Fixing citations so that direct quotes link to the correct article, &c. Added the fact that the subject lives in a one-bed flat as only single residents can usually be housed in these making repeated references to the subject's lack of children relevant. Have also noticed that sources refer to a shorter waiting list than the one originally posted here so have fixed that as well. |

Apsana Begum (Bengali: আফসানা বেগম[1]; born May 1990[2]) is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Poplar and Limehouse since 2019, succeeding Jim Fitzpatrick as the Labour MP for the seat.
Early life
Begum was born in Shadwell, London[3] to Bengali Muslim parents originally from the village of Ludorpur in Jagannathpur, Sylhet Division. Her father, Manir Uddin Ahmed (who died in 2012), was also a Labour Party politician, the Tower Hamlets Community Housing Board Director (2002-2006) and the 2004 Mayor of Tower Hamlets.[1] Begum completed her education at the Queen Mary University of London.[4]
Career
She worked as an admin officer for Tower Hamlets Council whilst the discredited former Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, held office.[5]
Begum was selected to contest the safe Labour seat of Poplar and Limehouse at the 2019 general elections. She was endorsed by the left-wing group Momentum[6] and nominated from an all-women shortlist.[7]
Council flat allocation allegations
Begum "faces an investigation over whether she wrongly secured a council flat".[8] Begum, who is childless, had left her husband's residence and was allocated a one-bed flat worth £330,000 soon afterwards, allegedly jumping a queue of 18,000 people on the waiting list in her local area.[9][10] A senior executive at Tower Hamlets has received two official complaints concerning Begum's housing allocation.[9] A Labour Party source has said, "It’s a disgrace these malicious attacks are being published, and she is being forced to relive these traumatic experiences."[9] A council spokeman has said that it takes allegations of housing fraud very seriously.[9]
Personal life
In 2014, Begum moved into her husband's residence, and they split up a year later.[9][10] Her ex-husband is a councillor for Tower Hamlets.[11] She does not have any children.[9]
