The fourth and final season of the Attack on Titan anime television series, subtitled Attack on Titan: The Final Season, is produced by MAPPA, chief directed by Jun Shishido, and directed by Yūichirō Hayashi, replacing Tetsurō Araki and Masashi Koizuka respectively. Scriptwriter Hiroshi Seko took over the series composition from Yasuko Kobayashi, and Tomohiro Kishi replaced Kyōji Asano as character designer due to the series switching production studios.[1] The season covers the "Marley" (chapters 91–106) and "War for Paradis" (chapters 107–139) arcs from the original manga by Hajime Isayama.

The season follows Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, young Eldian Warrior candidates seeking to inherit Reiner's Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. Marley plans to invade Paradis to strengthen their weakening military and recover the Founding Titan. With the Survey Corps on the Marley shoreline, Gabi, Falco, Reiner, and other Titans go to war with the Paradis soldiers as Eren Jaeger reveals his new plan of attack on the Marleyan invaders: annihilation. As both sides take a heavy death toll, both the Marleyan Warriors and the Survey Corps must question the best approach to claiming victory over the other side. Eren's comrades begin to realize that he has begun to walk down a questionable path, while Gabi and Falco must combat their internal tensions over the supposed "devils" of Paradis.

The season premiered on NHK General TV on December 7, 2020 at 12:10 a.m. JST.[2] In the United States, Adult Swim's Toonami programming block began airing Funimation's English dub on January 10, 2021 at 12:30 a.m. EST/PST.[3] The first 16 episodes aired until March 29, 2021. A second part will begin airing on January 9, 2021.[4][5]

The score is directed by Masafumi Mima and composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto.[1] The opening theme for the first 16 episodes is "My War" (僕の戦争, Boku no Sensō) performed by Shinsei Kamattechan, and the ending theme is "Shock" (衝撃, Shōgeki) performed by Yūko Andō.[6]

The soundtrack was composed by Kohta Yamamoto (on tracks 1–20), and Hiroyuki Sawano (on tracks 21–23), and was released on June 23, 2021[11] by Pony Canyon.[12] It was released digitally on several sites including Spotify.[13] It contains 23 tracks, with two vocal tracks featuring performances by cumi and Hannah Grace.[14][15]

  2. ^ This episode was originally set to air on Adult Swim on March 7, 2021, however the February 2021 North American ice storm that hit Texas which resulted in a shutdown of its power grid caused production delays for Funimation's English dub. Adult Swim showed a rerun of the prior week's episode in its place.[9]
  3. ^ While airing its premiere on March 15, 2021, this episode was abruptly stopped due to a special report about an earthquake that occurred in the Wakayama Prefecture. It aired again in its complete format on March 22, 2021 on NHK General TV alongside episode 74.[10]
