Speedy deletion of user pages
Hello, User:Wgolf – I wanted to reach out and ask you to rethink the vigor with which you refer user pages for speedy deletion. Logging into Wikipedia to find your user page has been speedily deleted without detailed explanation (besides "writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals, where the owner has made few or no edits outside of userspace") is not a pleasant experience, and does not feel welcoming to newcomers. My user page contained a number of ways to contact me or see my work in other places on the internet. I understand how that might be misconstrued as advertising, so I've since replaced it to just include my email address. I have definitely made more than a few edits outside of userspace.

I really like the way Wikipedia talks about deleting user pages.

<blockquote>Take special care to speak appropriately and explain the concern; many users will take it as a personal affront or attack if an unknown user announces they are going to delete a userspace image or page and an uncivil or heavy duty approach can discourage new users who are unaware of expectations and might enjoy contributing.</blockquote>

I think that Wikipedia is a really important resource and it will only continue to grow as long as it is a welcoming environment for new users as they learn to navigate editing. User pages are where most people start.

Other user pages you have nominated like this one contain no links, just autobiographical information – and I wonder what value there is in recommending user pages like this for removal? In cases like these, it seems to me any perceivable benefit of removing the page is negated by the fact you are likely to make a potential new user, editor, and supporter feel unwelcome.

We all have different knowledge about different things, and we are all learning. Some are not as familiar with the rules and expectations in complicated systems like Wikipedia. But please, please, understand that removing the personal page a user uses to represent themselves on a service feels very very discouraging and aggressive, and in my opinion should be a last resort.

I know for me it completely killed my motivation to keep learning about wikipedia editing practices and ways to contribute for a few weeks.

what was not constructive about it ?

Thalassery Raghavan

I agree there is little about him online but the fact is, that most of the work related pages are not online and his movies and literary works are done between 1970's to 2003 and they are in malayalam - south indian language, so kindly let me know where to post. Kindly allow me to edit and put full detail of him

Frank Crudele & Carlo Virzì

Thanks for your information, but i pray you do not delete Frank Crudele, and also Carlo Virzì. As i have written they are ONLY translated from Wikipedia Italy. I hope that my English language it is no too bad, but unsfortunely i do not know in which way to add the reference : translated from Italian Wikipedia. Perhaps do you can help me and add this reference ???

Best Director at 85th Academy Awards

Got your message. If you're referring to the fact that Ang Lee's entry didn't match the formatting for the rest of winners and noms table, apologies, that was me being too lazy to follow through. If you're referring to whoever put Marc Webb as Best Director for the Amazing Spider-Man, that was someone else on my IP address. Just making things clear. --Non-Member Editor, 8:32PM EST, 4/30/15

You undid my edit

Hi, @Wgolf

You recently undid my edit on the 33rd Academy Awards page. If you go on my talk page, you'll understand that I was given permission by @Diannaa. And What do you mean stop, I've just joined lol.

My new article deleted by you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishal_Mega_Mart

I just created a new article on this major Indian retail player - Vishal Mega Mart - and you deleted it even before I could contest it. Though the page was marked for speedy deletion, the company is a leading chain of retail stores in India, just like Wamart or 7-eleven in USA, has very prominent brand name with hundreds of stores throughout India. I was about to add reliable sources to support my claim, but you deleted it within a few minutes of creation of the page. Please undo the delete and help Wikipedia expand and grow. - 1pp2 14 June 2015 2:51pm IST

Can you review CS Afumati and Stadionul Comunal (Afumati), please? Rhinen

Hello

Hello Wgolf, please check me, the pages of Juan Canaveris and his descendants, all added reference not listed in books. Maybe Google books not working?... I'm thinking it may have to be removed every page of Juan Canaveris and his family. Thanks!

Mike L Whaley

Wgolf, you should check the sources before just requesting deletion, I was out of town and didn't have time to review the first deletion before it was too late. Added new sources and should be fine now. I am disappointed by your handling, and will as wikipedia for review.

Deletion of article Tenzin Dalha

Hello,

I had not read the guidelines for creating an article before I added Tenzin Dalha , I realize that I should have since I am new here. I understand the article has to be deleted if it does not adhere to the Wikipedia regulations.

Hi there, I do not think this one meets A10 criteria of speedy deletion as recently created content is within draftspace and is redirected to mainspace article. Regards Hitro talk 02:21, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@HitroMilanese: Someone must of moved the draft back as it was a draft when I put that tag up. Was not sure what to say though. The creator has been creating short articles that have gone to the draft space and recreating them. Wgolf (talk) 02:22, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@HitroMilanese: Actually not sure what to do with the deletion tag now. The draft was never improved it looks like, it could go back to the draft. Wgolf (talk) 02:28, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have requested G6 on the draft. Once it is deleted then the article from the mainspace can be moved back to the draftspace. Hitro talk 02:32, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@HitroMilanese:, thank you feel free to move it back. (The creator has quite a few articles looking at it that can go to the draftspace, if you feel they should go look!) Wgolf (talk) 02:35, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Wgolf,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Hi Wgolf, I just corrected 14 links to The Great Unknown (film) caused by the page move to The Great Unknown (1924 film). Please keep in mind that page moves often cause unintentional links to DAB pages. Thanks! Leschnei (talk) 12:14, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, I did try to move some of them, but got sidetracked by other pages. Wgolf (talk) 16:30, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I was also finding quite a few of those at the time that I was expanding the DAB. (like right now Masked Rider (disambiguation) I am trying to make sure I get all the links this time for the expand I found-based off of the what links here) Wgolf (talk) 18:37, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - your move caused a fairly minor blip in the DAB links meter. Some page moves can cause hundreds of such problems! Leschnei (talk) 12:09, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ko Nakamura and Toyoko Yoshino

Are you sure they are the same person? The Japanese wiki doesn't seem to think so: ja:中村コウ and ja:吉野トヨ子. It's possible that they're wrong but I would be extremely surprised if that were the case. —Xezbeth (talk) 12:39, 7 June 2019 (UTC) I am not sure, you can ask Lugnuts (talk · contribs) Wgolf (talk) 16:29, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

According to the sports ref source, it's the same person. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 16:48, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I do think they're different people. The Japanese wiki for Yoshino says that she was a sprinter to begin with and only took up discus after the war. —Xezbeth (talk) 18:37, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. You did not create it, but did edit it, therefore the possibility existed that you might have an opinion on it. Jay Jor (talk) 20:05, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Thomas Anglicans

@Wgolf: Hello Wgolf, I see that you a senior editor with over 100,000 edits to your credit and I solicit your guidance and advice. You had reviewed article 'Saint Thomas Anglicans' a month ago and I believe you approved it, as I see a blue tick mark in the notification that I received for the same.

I created the 'Saint Thomas Anglicans' page and took a great care to ensure that is well sourced and modeled it after the existing pages for several other Indian (ethno)religious groups. Now another user has nominated 'Saint Thomas Anglicans' for deletion, to which I strongly object. I would be stating my objections in the page 'Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Saint Thomas Anglicans', but I do not want any further step to be taken till the discussion is closed.

I request you to participate in the discussion as an impartial moderator. Thank you.

good faith edit

Hi Wgolf - you will see I have added to the disambiguation note at Henrik Gerner (Bishop), to read that the other Gerner was a shipbuilder. This seems sensible to me, as the term shipbuilder disappeared on your first edit a few days ago. No "Edit War" is intended - if you can formulate a clearer statement, fine by me. There are not enough Henrik Gerners to warrant a disambiguation page to themselves - or are there? Viking1808 (talk) 11:36, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Viking1808:It was due to the fact that there was no page for Henrik Gerner so for that reason that one was moved to that name. Wgolf (talk) 16:53, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Wgolf,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

Malvasia wine

Good morning, my sandbox was deleted in violation of G11, I would really appreciated if the person who did it had send to me a message explaining how to edit it so that it would meet the Wikipedia criteria before deleting it. It took me 2 hours to make it. I just want people to know about the story of the Malvasia Wine. I could have removed any reference to the producer (even if they do in fact own the PDO for this wine), even if I saw in other pages that sometime wine producers are named in the description, for example Vin Santo or Champagne. Please restore my sand box and explain me how to edit it so that it won't be deleted again. Thank you. Winelover10 (talk) 06:38, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
