, we also have twitter but I was trying not to over do the links and I have never made a post like this before so I am still trying to find my feet.
I am the last remaining founder of the Novare Alliance (the other founder left due to getting married and moving away) and I work closely with Nichole who runs the Club/Organisation and Steven the Secretary. As a Club/Organisation, we are not required to, and there is no governing body, which we would be or could be registered with. Because of this, I can only offer the website which we run and the facebook and twitter links and feeds.
If you could instruct me on how we go about resolving this, I would be grateful and appreciate any and all help you can and would offer. As I previously stated, I am new to wikipedia and I would welcome the opportunity to learn.

- Hello Rob, first things first I strongly recommend you read our policy WP:Notability. The basic summary is:
Articles generally require significant coverage
in reliable sources
- That is, to have an article about a topic, you must demonstrate that totally uninvolved people, who are part of serious high-standard media (major news, peer-reviewed academic papers, etc), have found the issue worth writing about. If not, there absolutely cannot be an article about it on Wikipedia.
- The org's own page does not add to Notability, nor does Facebook, blogs, fansites, Tumblr, etc. It has to be a serious media source from a person/institution with a reputation to lose if they're wrong, who both verifies some basic facts about the subject, and also demonstrates that serious information experts find it a topic worth prioritizing. I strongly suggest you peruse our Notability policy, as meeting that is the absolite go/no-go criteria for having an article about the Novare Alliance. Kae Alexander
Hello Matthew,
Thanks for the review of my first submission (above). I understand what you're saying about my reference not showing enough notoriety, but I'm unsure what I can do. Another cast member from the same show, Nikki_Runeckles has no references and I based my submission on that entry. Despite appearing in this series, a couple of films and currently a West End Play (Tim Price's Teh Internet Is A Serious Business) I can't actually find may references to her. Would I be better off re-submitting with no reference?
Thanks for your time.
Jonoh68 (talk) 20:21, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Jonoh68. The article Nikki Runeckles is not an example to follow, and I have flagged it for review for possible deletion since we have a clear policy that WP:IMDB does not constitute evidence of WP:Notability.
- So far as there not being enough documentation about Alexander: if nobody is writing about her, than we have nothing to write about. The whole point of WP:Notability is that we document things uninvolved observers have said about people. If nobody is commenting on her other than IMDB, credits for the show, and amateur pages such as blogs, Facebook, etc., then we have nothing to write about. Either a) she's just not famous enough yet b) she rightly should be noted by the media but they're asleep at the wheel, but that's not Wikipedia's fault, so if she's worth writing about hopefully some journalist will realize what everyone's missing and break the story.
- Do not submit it, as a draft or as a live article, without sourcing, as then it absolutely won't meet WP:Notability and will not be accepted. If you haven't read WP:Notability, take a glance, it's pretty clarifying. There's also a quick 10-second version at WP:42 that's worth a quick look-see. Hope this helps clarify the guidelines.

New page for Father Joseph Vaudan and Agriculture Institute in Valle d'Aosta, Italy
I recently spent a week in Valle d'Aosta, doing research for an article about wine to submit to "Wine and Spirits" magazine. I did nine first-person interviews with vintners there who all credit Vaudan, as does the director of the agricultural institute in Aosta. May I cite these people with their business contact information?
```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slshochat (talk • contribs) 23:02, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Slshochat, nice work on the article! Good question, but the answer is that we do not accept WP:Original research. We can't cite things that are in your head, or in your notebook, or in the journal of someone living in an Italian town. We can only accept information that's been fact-checked and published, such as in a newspaper, peer-reviewed journal, etc. Now, if you happen to publish an article, wherein some authority figure signs off on the facts you've gathered, and they're now publicly documented, those you could quote, but you cannot cite unpublished or self-published work. If Wine and Spirits publishes your article, you can then cite it.
- One good thing you could do, if you're in contact with any folks in Aosta, is invite them to provide you any published resources on the topic. There are many good published things not yet on the internet, so if for example someone sends you a photocopy of a press clipping about Vaudan, with a clear publisher/date, you can cite that even though it's not digitally available. It's still a good source as long as it's published by a neutral authority and accessible to the public somewhere (i.e. not private papers or an archive. Hope this helps! AfCs
Like you, I am quickly looking over some of the new afc submissions in the hopes of dealing with some of the obvious ones that can be immedately approved or declined quickly (the very thought of the backlog is dispiriting). What I've additionally started in the last day or two is nominating some of the worst of the advertising ones for G11, instead or or in addition to declining them, such as Draft:Mike's Cigars. I think it sends a clearer message. (obvious it takes being selective, because the accepted tolerance for fixable promotionalism is a little greater in afc than article space) DGG ( talk ) 04:17, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello DGG; yes, that's been my preferred technique for some time now, weeding out the immediately terrible and the immediately good right in the first hours. The downside is it makes the 50-70% okay-ish articles wait longer, but at least it cuts down on bulk. I do wish, as I have repeatedly brought up for a couple years, that AFC could put the onus on submitters to move their drafts from "/sandbox" to a proper title, as that would save me a lot of hassle, but like a lot of suggestions to streamline AFC, it hasn't been done.
- Honestly, I'm thinking more and more that AFC needs to be done not in full Wikicode, so we can force people to use section headings, have a reflist, and prevent them from removing previous declines, starting new copies on the same topic, etc. Some more digital hand-holding would help. To one degree I wish there were even more of a "hammer to the forehead" instruction on "Seriously dude, are you sure you've provided sources which are reputable and unconnected with the subject????" but I supposed the current Wizard makes that point pretty clear but is routinely ignored in 70%+ of cases. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:53, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
- By not being done in full wikicode, do you mean, by using a fill in the box type of template? I've often thought it a good idea for many types of articles. The template can provide the code structure. Given the success of Wikidata, I think the idea is worth further development (and I think there are in fact some people working on converting Wikidata to articles). Otherwise, I think there is an advantage in not fussing too much about structure. I see no point in rejecting articles because of incorrect referencing format or subject headings or the like. These things are much easier to fix than to teach. Certainly anyone contributing regularly should learn, but if someone is going to contribute only one article, as is usually the case, why bother? There are hundreds of excellent wikignomes prepared to deal with all this, but who would rather not get involved in substantial writing of new articles.
- There's no point trying to communicate by formal messages. I see no indication that anyone reads them. I know my response in the RW to boilerplate is to ignore it, and so does everyone I know who is not professionally a lawyer. The way to do it to to give advice focussed sharply on the key major problem. There's no point in telling people they need better references when it's obvious the topic is hopeless and the only practical advice is to not work on it further.
- Given the commitment of the AfC maintainers to their unbelievably cumbersome procedures, I increasing am certain of my previous opinion there is only one sensible solution: eliminate the afc process, and use draft space only for true unsubmitted drafts. We would do better dealing with everything in one stream, in mainspace, where people could see them. We can't keep us as well in a fragmented system as if we had one single flow of material, and one where the wikiprojects could see their material from the start. DGG ( talk ) 22:49, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, people do tend to ignore boilerplate. I tend to use Custom a lot, often using the "big" template to put something like YOU HAVE TO SHOW US THAT UNINVOLVED PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT JOHN SMITH, NOT JUST THAT HE HAS A FACEBOOK PAGE. Things like that. It doesn't help that the boilerplate stuff is written in a really dry/technical fashion either. It might be vaguely better if instead of things written about boxes there was some pop-up or whatnot saying "DOES YOUR ARTICLE CLEARLY SAY WHERE YOU GOT THIS INFORMATION FROM?" and "YOU SAY THIS IS ABOUT A MOVIE; DOES YOUR DRAFT INCLUDE CITATION TO NEWSPAPERS, REVIEWS, ETC? NOTE THAT IMDB PAGE, DISCUSSION ON FORUMS, FACEBOOK, ETC. DOES NOT COUNT AND WILL NOT GET YOUR ARTICLE PASSED."
- @ DGG. The single-stream idea is appealing, but that would mean just letting folks launch stuff and letting NPP deal with it, and the whole idea with AFC as far as I understand is to prevent folks from publishing unusuable stuff (though maybe even on a valid topic), getting it deleted, and stomping off angry. In all honesty, I almost quit doing Wiki when I was new to it since one of my early article was about a guitar manufacturing firm founded in 1902 (Del Vecchio (guitar maker)), got CSD'ed three times in a row for Notability, and I nearly quit WP in disgust until I realized I had to click the word WP:Notability to see what the guidelines were. I then realized I was getting declined for lack of Sourcing, fixed it, and things were fine. I'm a tech-savvy guy in my 30s with an MA, and even I got frustrated at what seemed like boilerplate templates telling me my article was unwanted when I thought it was a great topic. - Wileywanda, did you read my comments in the large pink box at the top of User:Wileywanda/sandbox? Please let me know if you've read them, and if so which parts you would like clarified; "to understand more" is pretty broad, so please narrow it down. Wiki-draft - King Alfred School, Plön
Dear Matthew,
Please forgive me for not contacting you earlier. I am aged 70+ Wiki-novice and operating at the limits of my IT skills and am finding it difficult feeling my way around the Wiki-site. Please bear with me
I have just discovered that you have very kindly reformatted my second draft. It is looking good.
I noted that British Families Education Service and Milocarian Trophy appeared in red. Presumably the internal Wiki-links were invalid so I have replaced them with external website links in the mainbody. Please move them to the correct place.
I have also added some more information to the Information box some of which does not appear Please readjust size of box.
Finally is it possible to increase the size of the photo slightly.
Once again thank you so much for your help and cooperation in developing my Wiki-draft thus far.
Yours aye,Wyvern4859 (talk) 18:11, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Copyright violation?
Is it a copyright violation to reference in a Wikipedia entry on the artist O.E.L. Graves a picture of his most treasured painting that the current owner of the painting has freely posted on a public Internet website? Examples of an artist's important works seem quite appropriate and relevant to an encyclopedia entry concerning the artist when they are publicly displayed and publicly available.
--Chicodoodoo (talk) 03:24, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Chicodoodoo; I don't see a copyright notice on your Talk page so not entirely sure what the issue is; I'm also not a copyright expert, but my gut-guess would be that the copyright of a work of art doesn't not explicitly transfer with possession of the physical piece of art. And even if it does, simply because the owner has made it publicly available does not mean we can assume it to be Public Domain. For a piece of art to be displayed on Wikipedia, it has to be a) explicitly out of copyright per legal definition b) used in an article whose exact subject is the work of art itself under WP:Fair use, or c) the absolute uncontested copyright-holder has to send a WP:OTRS form to Wikimedia. Note c) doesn't mean "you copy-paste here an email from the owner saying it's okay to share it on Wikipedia", but rather it's an actual documented legal form. These rules aren't because we're jerks, it's because we're zealously protecting the legal rights of content creators. Hope this helps! MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:36, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
--Györgyné Pruzsinszki (talk) 08:50, 27 October 2014 (UTC) Dear my Friend! I Would like to put this Erno Polgar´s photo. Many thanks for advance. Regards, Györgyné Pruzsinszki P.S. Please to help me to put this photo! This photo belongs to Erno Polgar Györgyné Pruzsinszki (talk) 08:50, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Györgyné Pruzsinszki, we add photos after an article publishes, not before. So I'm deferring to a next editor's opinion. After the article publishes, then you can read WP:Images for how to upload; if you're unsure, please contact WP:Teahouse to get advice from volunteer mentors. But photos come after the draft publishes. MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:32, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Please help
Ok, so the editors don't feel that I am relevant enough to have an article, but I can't even have my own user page? What is happening? What am I doing wrong? I am new to Wikipedia, and find it extremely confusing, but I am doing my best to figure it out and follow the guidelines. Also, so, maybe no one cares about who I am, but I would like to at least have an article for my newly developed Three Player Chess game, called "Ch3Xs". It is already a part of the Three Player Chess article, and I feel it is at least notable enough to have an article explaining the rules and it's origin to anyone who might be interested. There are all sorts of other articles on Chess variants. Please help. Thank you Rue36 (talk) 17:13, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Rue36, the problem is that you're very clearly using Wikipedia for self-promotion. We want people to be here to help build an encyclopedia, not to be trying to use this as an alternate-Facebook. I took a draft at your draft autobiography, and it shows no indication that you meet (or have even read) our core policy WP:Notability. Adding links to your YouTube clips does nothing at all to build your argument, for example.
- So far as "maybe no one cares about who I am", the same can be said for your ChEXs variant. If nobody other than you has taken the trouble to write about it (trying to add it yourself into Three player chess doesn't count, and has been removed), then what case to we have to including it on Wikipedia?
- I'm not at all trying to talk smack about your work as an artist; you've had works published, sold games, etc. I'm not questioning those successes, nor the validity of your art in general. What I (and others) are doing is pointing out that you don't appear to meet WP:Notability, in that other authorities don't appear to be substantively discussing your work. That's not measure of your quality, just that we don't have anything to base an article on, per our rules, unless uninvolved people write about you. Maybe your game is the best chess variant ever, maybe your art will be world-famous in 10 years, but that's immaterial to Wikipedia until such point as we have outside coverage to cite.
- Don't focus on trying to get a WP:Tertiary source like an encyclopedia to cover your work before WP:Secondary sources (journalism, academia) have covered it; that's backwards of how information works. If you want fame, get academics or journalists to cover your work. Don't try to get clever hand-jamming it into an encyclopedia. Also, to be totally frank, if Person X is writing their own article, that's a pretty good indication they're not ready for an article. Noam Chomsky doesn't have to get on Wikipedia and write his own article, because his work is compelling enough and widely known enough that uninvolved people are eager to write about him.
- If you try to use Wikipedia for self-promotion, you're bound to be disappointed. Stick to working on your art and design, and promoting them in their proper scenes. If your work is good enough, it'll gain fame, and eventually someone you've never met will be eager to cover your work. Writing your own article is basically either cynical advertising, or a lack of faith in your ability to appeal to others. Stick to your art, and have faith in its effects. You state
"Comment: Why can this content not just be part of our existing article Coffee House Positano? It seems to be about the exact same topic, or aspect of the topic." My page on The Property is definitely NOT on the same topic. Hard to understand why you said that. Cofffee House Positano was a business open for 6 years - '57 - '62 where customers purchased food and drink and then could play chess, listen to music, watch a play and then go home. They could not go there twice and then they had to become a member. The Property on the other hand lasted 31 years and had no customers only residents and their friends. People had to be accepted to live there and some did so for 2 decades. The Property was never open to the public. The only thing the coffee house and the Property have in common is that the Property started after the coffee house closed and was located at the same place as the coffee house. Please explain why you think the two pages are about the same topic? I will not confuse people by combining the two pages.
Regarding GNRC's page
Hi,
As per your guidelines I have added a few more references to the content. The hospital is indeed 27 years old but off late it has come up with a new healthcare model and has set up new branches in the north eastern region of India hence the coverage is pretty recent. I request you to kindly approve the content as soon as it is possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PrateekLucifer (talk • contribs) 05:16, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Basanta Kishore Sahoo
The article Basanta Kishore Sahoo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Unable to find anything about him except on social links and sites that contain Wikipedia info
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bgwhite (talk) 05:33, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
New page for Father Joseph Vaudan and Agriculture Institute in Valle d'Aosta, Italy
Thank you so much for your patience and help. One more quick question: The top line heading of the article has a misspelling. It says "Joesph" instead of "Joseph". I can't figure out how to change it:-( ````slshochats```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slshochat (talk • contribs) 18:29, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Slshochat, see WP:Move for how to move pages to the correct title. I'd do it for you, but I figured it'd be good practice. ;) Whatever you do don't just copy-paste your current text into a page of a different name, just use the Move tool. Or if you don't yet qualify for the Move tool, let me know and I'll fix it. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:50, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
GNRC Hospitals Limited
Hi Matthew,
This is regarding GNRC's Wikipedia article. Just wanted to bring to your notice that GNRC is located in remote area of Guwahati. Over the last 2 decades the region hasn't had much of an access to internet. As far as citing old articles is concerned, they are all in regional languages like Assamese, Bengali etc which would be cumbersome for you to translate.
Thanks and regards
- Hello Aditya soni Saheb; which "list" are you referring to? The Bhatta articles should appear on your "My Contributions" list, linked at the very top of your Wikipedia screen, and the History tab of each page should show your involvement. MatthewVanitas (talk) 14:37, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Response about Sudbury school project
Matthew, You wrote to JasmineGarcia9000: "Is some Sudbury school doing Wikipedia articles as a class project? I'm seeing a lot of Sudbury drafts; has a school project recently been assigned in that town? If it has, can you have your teacher write me on my Talk page? There are some common mistakes a number of the articles are all making, and it'd be easier just to let the teacher know to tell the class rather than try to explain it to each student individually. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:56, 22 October 2014 (UTC)"
The answer is yes. I'm teaching an Exploring Web Communities and Social Networking class.
What are some of the common mistakes you are seeing? I would be happy to pass them along to my students.
Ewan McLennan
Hi Matthew, Thanks for your quick review of the initial draft. I guess copying and pasting from Ewan's web site probably wasn't the most objective way of creating a page for him. I've taken your comments on board and stuck to verifiable facts and opinions of reliable sources, providing references back to the original source. Ewan and I will probably fill in more detail once the page is established (I've asked him for his date of birth for example), but we will stick to the principles of your rejection comments. Thanks for your help, Dave (aka Naganata... don't ask)
