Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Tehran, Iran bound to Kiev, Ukraine, operated by Ukraine International Airlines. The Boeing 737-800 crashed shortly after takeoff on 8 January 2020 from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.[2][3]

Aircraft and crew

The aircraft was a Boeing 737-800 and was 3.6 years old at the time of the accident. The aircraft was delivered to the airline in mid-July 2016.[4]

Accident

The flight was operated by Ukraine International Airlines, the flag carrier and the largest airline in Ukraine, flying from Iranian capital Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport to Boryspil International Airport in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Emergency officials confirmed that the plane was carrying 167 passengers and 9 crew members. State news media initially reported that the plane was carrying 180 people. It took off from Tehran at 06:12 local time.[5][1]

Flight data from Flightradar24 shows no discrepancies in speed or altitude data than a normal flight would display. The final ADS-B data received was at 06:14, less than 3 minutes after departure.[6]

A video circulated on social media purportedly shows the moment of the crash. The video revealed that the plane was on fire when it began to dive with some of its parts breaking up in mid-air.[7] It then crashed near Parand and exploded. ISNA did not confirm the validity of the video but it did state that the plane was burning prior to the crash.[8][9]

Iran's state television said all those on board the airliner were killed after crashing at 06:22.[10][11]

Emergency response

Shortly after the crash of the aircraft, emergency responders arrived with 22 ambulances, four bus ambulances and a helicopter but heavy fires prevented a rescue attempt.[12]

Investigation

Spokesman from Iranian Civil Aviation Reza Jafarzadeh stated that a team of investigators had been sent to the crash site.[9] According to Fars News Agency, the head of the commission for accidents in the Iran Civil Aviation Organization said that they have received no emergency message from the aircraft before the crash.[13]

Aftermath

Reactions

The disaster occurred amid a heightened political crisis between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf, happening just hours after the Iranian military launched dozens of rockets at U.S military airbases in Iraq in response to the assassination of Qasem Soleimani by the US on 3 January. In the early hours after the incident, Iranian Twitter profiles posted unsubstantiated claims of the crash having been caused by an anti-aircraft missile erroneously launched by the Iranian military. Al-Hadath, a Jordanian-based newspaper, reported that anti-aircraft missiles in the capital shot down the aircraft.[14] ISNA and other Iranian state news agency however reported that the plane was facing technical difficulties.[15]

Boeing released a statement on social media that the company was "aware of the media reports out of Iran and [is] gathering more information."[16]

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims.[16]
