Anupama is an Indian drama television series that premiered on 13 July 2020 on Star Plus.[2] Produced by Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi under Director's Kut Productions, it stars Rupali Ganguly in the titular role.[3] It is based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Sreemoyee.[4]

Plot

Anupamaa, a devoted housewife, mother and daughter-in-law loves her family and fulfills all their needs, ignoring her own. Bereft of the same love and respect in her house from her own family members, she realises the bitter truth and sets out to live her life on her own terms.

Anupamaa is often humiliated for being a simple housewife with an incomplete degree. Her husband Vanraj secretly has been having an affair with his colleague Kavya for the past eight years, the latter feeling insecure due to Anupamaa. Anupamaa wins the funfair at Paakhi's school and receives a job offer as a cooking teacher. Vanraj and Leela are initially against the idea but Kavya convinces Vanraj to let Anupamaa work. However, she is soon fired owing to her unpunctuality caused by Vanraj. Rakhi, Kinjal's mother, becomes skeptical about Paritosh and Kinjal's marriage after meeting Anupamaa but eventually agrees to the marriage with the intention to break the marriage somehow. Despite Devika and Anirudh trying to warn Anupamaa about Kavya and Vanraj's relationship, she refuses to believe them and expresses her faith in Vanraj.

As Paritosh and Kinjal get engaged, Nandini learns about Vanraj and Kavya's affair and confronts the latter. Vanraj and Kavya book their marriage on the same day of his and Anupamaa's marriage anniversary. However, Vanraj finds himself unable to reach Kavya and is instead remarried to Anupamaa while Kavya is left fuming. After seeing Vanraj and Kavya confessing their love and getting intimate, Anupamaa is left shattered and faints. Upon recovering from the shock, she breaks her relationship with Vanraj but hides the truth from the family. Supported by Devika, Anupamaa creates a virtual barrier between herself and Vanraj.

Kavya and Vanraj plan a honeymoon at a resort that coincidentally, is owned by Rakhi's friend. Taking advantage of the situation, Rakhi calls the Shahs there for the weekend where she exposes the affair in front of the whole family and calls off Paritosh and Kinjal's wedding. Vanraj blames Anupamaa for his affair but his family doesn't forgive him. Enraged Vanraj leaves the house and moves in with Kavya.

Paritosh and Kinjal elope and marry in court. While Anupamaa welcomes them, Rakhi vows to destroy their family, repeatedly failing in her attempts to break off their marriage. With Devika's help, Anupamaa regains her job as a cooking teacher while Vanraj finds his job at stake when a new CEO comes to his office. The Shah family decides to host a grand wedding for Kinjal and Paritosh. On Leela's insistence, Vanraj returns to temporarily stay with the Shahs to fulfil his duties as a father. Rakhi manipulates Kavya into attending the marriage, where she creates a scene and is slapped by Anupamaa. Furious Vanraj leaves with Kavya.

Vanraj and Kavya get into a heated argument during which an infuriated Vanraj breaks all ties with Kavya before meeting with a deadly accident. Vanraj recovers and is brought back home to the Shah house. Anupamaa takes care of Vanraj's health while latter's ignorance irks Kavya. To stay close to him, she moves to his neighborhood, much to Leela's infuriation. While staying at Shah house, Vanraj starts to develop a soft corner for Anupamaa. He tries to articulate his feelings but fails in his attempt. Anupamaa then rebukes Vanraj for getting his feelings back for him and telling her to come back to him. On the other side, Kavya decides to give Anirudh another chance in attempt to gain Vanraj back. Soon, Vanraj decides to stay with Kavya while Anupamaa decides to divorce Vanraj. Vanraj is angered by the divorce notice sent by Anupamaa's lawyer and Pakhi decides to move in with Vanraj and Kavya. Leela objects Anupamaa for divorcing her husband but Anupamaa doesn't change her decision.

Eventually, Vanraj loses his job, leaving the Shah family shattered. Unknowingly, Kinjal goes for an job interview and soon realises that she got a job as the head of the same project where Vanraj was supposed to lead. Leela rebukes Anupamaa and Kinjal for replacing Vanraj's position. Vanraj declares that Anupamaa is mentally disabled which angers Samar. Samar's anger leads to breaking Kavya's table stand and Kavya puts a false FIR on Samar. Soon Anupamaa's anger forces Kavya to take back the complaint.

Next day, while Anupamaa was teaching in the new classroom while using gas, the whole class catches fire. She is praised by the whole school and the Shahs for saving all the children, but her happiness doesn't last long as she was forced to write an apology to the school for the breakout. She receives an ultimatum that if she refuses, Pakhi will be removed from the school. Anupamaa then decides not to sign the apology letter for the sake of the school children and making the school administration realise their mistake. Anupamaa is successful in proving herself innocent for which she receives an award.

As Pakhi lives with Vanraj and Kavya, complications arise. Pakhi holds Kavya responsible for her parents divorce, while the latter blames Pakhi for no privacy and wasting her father's money. Vanraj's birthday comes and all three: Leela, Paakhi and Kaavya are excited. Leela and Pakhi expect Vanraj to celebrate his birthday with the family, as always, while Kavya insists that they should visit a Resort. Hurt by Kavya's words and her plans with Vanraj, Paakhi goes back to Anupamaa's house, where Anupamaa comforts her. Later, during Vanraj's birthday celebration, Kavya and Pakhi quarrel. Anupamaa and Vanraj reprimand Paakhi for her rough behavior, which traumatizes Paakhi to an extent that she leaves the house. Later, Anupamaa and Vanraj bring her back and they reconcile all differences with her.

Later, Anupamaa and Vanraj decide to accompany Leela to her mother's place. They spend convivial time with each other during the onward journey. Vanraj and Anupamaa explore new dimensions of their relationships, friendship. Elsewhere, Nandini expresses her love for Samar and they spend some romantic time together. When Anupamaa and Vanraj return, they catch Samar and Nandini together and raise allegations on their relationship. Vanraj refuses to accept their relationship and warns them both. But Samar, who is very intent on marrying Nandini, brings her home, infuriating Vanraj. When Samar spoils the Mahashivratri function, Vanraj vents his frustration on him. He declares that he has often struggled in his life, and he deserves some respect and care, in return from the family. Vanraj demands his legal rights over the house, to become its sole owner. Anupamaa, who wanted to maintain the peace of the house, hands over the ownership to Vanraj.

Pakhi, who had gone for a picnic with her friends, returns and finds out that Kavya is staying with the Shahs. An infuriated Pakhi demands Kavya be immediately ousted from the house. As a result, Kavya stays with Nandhini. During Holi celebrations, Kavya vows to apply the color to Vanraj before Anupama. Rakhi is invited. She tries to intoxicate Kavya but Anupama becomes intoxicated instead and applies colors to Vanraj after becoming unmanageable. Later, she articulates her deep-seated thoughts about the family and how she was treated through these 25 years. She also expresses her love for Vanraj, which vanished after she was betrayed.

Vanraj and Anupamaa receive a final notice from the court declaring that their divorce will be legalised after three days. They thus decide to end this relationship on a positive note.

Production

Development

In February 2020, Rajan Shahi, the producer of Aai Kuthe Kay Karte announced his plan to produce its Hindi remake Anupamaa stating, "This interesting concept around a mother’s journey has been so inspirational that Star wants to bring it in Hindi too."[6]

Talking about the show on being inspired from Sreemoyee, Shahi said, "When I heard about the show and its adaptation I made it clear that I will only hear the gist of the show but I would like it to give a complete turnaround to it. Sreemoyee is a brilliant show but adaptations have to be made according to the audience it's made for. I was confident about the subject and the spin was given to the entire show. Anupamaa is not a gimmicky show, it's a simple one with simple characters."[7]

In early August 2020, the cast of the series recorded a special song for the Raksha Bandhan sequence in their own voices.[8]

Filming

Set in Gujarat, the series is mainly shot at Film City in Mumbai.[9][10] Some initial sequences were shot at Ahmedabad in early March 2020.[11]

On 13 February 2021, the filming was halted for a day for sanitation when Paras Kalnawat playing Samar tested positive for Covid-19 virus.[12] The sequences of Kalnawat with Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini was cancelled until his recovery and return.[13]

On 2 April 2021, leads Rupali Ganguli and Sudhanshu Pandey and Aashish Mehrotra who potray the role of Anupama, Vanraj and Paritosh respectively and producer Rajan Shahi tested positive for COVID-19 while picnic and divorce sequences were postponed and the story focussed more on Rakhi, Kavya and Leela's character.[14][15]

Premiere and broadcast

Earlier scheduled to premiere on 16 March 2020, the series was postponed amid the COVID-19 outbreak in India when the filming of Indian television and films were stalled indefinitely from 19 March 2020 onward.[16] After more than three months, the filming resumed and the series premiered on 13 July 2020.[17][18]

Casting

Rupali Ganguly was cast as the main lead Anupamaa, returning to television after seven years.[19] Sudhanshu Pandey was cast as Anupamaa's husband, Vanraj.[20] Besides, Muskan Bamne, Paras Kalnawat, Aashish Mehrotra, Alpana Buch, Sarita Joshi, Madhavi Gagote, Ekta Saraiya, Paresh Bhatt, Stuti Zakarde, Mehul Nisar, Arvind Vaidya and Bhakti Chauhan were cast.[21][22][23][24][25][26][27] However, days before the filming resumed after Covid-19 outbreak in late June, Additi Gupta was confirmed infected with the virus and thus, she was replaced by Madalsa Sharma and the sequences earlier shot by Gupta were reshot by Sharma.[28][29] Days after premiere in July 2020, Shekhar Shukla was roped in to play Jignesh, and soon after, Nidhi Shah, Farrukh Saeed, Tasneem Sheikh, Anagha Bhosale and Rushad Rana entered the show.[30][31][32][33][34][35]

Reception

Critics

India Today stated, "Rupali Ganguly fits the character perfectly and aces the role of a Gujarati homemaker. The show strikes a chord with the homemakers as they can identify with the protagonist. Anupamaa has the right amount of emotions, drama, and spice. The show has the right mix of family values and a modern outlook. The show is a heartwarming tale."[36]

ThePrint appreciated the series along with few other Hindi GECs based on the story of a mother mentioning it delivering moral lessons and stating the character Anupamaa as paragon of virtue and farcical.[37]
