After We Collided is a 2020 American romantic drama film directed by Roger Kumble and written by Anna Todd and Mario Celaya. It is based on the 2014 new adult fiction novel of the same name by Todd, and is the sequel to After (2019). The film stars Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Tessa Young and Hardin Scott, respectively, with Dylan Sprouse, Shane Paul McGhie, Candice King, Khadijha Red Thunder, Inanna Sarkis, Samuel Larsen, and Selma Blair in supporting roles.

After We Collided was released in select European countries on September 2, 2020, before being released simultaneously in theaters and video-on-demand in the United States on October 23, 2020, by Open Road Films. Like its predecessor, the film was panned by critics, but was a box office success, becoming the highest-grossing drama of 2020.[4] Two sequels are in development.

Plot

The story begins where the last movie left off revealing the reunion between Tessa Young and Hardin Scott at the lake was only Hardin's dream.

One month after his breakup with Tessa, Hardin wakes up in his car from his dream looking dishevel and broken. His cell phone shows that Tessa has ignored his many text messages to her and is no longer in contact with him. Hardin meets an unknown homeless man whom he rebuffs when he attempts to talk to him. Meanwhile, Tessa, on her first day as an intern at Vance Publishing, shares an awkward encounter with her new coworker Trevor Matthews. Kimberly takes her to her office where she ends up working overnight. The next morning, Christian Vance, impressed with Tessa's work, takes her to a Seattle work conference with Kimberly and Trevor.

Hardin gets a new tattoo to numb his emotional pain. After returning home, he receives constant text messages from Steph inviting him to the frat house for a party. Still heartbroken from his breakup with Tessa which he still holds a grudge against Molly for causing, Hardin embarrasses Molly in front of everyone at the party by openly rejecting Molly's advances when she tries to seduce him to forget about Tessa. Unamused Hardin decides to leave the frat house party after Molly ridicules him for still being hung up on Tessa who doesn't even want him.

Tessa goes to a nightclub with Trevor, Kimberly and Vance for business in order to convince an investor into investing into Vance Publishing's expansion. After having too many alcohol drinks, Tessa starts to hallucinate about Hardin while dancing with a stranger. In a drunken stupor, she calls Hardin, who becomes concern for her when he finds out she is drunk and not alone. Concern for Tessa's safety Hardin arrives at Seattle to track down Tessa. While chatting, Tessa accidently spills wine on Trevor's clothes and insist on helping him clean them. Hardin arrives and finds Trevor in Tessa's hotel room in his underwear hiding in the bathroom and becomes enraged. Trevor leaves in a hurry but Hardin slams the door on his face while trying to explain a misunderstanding to Hardin. Tessa and Hardin argue about her life no longer being his business anymore before the two have sex after Tessa gives Hardin an ultimatum while drunk. The next morning, Tessa wakes up confused about the night before and is rushed by Kimberly on the phone to meet at the hotel lobby to leave. Hardin wakes up thinking they have reconciled only for Tessa to argue with him about the previous night, which leads to her telling him that it was a mistake because she was drunk and that she kissed a stranger at the club. Angry, Hardin retaliates by lying that he slept with Molly while she was kissing a stranger.

Hardin seeks out Landon for his advice but is mocked for what he had done to Tessa previously. Hardin leaves but not before telling Landon that he truly does love Tessa. Landon texts Tessa that he spoke with Hardin and reveals that Hardin did not sleep with Molly. For Tessa's Birthday Trevor gifts Tessa a cost analysis and negotiated terms for a used car with company paid insurance. Tessa is ecstatic and kisses him to show her appreciation. Finding out from Landon that Hardin had left for London, England Tessa returns to the apartment where she and Hardin previously shared to retrieve the rest of her belongings and sees a Kindle which Hardin was to gift to her on her Birthday. Both are surprised to find each other at the apartment when Hardin did not go to London but his mom Trish had come to join him instead. Trish is overjoy to meet Tessa after hearing about her through Hardin. The pair are forced to pretend they are still together as Hardin had not informed his mother about their breakup. Trish's persuasion convinces Tessa to stay overnight where a happy Hardin and her continues to pretend being together longer. The next day, Tessa leaves to meet her mother Carol and she runs into her ex-boyfriend, Noah when she arrives at her mother's house. through Noah she learns that her estranged father came looking for her but Carol had sent him away. When Carol calls Noah's phone to apologize for being stuck at work, Tessa and Carol end up arguing about her dad and keeping secrets which leads to Carol bringing up her disapproval of Hardin again. Angered, Tessa leaves and returns to Hardin who waits for her outside their apartment building to comfort her.

Hardin has a nightmare about the night his mother was assaulted, Tessa calms him down. The next day Trish and Tessa talks about Hardin's nightmares and reveals that his nightmares stopped when he started dating Tessa. Hardin gifts to Tessa another Birthday gift where she gets to choose how they spend an entire day as she wishes. Their intimate day together is interrupted by Kimberly asking if the pair could babysit Vance's son, Smith. After everyone leaves, alone at the office Hardin gifts Tessa an early Christmas gift, a charm bracelet and ask for forgiveness. The pair confess their love for each other while having sex in Tessa's office. On Christmas Day, Hardin, Tessa and Trish is invited to Ken and Karen's house. Jealous over Ken's new family, Hardin gets drunk and punches Ken after an argument about his mother's assault. Trish berates Hardin about his grudges and leaves for the airport. Arriving home after Ken's party, Tessa leaves for a walk, alone at the apartment Hardin gets into a drunken rage before passing out. Tessa confides the incident to Trevor, who warns her that her relationship with Hardin will not end well since he is aware because his sister is an addict.

The two are spending a quiet evening together on the couch when Hardin gets a text from Steph inviting him to the frat house New Year's Eve party. Tessa insist that they go since she is not afraid what previously happened between her and Hardin's friends. While getting ready for the party, Vance calls Tessa to offer a job position in Seattle. At the party Hardin seeks out Jamie, whom he had previously bet on, to speak to her alone and ask for her forgiveness. Tessa gets drunk while playing beer pong with Zed, Steph and Tristen. After being provoked by Molly, Tessa and Molly get into a physical fight, which Hardin intervenes. He carries Tessa to his old frat room, where they have sex. After having sex Hardin accidently reads a text on Tessa's phone from Trevor about Tessa moving to Seattle with the publishing company and spending time together. Angry, Hardin leaves the room and runs into Jamie, asking her to keep their conversation between them a secret. Tessa misinterprets this as Hardin cheating on her and impulsively kisses a stranger in front of him, despite his attempts to explain. The two fight and Hardin runs off back to the party leaving Tessa behind outside.

The next day Tessa becomes worried when she sees that Hardin did not come home or answered any of her many text messages to him. Hardin had spent the entire night at the frat house waking up outside the frat house. While getting his phone recharged and getting a car ride from Jaime he calls Tessa after seeing the many messages she left for him. Tessa gets distracted while driving and try to pick up Hardin's phone call, resulting in a car accident. Hardin witnesses the accident but is too late while chasing after the ambulance transporting Tessa. Worried sick about Tessa, Hardin is chastised by Landon who blames him for Tessa's accident. Hardin calls Tessa's phone, but Trevor answers the phone cursing him out and tells him to stay away from Tessa because she will never find happiness with him. After hearing Trevor's harsh words Hardin leaves for London. Tessa arrives home and finds a hand written letter from Hardin explaining who Jamie is and why they need to end their relationship. Back in London, Trish convinces Hardin to stop dwelling on the past and go to Vance's farewell party to fight for him and Tessa.

Vance provides a toast for his colleagues and proposes to Kimberly, which she accepts. Trevor reveals to Tessa that he told Hardin to stay away from her and that he has something he wants to ask her before going to the bathroom. While standing alone upstairs Hardin appears at the party looking at Tessa. Upset with his 9 days disappearance, Tessa leaves the party. Hardin follows her outside, thinking he had lost her when he sees a car drive away he is surprised when she calls him from behind. The two leave the party together after she forgives him again. Hardin gets a new tattoo, promising to himself and Tessa that he will never leave her. As they are leaving, the unknown homeless man whom Hardin met in the beginning reveals himself to be Tessa's father. In a post-credits scene, Trevor practices in the mirror to ask Tessa out for a date.

Production

In May 2019, it was confirmed that a sequel to the film After was planned with Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin reprising their roles as Tessa Young and Hardin Scott respectively.[5]

On August 4, it was announced that Roger Kumble would direct the sequel.[6] On August 5, it was announced that Dylan Sprouse was cast as Trevor, Tessa's coworker.[7] On August 15, Charlie Weber, Rob Estes, Louise Lombard, Candice King, Karimah Westbrook and Max Ragone were announced to play Christian Vance, Ken Scott, Trish, Kim, Karen, and Smith, respectively.[8] Estes and Westbrook replaced Peter Gallagher and Jennifer Beals as Ken and Karen Scott respectively.

Principal photography began in August 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia.[9][10]

Release

After We Collided was theatrically released in Italy, Ireland, Portugal and the United Kingdom on September 2, 2020.[11] On September 3, 2020, the film was released in Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, and Ukraine.[12] It was then released in Sweden on September 9,[13] in Australia, Denmark, the Middle East and New Zealand on September 10, and in Canada, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Romania on September 11.[14] It was released simultaneously to theaters and on-demand in the United States on October 23, 2020, by Open Road Films.[15][16]

Reception

Box office and VOD

The film debuted to $10 million from 16 countries, with Italy ($2.6 million) being the largest market.[17] In its second weekend, the film grossed $4.2 million from 21 countries, for a 10-day running total of $21 million.[18] In Sweden, the film grossed $295,567 from 122 theaters during the first five days of its theatrical release, beginning on September 9.[19] Following the strong sophomore numbers, it was announced the film would have an increase in the theater totals in several countries, including the United Kingdom where its gross jumped 18% in the second weekend and was being distributed by Shear Entertainment would increase from 59 theaters to 360.[20] In its third weekend the film made $4.1 million from 31 countries.[21] In its fourth weekend, the film earned $3.25 million from 32 countries. In Spain the film earned (€3.2 million) $3.7 million.[22]

In After We Collided's domestic debut, it grossed $422,899 from 460 theaters.[23] Over that same period, it was the number one most rented film on Google Play and Apple TV, and second at FandangoNow.[1] The following weekend it remained first at Google and Apple, while finishing third at both Fandango and Spectrum.[24]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 14% based on 14 reviews, with an average rating of 3.90/10.[25] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 14 out of 100, based on four critics, indicating "overwhelming dislike."[26]

Sequels

In September 2020 it was announced that two sequels, After We Fell and After Ever Happy, were greenlit to go into back-to-back production, with Castille Landon directing both films.[27]
