"Diaper lover" (or DL for short) is the popular term for a person who feels a strong desire to wear or use diapers without physiological necessity. This paraphilia is differentiated from infantilism in that those of the latter category are also focused with returning to babyhood in ways other than by wearing diapers. There is no proof that these desires are related to pedophilia or infantophilia.

The Diaper lover community is often associated with the Adult Baby (or AB for short) community. One who engages in infantilistic play is known as an adult baby (AB) or teen baby (TB), depending on age. About one in three adult babies is also a diaper lover (DL)[1], so they are collectively known as AB/DLs[2]. The majority of infantilists are heterosexual males[3].

Infantilism and diaper fetishes differ in self-image and the focus of attention. However, they can coexist in individuals and have some similarities in practice. Neither include a sexual preference for children.

Contrast from Pedophilia

"Confusing diaper fetishism and infantilism with pedophilia is a common misunderstanding[4]. Pedophilia is a sexual preference for pre-pubescent children[5][6]. In contrast, infantilists have a desire to be infants themselves, and those with a diaper fetish have a sexual interest in diapers. Generally, they have ordinary heterosexual or homosexual sexual experiences otherwise. Inside the AB/DL communities, a sharp distinction is observed. Many of these communities will expel child molesters. [7] Two prominent examples of such communities are DPF.com, one of the oldest AB/DL organizations, and Aby.com one of the first online networks.

Aspects of the Fetish

Motives

In many cases, the desire for these acts is of a sexual nature, in which case it is classed as a sexual fetish; but in other cases it is non-sexual, where the wearer might derive a sense of comfort and safety from wearing diapers, and may not even use them. It is also very possible that someone with this fetish may or may not want to go to a full intent of use of the diapers. Some might simply want to look at images of other people taking part in the fetish, or drawings made by artists depicting this fetish.

In Society

It can be common for a diaper lover to feel ashamed and isolated in their desires and most try to hide this desire from others. Many wish for partners to participate in the fetish with, but diaper lovers are rare in the general population. Until the rise of online services and the Internet, few persons interested in the subject had contact with any others. The CompuServe Adult Human Sexuality Forum established an "Adult Babies" section in 1987, which may have been the first online community based on sharing interests similar to this. Today, there are many websites dedicated to various facets of the fetish.

Diaper usage

A central practice to AB/DL is wearing a diaper. Many AB/DLs like to "wet" or urinate diapers, and a smaller number[8] like to "mess" or defecate in them. Others do not because they find such practices disgusting, do not enjoy it, do not want to go through the cleanup afterward, or wouldn't be able to without being obvious. Some AB/DLs have difficulty wetting their diapers when they want to, as the result of overtrained bladders or paruresis.

A common compromise between wanting to wear diapers and needing to go about daily life is to wear diapers under normal clothing. When diaper lovers do so, it is in their everyday mindset, as opposed to an infantile one. A few adult babies wear diapers all the time, and may seek to develop enuresis or urinary incontinence. The level of enjoyment in wearing diapers all the time is mixed, and it may have lasting effects; some adult babies have found that the enjoyment diminishes rapidly when the need to wear diapers is always present.[9] Other AB/DLs enjoy wearing diapers intermittently more than they would enjoy wearing them all the time.

A difficult choice that AB/DLs must make involves who to tell about their interests. This offers the possibility of being accepted for who they are, and not having to hide. However, it also includes the risk of disgrace at home, school, and work.
