Fire service articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Fire service articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Sunday, November 14th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you have already provided feedback, we deeply appreciate it. For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 16:32, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2 fire event articles currently nominated for deletion.

1978 Holiday Inn fire and North Division Street explosion. Both articles are multiple fatality fires, but both articles could also certainly stand improvement and sourcing. Jclemens (talk) 04:07, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Featured article review Hamlet chicken processing plant fire

I have nominated Hamlet chicken processing plant fire for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Brad (talk) 09:33, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Plants Chaparall and Fire Task Force

WikiProject Plants Chaparall and Fire Task Force

WikiProject Plants Chaparall and Fire Task Force

Would anyone like to join me in starting a WikiProject Plants Chaparall and Fire Task Force, perhaps to be a joint project with the Fire Service project? Once there are five names above, we can start our task list. E.g., task 1- photo and upload to wikimedia commons images of all phases of chaparral fire cycle, and all seasonal phases and coloration changes (colors now being researched at the Stanford Department of Plant Biology Carnegie Institute for remote identification of specimens and their species), task 2 - make illustrations of chaparral anatomy and morphology across species which "makes it chaparral".

Sign your name in the quote box above.

I am working with UCSC's Arboretum director (and California Native Plant Society president) on a donation to them of a 10 acre real estate parcel with a approx 3500 foot elevation Sierra Azul maritime chaparral stand on it and surrounding it (his group's specialy), a riparian corridore through it fed by an artesian spring with the closest watershed being Yosimite (and a view of half dome in the far distance from the parcel) and will be going hiking in Griffith Park with Richard Halsey and some Hollywoodsters next time he is in Hollywood, if there are any super-esoteric questions you want me to hit them up on re maritime chaparral, Santa Monica Mountain Chaparral, or San Diego area chaparral, or if you want to join us and add your expertise. Category emptying

Looks like someone is systematically emptying subcategories in Category:Fires by year. Can some with more knowledge look into this and see it real fires are being removed from the subcategories? WP:CFD would be the correct place to empty categories. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:02, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Without specific examples, it's hard to tell. Do you know of an article that used to have a particular category that was removed? --Daysleeper47 (talk) 20:46, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ubx suggestions

This user is a Fireman.
(can be customized)

If editors would like I can tailor a new template for the Wikiproject Fire Service, similar to this userbox, which also may be useful to some members. Penyulap 00:46, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:FIRE and WikiProject Fire Protection

Hi all, I don't know if any of you have seen this RM about the differing destinations of WP:FIRE and WP:Fire, but an IP suggested your project would be a better destination for these redirects than WikiProject Fire Protection, which the former currently redirects. Since that project is semi-active, I think I agree. Does it make sense for you to merge with the project? There could be a unified WikiProject Fire, Fire Protection could be a task group within Fire Service, however it works out, this seems like a good idea in principle. --BDD (talk) 17:14, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox wildfire (update layout)

Hello. I was wondering if anyone in this project might be against an update of the Template:Infobox wildfire layout? No content would be changed, it would just be a conversion from the current raw wikitable-based coding to employ the metatemplate used by Template:Infobox. This results in a much neater and more compact infobox as you can check in this before and after examples. In case you agree, I would confirm individually that its implementation did not affected negatively any of its transclusions. Cheers! Parutakupiu (talk) 19:39, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Firewoman listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Firewoman. Since you had some involvement with the Firewoman redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). -- 70.50.148.105 (talk) 11:16, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Active members?

Any active members here? Would love some input on something. --Zackmann08 (talk) 21:34, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll help. What do you need? --WikiTryHardDieHard (talk) 01:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just trying to do some cleanup. I just redid the {{infobox fire department}} and would love some feedback on the new format. I am also looking into cleaning up the pages for different types of fire apparatus. For example, I think that Brush Truck & Wildland fire engine should be merged. At the very least both need some cleanup. I also wanted to try and clean up the {{Fire fighting}} template to include more stuff. Any feedback, help or ideas? I'm all ears! --Zackmann08 (talk) 02:16, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just some initial thoughts: I have only ever heard of "brush trucks" and have never heard the term "wildland fire engine". This is coming from a municipal firefighter. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the subject, but there are essentially two different worlds in American firefighting - wildland and structural. The federal government mainly covers the wildland side, and city fire departments cover the structural side. However, sometimes city firefighters have to fight early stage wildfires before the federal firefighters arrive. During this intial stage, a brush truck is used. These are relatively small, nimble vehicles with a small amount of water reserve. The federal firefighters arrive and use "wildland fire engines". These vehicles are larger and have a increased water supply for the extended period which they will be fighting the wildfire.
I think a merger would be beneficial, perhaps under the title Wildland Firefighting Apparatuses. This could include both types of vehicles, and should draw a clear distinction between the two.
I'll continue assessing possible revisions. --WikiTryHardDieHard (talk) 03:03, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I like your idea! I am somewhat new to the world of firefighting. I am an engineer by trade (computer, not the kind that rides in a fire truck. :-p ) Any who, I think you defiantly have the right idea. Put the two on one page with subsections. I'm out for the evening but I'll start working on that tomorrow. I'll probably do it in my user-space first. Have a good evening. --Zackmann08 (talk) 03:28, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Requested Photos

To all active members, let's work to improve photo propagation and proliferation across fire-service articles. Post here if you know of articles that could really benefit from a photo. I'll begin.

Collaboration with WikiProject Oregon?

WikiProject Fire Service participants are welcome to collaborate with WikiProject Oregon, which for the month of March is tasked with populating the category Fire departments in Oregon. See here for details, plus a list of fire departments in the state. Please consider jumping in and helping with our efforts to improve coverage of fire service in Oregon. Thanks so much! --Another Believer (Talk) 20:45, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This article is in need of a bit of a refurbishment, and some citations. If anyone who is good with this type of thing is around, please give it a go. RGloucester 17:34, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need additional eyes on an article

I need some additional eyes on the article May 2014 San Diego County wildfires and its talk page. This is a heavily-viewed article about a current wildfire situation, but there only appear to be two of us watching it. I particularly need help with a content dispute, discussed at the talk page. The other editor insists on adding "arson" to the "ignition sources" in the infobox, even though the article contains no mention of arson, and no reliable or official source has claimed that any of these dozen or so fires were started by arson. I think it's important that we get this right but I don't want to edit war. Someone knowledgeable please take a look, evaluate the evidence and arguments, and weigh in. Thanks. --MelanieN (talk) 20:34, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That content dispute has been resolved, but I would still appreciate some additional pairs of eyes on that article. --MelanieN (talk) 14:48, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Leaflet for Wikiproject Fire Service at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Expert attention

This is a notice about Category:Fire Service articles needing expert attention, which might be of interest to your WikiProject. It will take a while before the category is populated. Iceblock (talk) 03:31, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
